One set of my grandparents married in 1934 aged 31 and 36. The other set married in 1930 aged nearly 36 and 27.
I read a book a few years ago- can’t remember the name - that indicated that marriage ages were later in the 20s and 30s than in subsequent decades.

In previous censuses we could search by 'occupation' - is that possible on the 1926 census?

Just refresh Irish Genealogy when you get the error message. Usually reloads okay.

Also interesting how old some parents were when having new born children. My Grandad was 55 and grandmother 41 when my Dad was born and they even had a younger daughter afterwards (obviously post 1926) who had some mental issues and was "put in" to the Killarney mental asylum where she spent the rest of her life. Apparently the main reason was the parish priest was worried about her ability to control her own chastity. It was a horrid waste of that poor woman's life.

Is anyone having trouble trying to load specific townlands? I've no problem loading most but when I click on Distillery Road Townland in Wexford Town it doesn't load.

I have a great aunt that died in grangegorman in the 50s. The release of the 1926 cencus revealed that she was in grangegorman in 1926 so this lines up with family story that she spent 30 years in grangegorman ( all that's shown is her initials) . Her 3year old daughter is living with her grandparents, her husband is a boarder in another household but there is no sign of their 1 year old daughter. This 1 year old little girl died a year later in 1927 and the death was registered by her uncle. This baby was unknown in the family until I spotted her death and the release of the 1925 births confirmed this couple were her parents. I had thought that the death of this baby may have triggered mental health issues for my aunt but it appears she was unwell before the baby died. Sadly I think the eldest girl grew up and died not knowing that she ever had a sister - she remained living with her grandparents and had very little contact with her parents.

I cant find where the baby was in 1926. Why wasn't she living with her grandparents also? She wasnt with any other family either. So 1926 cencus has led to more questions than answers for me. I'll keep digging.

Ita such a sad story and I had hoped to find them all living together as a happy family in 1926 but sadly that didn't happen.

Some townlands are misspelled on the actual census form and this incorrect spelling is copied onto the database but I have also seen some townlands spelled correctly on the census form but misspelled on the data base. Any of those scenario's will give a no record found return. Best try searching other than using townlands if you are getting a no records found return.

Two GG aunts missing from the family return and looks like they’re missing from the 26 census. Tried hospitals, both sets of their grandparents, two older married brothers but can’t locate them. One married in Sep 26 and the other in Jan 27 and they were living at the same family address as 1911. Found the two husbands at their respective family addresses ok. Any suggestions where else to try?

Was there a local nursery or mother and baby home nearby? I looked at Kilrush nursery and was surprised at the number of young children there despite 'both parents alive'

Thats a good idea. I will take a look tonight. Thank you

Could they possibly have been working as live in maids/nannies etc?

Try searching their names not filtered by location. Just filter it by age. You may find them like this.

I thought my great aunt must have been in the US when she was missing from the family home. I found her about 150 metres up the road as a servant in a neighbour's house.

Good for her getting out shortly afterwards, even if she was called back within a few years to care for her mother (who hung on until 1952) and subsequently to look after her brothers. She outlived them all.

There was an active conspiracy to stop her marrying, though she was not short of offers either side of the Atlantic.

I remember her well from my childhood. She was 5 foot 11 on her passenger manifest, towering over most of the men.

Could they have completed their forms in Irish?

A lot of interesting women have done so:

    Countess Markievicz

    Dr Kathleen Lynn

Interesting to have it up and be able to search family, but.

No 'age' box when searching. No ability to search by street address, which means I can't find who else was in the house my father's tenement was in. No ability to search by occupation. No ability to search by religion. Those two are going to make drilling down into the disputable factors around the drop in protestant population over the 15 years difficult for local historians. Is there a deliberate attempt to prevent amateur historians doing work the professionals wanted to keep for themselves?

I can't see where to report omissions, notably the aunt who is clearly there on the household return form but does not show up on a search.

Very disappointing when the original site for 1910 and 1911 was so brilliant.

It's been mentioned above that in time more function will be introduced to the search but I agree that the old site was great with many work-arounds to find where people were hiding.

    Let's try and be positive.

We can pick it apart but other countries get this stuff pay per view on a subscription site.

The Irish Times states that Eamon de Valéra completed his form in Irish but when I click on his name only the Beardmore family comes up. Dev is listed on Pg B5 as living in a home with 8 rooms, but I can't see the actual form he completed. That would have been interesting to see his handwriting.

Time to change the Thread title?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,073 ✭✭✭✭Terry

I saw a few here in Leixlip who completed their forms in Irish.

It's hard to read the PDFs. They all seem to have been written by the same person. The handwriting is difficult to read.

I just found an uncle, who I knew was the eldest. He was living with his grandfather as opposed to his siblings, who were in the family home.

    I've had the same problem.

An uncle of mine had his surname slightly misspelled. His name doesn't show up on any search of the town. I only found him after looking through the different DEDs in the town.

I agree with you on the address search, but there's nothing we can do about it now.
My grandfather was born in 1886. Doc Brown couldn't tell him, or the government of the free state, to have a column for the exact address. This is probably why I can't find my grandparents on my father's side. Very common names.

I have followed my Great Grandfather's filling out of the census's 1901, 1911 and 1926.

In 1901 he filled it out in English, in 1911 he filled it out the in Irish and in 1926 he filled out both sides Irish and English.
