    The latest press conference gems:

“The main thing is how we were able to compete against Paris Saint-Germain after only having two days off, with them being rested for a week, how we have been able to compete against the other quarter-finalists here at home.

“Then you see that with doing the right things in the summer and not being as unlucky as we were this season. Then we can even have a better season.

“And the reality is that we went out in the FA Cup and the Champions League against in my opinion the two best teams in open play at the moment with two incredible managers [Manchester City and PSG] so that is also the reality that we have been unlucky with the draws.”

Is he delusional or taking the piss out of us all?

it’s not working. We need to go another direction next season. But he still won us a league. So while it’s fair and probably (imo) correct to want change next season, we don’t need to be pricks about the guy.

Slot is clearly at the end of the road, not replacing him in the summer would be negligent and set us back further as he will likely have to be replaced during next season, so effectively next season becomes a write off and have even less choice of available managers.

If we accept that this was a transitional season, then getting knocked out in the QF of CL and FA cup by PSG and Man City, and finishing in top 5 could be argued as acceptable, but, the reality is zero progress has been made, in fact we have regressed so far, that no matter who is in charge next season its already looking like another transitional season, except that we will basically be starting from scratch as there are zero positives to take from this season; still big question marks about the new signings, a very unbalanced squad, meaning more turn over this summer, morale and confidence low, playing a terrible brand of football. An awful lot of issues for whoever is in charge next season.

I think it would be worth giving Alonso a chance, he might get the best out of Writz (although yet to be convinced if Wirtz is a good fit for us or the league), and organise the team better to at least play a coherent style of football, at the moment we don't seem to have any real plan of how to play, just, slow sideways passing that's killing any opportunity. A big rebuild on the way and hard to see us challenge for the major honours next season whoever is it charge, but, I'd settle for us to get back playing decent football with a decent shape and plan and a more balanced squad and team.

I agree that any kind of personal abuse towards him is wrong, and there is some pathetic stuff out there on social media. I think it's fair to post his comments though? He has been saying some strange stuff for a while now and he really doesn't help himself in terms of the relationship with the fans.

I really don't see what's so strange about it. He's obviously going to put a positive slant on everything, that's in his own interest.

What do people expect him to say?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 471 ✭✭Libertine07

Like many of his comments recently, there's a grain of truth in what he says but it really doesn't come across well.

I think there's a middle ground between being defeatist and making excuses. In reality we lost 4-0 over two legs (and it could have been much worse) and we couldn't lay a glove on them. Yes there was a period of about 25 minutes where we put some pressure on, but overall we were absolutely schooled.

You can say something like "The better team won. We can take some positives from our play in the second half but we know we need to do more to be able to compete, and we know what we need to work on."

Saying the future looks bright off the back of our recent defeats is just nonsense. Blaming an unlucky draw is nonsense, you expect to meet a quality side in a CL quarter final, and compared to when we faced PSG last year we have regressed massively.

It just gives the overall impression that he thinks our issues this season are down to bad luck. Valid criticism is batted away with excuses. It's concerning to hear that as a fan of the club, because if he's saying this stuff in public God knows what he's saying to the players.

I think he's under tremendous pressure and considering that I think he handles himself reasonably well. We've all seen managers start to fray at the edges and blame players during bad runs, he's avoided that.

We did get unlucky with the draws we got in each competition. If we'd got Southampton and Sporting for instance and made the semis of both competitions, things would be much more positive. Instead we got the most difficult draws possible.

That's not to overlook the performance level in both ties which was way below par. If I'm FSG, then I'd have serious concerns about Slots ability to compete at the top level. I do.

A lot now depends on these next 6 games. If we continue to perform poorly, then I think we'll see a change in the summer. If they perform well and finish the season strongly, he'll probably get another shot at it.

I think Slot's delivery is very blunt, and without realising it, whatever message he is trying to delivery seems to get lost in translation, there's possibly a disconnect between what he thinks he is saying and how it comes across, English isn't his first language, so that might explain some of the strange quotes this season. I think he probably had a few daft quotes too last season, but, these were brushed over as things were going well, but, now that we've been poor for so long these quotes are getting highlighted and scrutinised more. Some of the stuff he has said publicly has alienated a lot of players within the squad, players that he later has to rely on, so not exactly the way to about getting the best out of players.

This is it in a nutshell, if you're top of the league you can say whatever you want. When you're struggling, everything gets dissected and reinterpreted to suit certain narratives.

We were spoiled by Klopp for so long. Anyone who followed was going to pale in comparison.

I know I keep going on about Van Bronkhurst, but I really think we need a war time consigliere. Someone to help Slot with how he should go about things, someone who knows Liverpool and help Slot with the nuances of what to say. Maybe Richard Hughes does that but I wasn't impressed with the appointment of Van Bronkhurst in the first place. I'd try and get Heitenga back.

Surely someone has the balls to say to Slot to stop going on about PSG or Low blocks and phrase things a little differently. It would by him some time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,229 ✭✭✭riddles

The consensus in the media is that Slot says a lot of the right things about what is going wrong. However, the delta between that and his ability to correct things seems to grow which pushes him him further into the spoofer territory.

Nah, yes on the curly wig but clowns in Liverpool need a shellsuit and a good rigid elbow while screaming "calm down, calm down" to the rest of us 😉
Slot's in the middle, calming down the pre-derby jitters.

I also think Slot for the most part has handled the media reasonably well at least from the club perspective imo. He’s dealing with a sh*t sandwich and everyone criticising everything about him, and for the most part he is a) not blaming the players, b) not blaming the management c) blaming luck. He doesn’t really have anything else to blame, and I’m sure both the club and the players are happy enough to be out of the firing line in the media.
People want him to take accountability himself and that is fair enough, but when a manager starts to do that (unless they have been at a club for years, like guardiola or klopp) it is usually a sign that they are on the way out. If you sit in front of the press and start saying I’m to blame after every game you’re not going to last too many games. Simple as.

If you were inclined to believe that Slot could turn things around next season, then the summer window is absolutely crucial.

I would cite someone like Kompany who looked way out of his depth at Burnley but given lots of very good players at Bayern, looks a lot better. Luis Enrique failed miserably at Celta Vigo and Roma.

Sometimes being a successful coach is as much about the environment you're in as anything else. Slot was right place, right time last season. This season so many things have gone wrong it's probably made him look worse than he is.

Take this nonsense elsewhere, you are talking about our league winning manager. Fair enough if you think he should go but no need for this abuse.

Would like to see a draw in the Man Utd v Chelsea match this evening. A Man Utd victory would arguably be a better result but I still reckon we can overhaul them.

Burnely are in an extremely competitive Premier league.

Bayern are without a shadow of a doubt at the summit of a league that is nowhere near as competitive as the Premier League (I say that as a Hanover fan).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,229 ✭✭✭riddles

Chelsea have only won once in the last 6 - so i think a United win or draw is the best overall result.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,565 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

We had 157 shots in the 10 games we lost, and scored 10 goals in those games 🤣🤣

Unlucky with injuries whatever, but we really did lose a lot of silly games this season.

we sign 1/4 of a billion worth of forwards, and it still feels like we need a striker .

Way more important to have a buffer against 6th than to be closer to 3rd. United with a tight win is probably the best result for our season. We still have to play them in any case, so third is in our own hands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,309 ✭✭✭Appletart Upsetter

Yes, but they are in the semi-finals of the Champions League also.

My general point is the quality of the players at your disposal is far more important than the inputs of the coach.

We were punished for every mistake we made but we couldn’t punish the other team for their mistakes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,565 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Different standards at Liverpool I know, we want Slot out, while every man and his dog will praise Eddie Howe, who has failed to win 21 of 33 pl games played this season, a man linked with United job.

Had we won, and we should have won, 5 of the ten we lost, we'd be on Arsenals tail, luck, fate, individual errors , all against us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,005 ✭✭✭amber69

We've been piss poor all season, we're lucky to be in the running for champions league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,309 ✭✭✭Appletart Upsetter

You could say the same about United, Chelsea and Villa!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 430 ✭✭CajunSurprise

Arsenal are probably the only team up to a few weeks ago that didn’t have a piss poor run of form all season. They are just having it now at the worst time for them.

Very strange feeling wanting United to score again

Got to say though.. i think Bruno is a fantastic player

    Just puked

Other than PSG and Bayern, I struggle to think of any of the top clubs who are having the sort of season their fans really want.

Arsenal fans will be delighted by the end but definitely don't seem comfortable or happy right now

Chelsea having a mare all season. United were out of the running for trophies before Christmas. City out of CL and soon PL running with rumours of Pep leaving in the summer. Spurs? Ha!

Barcelona and Inter will canter to a league title but fans hugely disappointed with how they went out of the CL. AC Milan and Juventus not challenging. Dortmund a distance second and very poor CL exit. Real Madrid winning nothing and likely going to fire their 2nd manager in less than 6 months.

Who is having a good season other than PSG and Bayern where their fans are genuinely having a great time?

Atletico maybe for their CL run? But 4th in the league.

Nobody in England seems to be having a good time other than clubs like Bournemouth, Sunderland etc finishing higher than expected

It's not good when you're happy Brentford draw and now hoping United get something
