Not to (yet again) speculate, but Tonabrocky is much weaker than it was yesterday here on FM.. Same was observed @ Farmer's Cross before DAB was observed on 7A.

Just putting it out there ;)

Explain please, are you saying the DAB tone is interfering with FM or am I misunderstanding you ?

DAB+ Radio 1 and 2fm simulcasts started autumn 2013, I purchased a Roberts ecologic-15 DAB/ DAB+/ FM RDS clock radio at the time to tune in.

The same clock radio is picking up the new failte test tone on 10D (215.072 MHz) 168 kbps DAB+

Not at all. What I meant was, usually when there is antenna work being done, due to health and safety protocols, usually sites are either outputting reduced power or off entirely. The night before DAB was first observed on 7A in Cork, Farmer's Cross (cosited with Freedom FM, Spirit Radio, Classic Hits, Life FM, Newstalk etc) was on reduced power, about half of the normal signal strength. By morning it was back to usual levels.

Hope this clear it up for you 😄

Now testing in North Tipperary. Strong test tone.

In some areas they are well beyond the testing area. I'm in North Tipperary and i'm recieving a clear and crisp test tone from Mux 2. Testing from Mux 2 only started last week in my area so maybe full testing isn't complete.

On the Fàilte DAB website it states April. No date is given or what stations will be on it which i find odd. You would think that now we are halfway's in to April that there would be a list of radio stations that are going g to join the trial. Not off to a great start.

    Hi,

It was told to me privately that they were delayed due to weather, so that's why. Hope this helps! 😄 Same happened last year, nothing out of the ordinary. Our climate is against us :)))

I assume that all transmission sites will have to switched on with tone for a couple of weeks before going live with stations. Some Cork sites are on nearly two weeks now. We dont know if all of the new sites for Mux 2 are switched on yet.

No they aren't . Most in the Northern part of the coverage area are not on e.g Kiltimagh and the site near Longford. (also Galway City Tonabrocky)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 362 ✭✭toggle toes

I would assume right. More than likely all sites will be tested before official switch on.

Anyone remember Total Dab. They are or were located in Waterford. They promised great things regarding DAB and DAB+. They ran a trial in Waterford. I can't rember what stations were on the trial. Either way they disappeared off the radar regarding their ambitious plans for DAB. Please see link to Total Broadcast who ran the DAB trial. http://totalbroadcast.net/DAB.html

Didn't get the level of incumbent station operator buy in that Failtedab has. No prior attempts at this have.

Failte DAB received between Blarney and Ballincollig in Cork. Far stronger signal than previous trial.

I suppose. My hopes were built up twice regarding the launch of DAB in Tipperary. First when RTE started Trials and then Total Broadcast's effort to launch. I used to drive to Limerick to listen to RTE Gold. That's before RTE introduced DJs. Thankfully Fàilte DAB have come on board. Even hearing the crystal clear test tone on Mux 2 has made me excited 😊

That is slightly disingenuous, Total made a very good attempt at DAB with a line up including Nova,Talksport and their own station Zenith. There was no buy in from the incumbent and only short term licences were available with little or no interest from the regulatory bodies to progress DAB in Ireland.

A decade later and we are still trialling a service with no guarantee that there will be a licence extension this time next year. That there is little or no advertising of DAB+ , no stations listing for either service, is not encouraging.

At least it’s on an almost nationwide scale this time and not just being trialled in smaller regional areas.

And Comreg has since become a member of WorldDAB. I think it's serious this time.

I wasn't been disingenruous To Total DAB. I was just highlighting the fact that they ran a trial. Unfortunately many radio stations refused to go on their Mux. As far as DAB in Ireland at the time there was a lot of negative comments around the radio broadcasting sector. Radio companies were very reluctant to make the switch. Maybe it was the right choice at the time. I guess we will never know.

Yes. We are catching up with the rest of Europe. Still a long way to go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭Orban6

AFAIK, the R&D licence wasn't renewed, much to the operators disappointment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,152 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Total wasn't the only trial attempt, there was also the low power one off Donnybrook, and Dusty Rhodes one alongside RTE in 2006/7.

None ever got real buy-in. The DabIreland Mux2 one got the main Dublin stations, Newstalk and Radio Kerry - so just replicating what we already had on FM. Much more of a purpose to that back then because mixed lineups in cars didnt exist; but it gave nothing new to actually make people change

I would totally agree with your statement. This should be advertised on tv aswell as radio. Also Fàilte DAB should be advertising the launch on every billboard around the country. I know this would cost a lot of money but for it to be a successful it's what needs to happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,152 ✭✭✭✭L1011

The amount of advertising your proposing would cost millions.

    They do not have millions.

It is down to the stations to advertise themselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 362 ✭✭toggle toes

I know it would cost millions even to advertise on TV or radio would get the publics attention. As it stands the listenership is going to be non existent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,785 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Not sure advertising would be much good as easily 80% of radio listening is in cars. If a cars radio doesn't automatically pick up the dab signal then word of mouth will likely suffice

Is there a full list of what’s on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭Orban6

Midlands tx on today? Strong signal, about -65dBm, on approx 199 Mhz.

I can't be any more accurate than than as only checking an a spectrum analyzer so can't check if audio is present.
