Not what they communicated to me anyway, I've a fixed rate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,637 ✭✭✭spakman

Yes, it's fixed rate. I had signed up to fixed rate day/night but they made a mess of it and put me on fixed 24hr.

Over and back for weeks trying to sort, losing the will to keep at them!

At this rate electric heating seems cheaper than kerosene at night and unless you have very efficient boiler and radiators during day as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

So rates are fixed on this plan but they have a get out clause of 30 days notice for a change, "for operational reasons".

    Right so.

As it happens, I have a heat pump as well as an EV. If I could have afforded it I would have got solar too.

I'm currently with Energia and contract for day\night is ending next week.

Flogas was coming up as the cheapest switch earlier today.

However, NO electricity tariff rates are appearing on their website now!

    https://www.flogas.ie/flogas-tariff-rates

Maybe they're in the process of updating them - anyone else able to see them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 805 ✭✭✭glen123

they must be updating their rates (they already went up since 2 days ago so must be another rise)

Call Energia. I rang today as my contract expired yesterday and got 32% discount- Day 0.29cent, Night - 0.1475 (incl VAT) . I have very high usage though especially during the night so that probably helped with the discount level.

Yeah I was only offered 28% which I was delighted with before you rained in my parade 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Was that for a smart meter @glen123?

Flipped over today myself - non-smart D/N meter and best on offer from Energia was a 30% discount giving me 32.73 / 15.69 incl. VAT.

Slightly better than the updated Flogas rates from Easter weekend.

Shudder to think what they will be in 12 months time.

Interesting, the Smart meter D/N rates were MUCH better. I must arrange to change over now.

I was planning to break out of my 24hr plan but now it's not worth doing. The recent increases in day rates on new plans have mostly nullified any savings I'd get from moving more things to a cheaper night rates. I blinked and everything over 30 now.

yes, Smart meter. No peak rates. Night rate from 23:00 to 08.00 all year round

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 204 ✭✭Ballylad

hi, what is best discount for day/night smart/non smart you got with energia recently, was on the 41percent axa energia plan discount last year, cheapest I can find is electric Ireland according to energy pal, energia not budging on their rates, maybe they might move the minute I'm out of contract? (2days left), Thnks

  • Administrators, Computer Games Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,050 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Mickeroo

Energia gave me 28% but others on here did better after that and got 32%. This was on renewal, not as a new customer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 204 ✭✭Ballylad

thanks for reply, what plan did u choose smart/non smart rates inc vat if you can remember

  • Administrators, Computer Games Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,050 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Mickeroo

we activated the smart metre for the first time to get the better rates.

It works out at 31 day, 15.6 night including vat I think. The people who got 32% seem to be on 29 day, 14 night which is very good considering what's out there at the mo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

The current best discount from Energia for anyone this week are as follows:

    • Smart meter: 32% which gives 29.xx/14.xx D/N incl. VAT
    • Non-smart meter: 30% which gives 32.73 / 15.69 D/N incl. VAT

The discount will basically erode as time goes on, and those rates may or may not be available next week etc.

As it's now trending positively, now may be the time to book your smart meter replacement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 204 ✭✭Ballylad

they would not give that today at renewal although I'm still in contract until 17th April, will try then, thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

It seems to be pretty fluid. I only renewed last Monday and got those rates. Someone who renewed a week prior got a better discount %. I'd move fast.

I recently switched to Bord Gais and got the following on their Smart All Day Tariff:

Day Rate: 8am to 9pm (excluding Peak). Discount: 30%**

    Night Rate: 9pm to 8am. Discount: 30%**

Peak Rate: 5pm to 7pm (Mon to Fri only). Discount: 30%**

I've just bought my first EV and am trying to figure out if I'm on the best plan for charging. I can see an option to switch to a smart meter plan for EVs which would make EV charging much cheaper for me but I would move from a 30% overall discount to 20% it seems. Any advice?

Discounts are a fudge, what are the precise per kw/h net rates being offered?

Been there and tried all the various tariffs, ended back where I started on a 24hr plan. Yes, the car was very cheap to run but the other rates were expensive. It really depends on what mileage you're doing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,873 ✭✭✭John arse

That seems very expensive to me,and that peak rate!😳

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Not a good offer at all….keep moving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 204 ✭✭Ballylad

Got an extra 2percent out of them so now 28percent discount on smart plan (can't go back to non smart), 31.67 day, 15.60 night inc vat 11pm to 8am permanent, beats electric Ireland for me as 22000 units with 85/15 day night split with load shifting etc, interesting to see how dynamic pricing works out, they say some of their staff are trying it at the moment, going to be an opt in clause for it in June.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,125 ✭✭✭pureza

Waterpower have been doing dynamic pricing for about 3 years
Their rates are different every month

Their lowest night rate was 16.1c and the highest 23c in the last 6 months

    Lowest day was 25.9,highest 34.3c

So a variation of 9c in day rate and almost 5c in night rate which is quite a lot

    Median day was : 26c

    Median night was :18.87

Their fit is a miserable 10c fixed for solar exports

I'd say thats more "super variable rates" dyanamic pricing changes every half hour and will be based on the day ahead market https://www.semopx.com/

When it was announced I was very optamistic about them but looking at the day ahead market over the last year or so I dont think for me who has a battery and an EV (And I think dynamic pricing will only suit people with batteries and or an EV….) it wont beat Pinergy for predicability and thier FIT rate. The Day Ahead procies on average at night hover around 10cent then when you add the supplier premium on top of that I would expect it to be in the early teens…but who knows..

I think it could suit people who do big mileage because the low time tend to be 4-5 hours or more so if you are doing big mileage then I think it will suit. But it will be for people who know what they are doing and are handy with home automations to be switching on an off stuff.

I am looking forward to see what they offer and maybe I will be surprised. Biggest unknown is the FIT, do they take off a couple cent off the DAM prices or just give you the DAM price?? there is nothing in the CRU paper on how suppliers are to do this

That saying this is tomorrow its actually 4 cent around 13:30 and hover aorund 5 cent for a good few hours..

I don't think export is included in the variable.rate at all. It's a case of I'm fairly sure I've read it in one of the cru documents but couldn't tell you where 😂.

That day rate is just about acceptable, the night rate is very expensive and the peak rate is shocking. There's very few use cases ( large battery, lots of solar, low usage generally, gas or oil heating and hardly ever at home) where that deal would be worthwhile.
