Agree to all of that. Even on Friday, his ability to get up and down to recover from bad drives, his chip in on 17, etc were a huge reason why he won the tournament.

You'd imagine this year didn't take as much out of him, he should be better placed to attack the others this year.

    yeah, simply brilliant.

I watched back the highlights programme again last night, I had not fully appreciated watching live, how well Rory had actually played under pressure tbh. His back to back birdies on the front 9, to get back in the frame, (he was momentarily 3 behind at one stage before canning a key putt to bring it back to 2 back), and then the absolutely brilliant way he played amen corner, especially after not having done at all well there just the day before, were both awesome feats of mental strength & championship golf imho. Also the way he regathered the lead through 12 & 13, & then hung on brilliantly, while extending his lead, really showed his resilience, mental strength & valuable maturity these days imho.

He missed 2 short putts in that round which was a pity for his overall score (& our nerves!) tbh, but his shots on 12, drive on 13, putt from off the back on 16, chip on 17 & even his 2nd shot & bunker shot on 18, considering the pressure he was under, really go to show what an amazing competitor & champion he is. Winning yet another major, his 6th (!!!!!!), and back to back masters, while not even playing his best golf, really shows what a legendary player & champion he now is also. Well done Rory!!

when he was in the bunker on 18, all i could think about is Decambeau on friday to make the weekend. Thankfully rory got it out in one. Very composed back nine and did what had to be done without his best stuff.

Yea i think that is the most obvious next target and would set him up above many of the other greats he is currently mentioned with.

Amazing that 13 months ago he'd have given anything for a Green Jacket and now if he had his pick of majors to win it would probably be the Open or US Open.

Everything to do with the guy is class. He carries himself so well, looking at Patrick Reed waddling around the place reminded me how much I can't stand the guy and how he epitomises everything unpalatable about America.

I know most on here love Rory but he doesn't get even half the credit he and in particular his parents deserve. His parents worked their b****x off - when they first got a sniff they could have something special on their hands - to make his dream come true. Alan Shipnuck's story about 9-year old Rory and Gerry on the range (when Gerry couldn't afford another bucket of balls) just highlights the humble beginnings for him.

This is not Maverick McNealy or JT or Speith, rich kids with money. This is a kid from NI whose parents made his dream come true through toil and effort and everything from cleaning toilets to night shifts in a factory.

Rory could have put his feet up 10 years ago when the going got tough and he had so many dark days that if he was a spoilt only child he could easily have said "couldn't be bothered, its just not worth the heartbreak". But he kept going, kept trying, and eventually knocked down heavens door and made himself immortal. For which he will never be forgotten.

He promoted the Ryder Cup like nobody had for ages. He single handedly saved the PGA tour, he told the Saudi's to stick their money where the sun doesn't shine while others showed that they can never have enough money and that matters more than drive, ambition and legacy. Money can't buy you everything. When they write history books about the greed and avarice of this era, Rory will be the antidote to it. I know he had plenty of money but the point is he knew he didn't need to sell his soul.

Yes he's made mistakes along the way but let he without sin cast the first stone, unlike ours his mistakes are all in the public glare.

Lots of us have a dream, and dreams for our kids. Most of us would love them to come true. Rory and his parents MADE them come through and just like the greats in any walk of life or sport - they found a way.

Thrilled for him, a couple of majors were taken rather than lost by him [Smith & Clark], he can definitely get to doubel digits and fingers crossed he does so.

You look at Wyndham and Brysons US Open wins and he could be so close now

He's an absolute gentleman, I could listen to him being interviewed forever. So honest, so forthcoming and never a dull moment. As you said, a real credit to himself and his family, and everyone he was surrounded by growing up. I hope he goes on to win double digits of Majors.

To everyone who called him a bottler over the years, stick that in your pipe and smoke it lol

I spoke to his father after he won his first West of Ireland, he won it twice in a row.

I said to him he might have Ireland's next pro on his hands and he told me that it was all Rory was talking about at home. That's when he was 15.

In that first win, I think it's the 8th hole. There's a mound on the right side of the fairway, it's a long enough hole. Anyway I've played there a fair few times over the years and I have decent distance and I'd be twenty yards by that mound. Rory was 80 yards past it at 15 years of age.

Lots of people who called him a bottler or choker never held a golf club in their local par 3 let alone stand with a driver in their hand looking down Tea Olive fairway. They're the same people who will call the Irish football team chokers, or the rugby team chokers, or Shane Lowry a choker, or the Mayo footballers chokers.

At top level in sport, the margins are so tiny it can be the bounce of a ball that makes the difference. Cameron Young was on track to prove that in spades at one stage at the weekend! Rory's ball lands behind that tree and he has no shot? Playoff at best.

The level of pressure is just immense and to the victor the spoils.

None of those who call any top sportsmen or team a bottler have any idea what they are on about, they think from the couch "well obviously he should have blasted the penalty", or "obviously he should have passed the ball wide", or whatever.

I think these people just want somebody to hate, to mock, from their armchair and their weapon of anonymity and echo chamber - social media - to validate their pathetic little mind.

Yep and the putting from Cam Smith in the last 9 holes at St Andrews was ridiculous.

The win last year to end the 11yr drought was huge, if the weather is ok for the Open then he should be in contention come Sunday

Hopefully , I'd love to see him win another open.

He seems poised to play really great golf now at each & every major for a (good) few years now, as a really mature, battle savvy multiple major champion, which should hopefully yield the major wins his talent, hard work, resilience & dedication deserves….

He is a credit to himself, his parents & everyone around him.

    A truly great champion!!!!!!

that shot on 16th was brilliant, hard to tell yourself to aim that far away from a target with the correct pace and hope it falls back to the hole. You’ve to really trust it. It was similar with a cam young chip earlier where he played it off the green on purpose, I switched over just as he hit that shot and thought he had mishit it until the commentators said and I saw the result. Don’t think the tv does justice the changes in elevation in some parts of that course, greens etc.

I watched the full press conference after the win on you tube. I could not believe how thoughtful and considered every one of his answers were. No matter what the question, he gave a meaningful reply. It must have gone on for at least 20 minutes and you could see he was getting tired of it though he was trying to hide it.

It’s funny, any time I’m talking to girls about how much I admire him, they always bring up him breaking off the engagement with that tennis player after she’d sent out the wedding invitations and hold it against him. I think that was a sign of character, took more courage than going through with a wedding when he wasn’t fully committed.

Yes, every answer he gives shows his intelligence. I didn't like his quip about Irish food last week though - we often have guests from the US here and they remark that even the cheapest bread in Lidl tastes like its not loaded with additives and corn syrup like theirs is! And they absolutely love our restaurants, so it just seemed unnecessary.

But apart from that, yes every answer he gives shows his intelligence. He's able to get in a subtle dig when he has to as well. A great champion.

And yep, I asked my wife a while ago "would you rather I went ahead with a wedding I wasn't fully committed to, or call it off in advance"? She agreed it was the brave thing to do.

Mcilroy is less robotic than the yanks but thats not the same as intellect.

Mans opinions flip flop more than a fish out of water.

It's the only thing about Rory that annoys me. He says something vehemently and then takes the other side a while later. It's happened a lot over the years.

I presume he isn't playing in Hilton Head this weekend? Its a signature event - does The Master win exempt him?

He has exempted himself more so, he was never in the field announced last week. Everyone else seems to be in, I only saw that Rose withdrew after Sunday's final round.

They got rid of the penalties for missing more than one signature event a year or two ago.

ah yeah, he'll be celebrating, doing the rounds, have press, sponsorshi & pr commitments as well as trying to come back down to earth after a (another) major win high. A well deserved week off.

On a more mid to long term view, it will be interesting to see how Rory manages his schedule & priorities going forward. The three week focused build up to this masters seemed to really agree with him, as he started this major with 2 scintillating rounds to really set up a great win. So I wouldn't be surprised to see a renewed focus on the majors from Rory, with maybe 2-3 weeks off tournament golf before each major to fully prepare for each specific course & major.

While he may not win as many Fed EX events, points or Cups, or DP Tour events & Race to Dubai titles going forwards with this approach, nonetheless a clearer, more intense focus on the majors, alongside less off course distractions (PGA player director, etc, etc, etc) which by and large he has already let go, may well yield even more majors for Rory than otherwise going forward, at the expense of a few less regular tournaments & tour prize money.

As ever he will be fascinating to watch & support. Go Rory!!!

He is playing Doral I believe which is 3 weeks before PGA and then I also ready he is expected to play Quail Hollow which is 2 weeks before it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,633 ✭✭✭daithi7

thanks for that, there goes that theory (of mine) so!! :)

nonetheless, with the result & approach to this masters seemingly suiting him so well ,as indicated by how spectacular he was for the first 2 rounds, & how well he played for the final 14 holes of this masters under humongous pressure, it will be interesting to see does he stick to this schedule, or give himself an extra week 'off' to prepare before specific majors going forwards..….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 964 ✭✭✭FazyLucker

To be fair I'd say he'd have played Quail Hollow on Monday, he absolutely loves the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 336 ✭✭joficeduns1

I think Quail Hollow (Truist Championship) is the week before Aronimink (PGA Champ), not two weeks.

The Masters does allow him that break from competitive play, mainly because he has lots of access to the course for practice. Other majors he probably won't have the same option.

Ha, funny you mention that. My sister has an irrational dislike of him because of some nonsense about how he supposedly treated another ex.

Thought he was going to have an all pars round but got a birdie on his last

Faldo was proud of his round until he messed it up on the last hole
