Engineers Ireland have a video up on how TII have designed the Luas Finglas project, specifically their use of BIM. Building Information Modelling allows for a 3d model of a project to be created, which has many benefits, but possibly the main benefit that Irish society will appreciate is that the design has to be finalised (or near final) far earlier in the project. This means that a project following BIM essentially can't have the same issues that have plagued the NCH, for example, as the design is complete, and a 3d model is available that people can "walk around". The NCH had people discover that they needed doors cut into poured concrete, etc.

It's not a very interesting video, to be honest, with nothing "new" for anyone that was already following the project, but I thought I'd pop it in here anyway. The only properly interesting thing mentioned was the buildings that are currently involved in the JR above were talked about as being up for redevelopment in the future, which is fairly obvious when you think about it. Probably be rezoned once the Luas starts up.

Mad in that case that the current owners are taking legal challenge against the project. All for nothing as their warehouses will be torn down for apartments within a decade.

Allowing them to win twice - with the compo and when they eventually move the premises and sell to a developer. They've probably been advised that there's no harm in trying. They do have some case and even though I don't consider it as big a deal as they claim, they may well get some money or even a buyout option/offer especially if it's cheaper to pay than challenge or if it comes to affect the schedule.

Buyout would be pretty profitable in the long run for TII if it was done right…

Bit of good news, saw Paul McAuliffe mention it earlier.

"The project is now expected to proceed as planned following the dropping of High Court challenges against An Coimisiún Pleanála’s grant of permission for the 4km extension of the Luas Green Line"

Still not funded until 2029, so the project is on ice whilst we appease farmers. We had time to fight the JR on this one

the NDP Sectoral plan says 'by 2029', so if you want to take the governments document literally, it could be anytime before that as well. Having any project with clean planning is a positive, it's progression becomes a political decision, without third party excuses.

There may be issues esb supply availability and construction sequencing with other projects that could affect the programme. Powering up Dublin, busconnects finglas, dart+ West and metrolink all vying for space and connections in the area, while looking to mitigate against compounding disruption. These are technical/delivery challenges and could be overcome.

It still has no funding though

And not likely to get funding with the amount of cash they're throwing at farmers and hauliers….

Yup. 0.5bn€ on hauliers/farmers. Also 1.2bn€ on immigration through IPAS system alone.

Too many media articles just saying it's ready to go, even quoting O'Brien, but few if any mentioning the funding aspect

They'll want to crack on with this, otherwise the densification will happen before a Luas runs up here.

in fairness cart before the horse is standard in the country. It could be the motto.

the Glass Bottle development is nearly finished and they haven't even decided the route for the Luas extension to Poolbeg.

It would be nice if the news articles actually mention it's not funded yet!

"The lodging of the plans follows the adoption of the Jamestown Masterplan which aims to provide 3,500 to 3,800 homes to accommodate a population of up to 8,000 people and a Finglas Luas stop due to open in 2028-2032."

    Certainly won’t be opening in 2028. 😂😂😂

Ah sure we only gave another 65 million to Ukraine 16 days ago

And rightfully so! Shilling for Putin isn’t going to do anything to improve infrastructure delivery in Ireland.

And shilling for Zelensky isnt either thats the problem

This is just how Ireland works. Build a bunch of stubs around in the Docklands directly connected to a tram line directly to the city centre, but build ''sky scrapers'' housing thousands of people at Glass Bottle and everywhere else in the suburbs with no established light rail.

People living at the Glass Bottle site are not going to be car commuters, simply because it’s a pain in the arse to drive around this part of Dublin… they’ll rely more on feet, bike or bus. It’d be great if the Luas Docklands was progressing already, but in the meantime, the route can still be served by higher-frequency buses.

It already goes through Docklands through to the Point.

I think the point (no pun) of the other poster was we wasted a tremendous oppotunity in Docklands by not building anything like high enough.

The greatest ever lie of Irish transport! The 'high frequency bus'! Official Ireland's equivalent of 'the cheque is in the post'.

We have people waiting decades for rail / trams / metro long ago promised but never delivered. Tens if not hundreds of thousands of people bought houses on such empty promises. None of them ever got the high frequency bus they were promised as an 'interim' measure either…

Grand then. Give them nothing at all until the Luas is built.

    And I said higher frequency.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,691 ✭✭✭MayoSalmon

Yeah you would probably be better off as then the thing would actually get built.

Once there is any form of alternative in this country it gives everyone an excuse for doing absolutely nothing.

Dublin is ranked the 3rd most congested city in the WORLD.

The bang of mediocrity in this country is outstanding.

Those ''Most congested cities in the world'' rankings must be taken with a pinch of salt.

Come on. Dublin is not close to the third most congested in the world, not even in Europe. Go to India if you want to see congestion. Go to the 100 biggest cities you won't see anything close to the speed and efficiency we have in Dublin.
