Heard this on Liveline there and also over last few days via interviews.

Cuddihy at least responded to this. Contractor guys on arguing that the goverment need to cap diesel at €1 a litre. Cuddihy asked OK, how much is a litre of diesel now - Ans around €1.80/€2 ..

So Cuddihy did push back saying this would cost the tax payer billions ie to make up that .80c/€1 per litre of diesel for contractors, haulage companies, van drivers and so on and so on. Do people really think at all? At how impossible that would be?

And yes, I hear the next argument that a litre of diesel has €1.60+ in tax. Cut that and it means indirectly the tax payer is still paying for that, paying substantially to keep these contractors in business. How long could the country sustain this kind of thing? And what / who else would suffer to put this in place. essemtially this has been a me me me exercise?

Also heard on 1pm RTE News that this €750m public money is in essense to prop up businesses. This is eating into or already used up the money needed for other sectors going forward eg pensions, health etc. There is no magic money tree. To those arguing Ah shur the country is swimming in money, maybe on paper but Keep the following in mind:

"Ireland's national debt is projected to be around €232 billion by the end of 2025, or roughly €90,000 per worker"

I also note NO ONE is blaming the real cause of the current Crisis. In a nutshell, donald Trumps war of choice against Iran. The straits of Hormuz were working fine until this. And the irony is USA dont need Hormuz to supply it with oil, they have there own supply

NOW he is exacerbating the situation further. His NAVY has just started to blockade the Straits of Hormuz, blocking ALL ships in and out inc Chinese and India tankers. So what ye reckon this will do?? Yes - OIL will rocket up further now and when stocks are back in the forecourts the price per litre is going to be even higher eating into any cuts supplied by the government so far, in fact in a week or two we may see any government reductions completely eaten up as the litre price rises and rises.

If this whole situation continues, we are facing squarely into a World recession which includes us, so people need to wake up to this possibility. I am not wishing this to happen .. but IT IS, right in front of us as a possibility and we will not be able to sustain sectoral supports one by one, especially businesses.

Finally, are there TOO MANY contracters, Haulage companies in this business area in Ireland ( with a small market in general ) anyway? Is that the real reason they are under pressure? Too many people feeding from the same trough perhaps?

Its actually quite worrying how easy it is to influence the general public with populist rhetoric.

    people are stupid

Empty the coffers and what then if the 2 wars continue to rise the underlying price of fuel?

Go and car share for fecks sake and divide your commute bill by 3

Do your own practical things and don’t be expecting the impossible

Double the min wage of most countries

Treble the pension of the UK,one of the world’s biggest economies

Solar panels appearing all over the place part paid for by Seai grants

    Etc etc etc

People need to cop on and have some common sense

People have no idea how exposed our economy is.

    total tax revenue 2025 - €105.7bn

total corporation tax - €32.9bn. - 2 companies make up 40% of that.

Declining profits at MNC's would kill us.

The contractor I also heard on Liveline put up a FB post about having to close his ag contracting business

    https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=949392071171986&id=100083036065121

He has other businesses mind. Cranes, quarry and aggregates, tree removal, loads of plant basically

Had a look on his FB page.

    He's a big fan of:

    Trump

    James Conway

    Chris Duffy

    Eddie Hobbs

    Charlie Kirk

    et al

    5398.jpg 5376.jpg 5360.jpg 5358.jpg 5356.jpg

    Thats just a few.

Nice lifestyle though by the looks of it. I'd envy him quite a few of the cars he has, and I'd love a custom racing sim set-up like he had deliver last year.

Probably all on credit though, its not like people are flush these days, I know.

Hate to see anyone go out of business these days 😒

    You'd be surprised.

Personally, I almost find the appalling grammar and spelling more offensive than the racism and fascism. Almost.

Mad that in this age of Chat GPT, spell checking, error lines and public education that people still find ways to mangle the language.

These lads are essentially the equivalent cowboy building contractors of the 00s. Leveraged up to their eyes in debt, living a lavish lifestyle and expecting the tax payers to bail them out if it all goes belly up. History repeating itself unfortunately.

"Ireland's total Official Development Assistance (ODA) was approximately €2.35 billion in 2024, representing 0.56% of its Gross National Income (GNI), including support for Ukrainian refugees."

So the gov has - so far intervened AT HOME with 3 quarters of a billion on this crisis ( €750m ), thats, already, a third of the total money "given" to Foreign countries. So our spend to foreign countries is NOT huge relatively .. as it is made out to be by some

Even when you present them with the cold facts about the protest "leaders" they will either accuse you of being paid by the government, or spreading fake news. IQ tests should be mandatory before any future elections.

Is the IQ test for the candidates or the voters?

A poll yesterday in a newspaper showed over 50% support for the protests to 38% against.

Communications Minister Patrick O'Donovan criticises media coverage of the protests, calls for Comisiun na Mean to look into it.

    NUJs Seamus Dooley criticising remarks.

The Middle East crisis, and associated fuel cost issue, shows no sign of ending. If anything it may get worse in the short term. Expensive energy is going to make everything dearer. There will be lots of people feeling the squeeze.

There is no way this government, or any government, can prevent the big hit to national income that is coming if world fuels issue persists.

In the 1973-74 ME oil crisis national income fell by about 5%. The government tried to cushion this by borrowing substantially to avoid cuts and to support various reliefs. As a consequence as a country we got into a spiraling national debt crisis and stagflation. Successive governments failed to make the really hard choices needed or thought they could get out of it by borrowing and spending more. And, of course, we kept electing parties that promised easy options.

As a result we ended up with the severe 1980s recession with massive unemployment and even more massive emigration. A whole young generation disappeared from parts of the country. It was only when at last a government brought in severe (and very painful) public spending cutbacks in the late 1980s that the basis for the 1990s recovery was laid. We wasted 15 years and caused much misery by pretending that very hard decisions could be avoided.

Lets hope we can avoid repeating the same mistake. But I am not so sure we will. Or that any parties that spelled this out would get very far in an election in the current environment.

I’d rather as a tax payer, pay the shortfall to have diesel at 1 euro , than where and who my tax has been squandered on in the last few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,161 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Ya it's absolutely not fiscally viable for the government to maintain pricing at 1 euro. On top of that we'd be violating EU directives. So you can have your fantasies but the government will absolutely not be doing that. Our fuel costs are comparable to other EU states btw. Nowhere in the EU is remotely close to a euro for the price of fuel, it's just a fantasy.

MM was on the 9 news last night and I thought he was very reasonable and well rounded.

It's disappointing to see more protests today. What do they want? Free fuel?

Oh yes, a chant from a protest was targeting MM to step down. How will that help the grobal sh1t storm that's happening? How will that reduce the cost of fuel? Other posts online from protesters want the government to collapse. How will that help the global crisis? Do people really think a different government will be formed outside of FF and FG? SF will never be able to make a government because they don't have enough numbers. Why haven't they increased their party numbers? Will SF do better? They talk the talk but that's about it.

So you'll pay more income tax so that you can purchase diesel for €1/l?
