If the protestors weren't already aware of that from the past 6 weeks, then they need to be spoken down to. Perhaps with crayons and a puppet show next time.

They probably thought the Straits of Hormuz was on the moon and the astronauts were going up to have a look at it.

They were obstructing our fuel supplies, it was very much so necessary to address what they were saying.

Sure one of the lads they appointed to speak on their behalf is a red hat wearing, Maga spouting lunatic who supports Trump so much he revels in joking about the rape of young women.

That's the sort of muppets you're dealing with.

It's the job of the leader of a country to step forward in times of crisis whether that crisis is obvious or otherwise. The only thing you should assume as leader is that you need to lead. It's looking like the measures announced yesterday are as a result of protests rather than the government being proactive and showing any semblance of a plan to deal with this as best as circumstances allow.

If anything the measures seem wholly inadequate, for the general public, especially no move on home heating oil. This may end up spawning more protests. People are seeing the 10c reduction on diesel/petrol as insulting. You get more back for bringing bottles back to the recycling machines.

You're right of course, but nowadays opinions get dismissed without any consideration as to their merits, just because of the source.

I doubt the ringleaders would be inclined to listen to reasoned argument.

The reality is these guys have more in common with the jokers goons from the Batman movie who wanted to blow up the city of Gotham than they do with ordinary working protestors

No need for facial recognition or public appeals to identify them: their license plates will assist Gardaí to round them up in coming weeks.

That isn't going happen. Nothing was wrecked or destroyed, set on fire or looted.

The optics of this already is absolutely horrendous for the coalition, they are going to get battered over the next week and beyond.

The idea they are going to spend the next few weeks arresting 100s or 1000s of people is silly and has no basis in reality and if anything will likely increase the protest.

People need to calm down a small bit.

Or, alternatively, if you're not a complete moron, you are well aware that is what is happening and don't need it explained to you like a toddler 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 993 ✭✭✭batman75

Maybe the ringleaders aren't beacons of rationality but the optics are of a Government fire fighting than being in control of the situation. The blockades caused me yesterday to use more fuel than I normally need to due to being diverted so I'm not exactly thrilled either.

I note the rolling blockade on the M9 J2 to J3 Northbound dissolved quickly this morning.

There was another one at Kill M7 Eastbound that appeared earlier but has dissipated by now.

My local Traffic WhatsApp group reported a convoy of guards heading south from Naas to deal with the M9 blockade, seems to have done the trick.

Looks as if we're seeing the dying embers of the dispute.

Whatever the intellectual level of those you rule it's up to a leader to provide leadership in times of crisis and Martin has failed miserably here.

Spot on. They’ll really struggle with the fact he is centre right conservative who is tough on immigration BUT is very pro EU and anti Russia!

Again, one of the ringleaders posts in support of Trump on his Facebook page (and that's probably the least worst of his content which includes mocking disabled people, racism and jokes about rape). You cannot reason with abject stupidity like that. It's a waste of time.

So, don't speak down to protestors, but also, try to give them an inspiring speech explaining everything in simple terms…. even though the situation is entirely fluid (no pun intended), based on factors outside of their control, difficult to predict (considering the Numpty-in-Chief on the USA side), and that rushing in with extreme measures by just cutting excise and taxes across the board would have considerable long-term impact on government funding, inflation, and other government services.

And yet, there are still protests today.

No speech that Martin or anyone else gave about this situation would have prevented these protests. Again, either they understand and are protesting anyway, or they don't understand, in which case… crayons and puppet-show.

Oh just give them what they want, Garth Brooks can do five nights. Now f off.

Laws were broken, it sets a very dangerous precedent to allow law breaking of any kind in the name of "protesting". Just because this crowd were decked out in flat caps and high-viz jackets instead of Canada Goose doesn't make them any more law abiding.

Sadly, I agree that I can see this government being too cowardly to direct the GardaI to pursue arrests but I think it's a dangerous mistake. This ignorant rabble represent a very real danger of becoming an Irish version of MAGA. Thankfully no "charismatic" leader like Trump has emerged from them yet and our system of democracy is a lot stronger than that in the US but the message needs to be sent that peaceful protesting means marching with placards and banners or the farmers' traditional slow parade of tractors through Dublin city not heavy goods vehicles and a bunch of pick up trucks barricading state infrastructure.

A certainty that Russians were involved (via social media) in the incitement of this protest and the tactics used. The only question is whether any of the "spokepersons" were aware of this or whether they were just easily manipulated useful idiots. More likely the useful idiot explanation.

exactly, Loads of drama queens in here, You wont see them refusing the reduction on the fuel price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,386 ✭✭✭bloopy

If they tried, it would be the most idiotic move they could pull.

This was handled very poorly and the last thing they need is to rile people up again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,796 ✭✭✭almostover

It's not possible to refuse the reduction on fuel prices. Unless you know a filling station that allows for overpayment of tax on fuel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 58,606 ✭✭✭✭Necro

The drama queens are still out in force blocking up the roads.

They've been moved on from their tantrums at our countries fuel depots thankfully.

While I agree it wouldn't be best to start investigating or chasing up on protestors from last week, the new measures were announced yesterday evening, and fair warning given that further protests which include illegal behaviours will be cracked down on. That has to start happening at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 852 ✭✭✭JohnDoe2025

The failure was in the leadership of the Gardai who were far too slow to take on these "protestors".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,906 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

Tarring all the protestors or the people who support the protest as a scum bag rabble was the mistake we made last week or equating them with the rioters in Dublin a couple of years ago is just silly.

That is what Big Populist Jimmy tried to do on Thursday, It at least doubled the protest. He then had to be locked in his house with the WiFi turned off.

The U-Turn from Harris at least was swift.

I must have watched 60+ people interviewed not involved in any protest the past week on, RTE, Virgin, Indo, etc.

100% of them said they supported the protest, the split was the manner of the protest. This would also be reflected in people I have met in real life.

    Again, time to calm down.

Edgelording on the internet about rounding up 1000s of people is the type of nonsense you would expect from the ne'er-do-wells who attached themselves to the protest.

Why would the Taoiseach make an address that would destabilise the country's economy so some dimwits can feel better about themselves?

Are people that thick that they need these obvious things explained over and over in ever simplified detail?

Diesel and Petrol are getting another 10c off per liter. When you include the 20c/15c given a few weeks ago, the 2c NORA levy being abolished and the carbon tax increase of 2.5c to be delayed gives a saving of 34.5c to diesel drivers and 29.5c for petrol drivers which is a very nice package indeed before even considering the further subsidies for farmers and hauliers

At this rate there will be less taxes on filling a diesel than there will be filling an EV by the end of the year

Unfortunately, once you have Yaxley-Lennon and Duffy protesting alongside you, you need to take a break and try and come back later and make it clear they are not welcome.

Their piece of sh*t aura encapsulates everyone.
