Big mistake in my view saying the army were coming in as no way would they have actually engaged with the protesters but have given the protesters a real boost and got their supporters backs up and there is quite a lot of support for these bums.If the usual troublemakers kick off in Dublin and fuel starts getting scarce in a few days ,support might slip.I still expect something to be cobbled together to give an out .

For all the people that are against the protest, any package given out to Irish housholds and forcourts will they be giving that back to the goverment or all they happy to be keyboard warriors and reap the benifits .

Fuel starts to get scarce? I'm in Cork, every garage I passed yesterday was out of fuel.

My son goes to a special school, we got an email Friday to say they can't guarantee school transport will run on Monday because of lack of fuel and blockades, which means kids who need a proper routine will have it broken.

Don't dare blame the government for this, they are in talks with the recognised bodies, this is wildcat strikes by people who don't have a plan. Holding country to ransom. Pricks.

When fuel starts getting scarce..... its already scarce. These arseholes are holding the countries fuel supplies to ransom but blocking fuel depots

Any " package " that comes won't be as a result of these clowns in hi vis jackets acting like the fu****g Taliban demanding to see proof of hospital appointments! They need to be cleared off the streets today!

    Exactly.

I saw some independent TD earlier trying to spin that the school buses won't operate on Monday because they can't afford fuel.

He reiterated that it had nothing to do with there being no fuel, just blame the fuel price.

Like these buses could run fine two weeks ago when fuel was the same price.

Thats the level of gombeenism we are dealing with here.

Absolutely, its time these scrotes who are being represented by convicted criminals were called out for what they are ! They need to cleared off the streets today!

This is such a stupid false equivalency I see bandied about by posters fairly regularly here. What do you expect people to do, ask the cashier in the petrol station to pay more?

Perhaps while we're at it the protestors can compensate people for the excess fuel people had to use for being subjected to lengthy delays.

Or businesses like DPD and DHL can expect to be compensated for interruption to their services due to the fuel blockades.

Perhaps the protestors will put their hands in their pockets and pay for the Garda overtime required to police them.

See how that braindead level of thinking works?

Also any deal that comes out of yesterday's meeting was likely to happen regardless since it was scheduled for a week.

If your household were to be given a fuel allowence will you be marching down to the social welware office and demanding they take it back and spout what you just typed . Let me guess you wont and you will happily take it .

You should come down from your high horse the air seems to be thin up there.

That's the annoying part of all of this. The talks were just accelerated, the protests have achieved nothing other than effectively removing fuel from the country almost completely.

Maybe the protestors are actually closeted environmental activists? That would be rather funny if the situation wasn't so serious.

Don't qualify for a fuel allowance. Sorry.

Are the protestors going to go to DPD offices and pay them back for having to suspend their services from today.

Of course they're not. Don't be so ridiculous

And not everyone is affected by the fuel price rises to the same extent anyway. Or will benefit from "the package". Any changes to white or green diesel won't affect me. I use kerosene to heat the house and my hope is that the Trump madness will be resolved before the end of the Summer.

The unnecessary economic damage caused by this protest could last longer, if it is not resolved one way or another quickly.

You know the fact fuel stations have shortages means they'll probably start to bump up their prices further on the back of this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,613 ✭✭✭csirl

Some of the vehicles on O"Connell St are from the UK. Our government cant reduce prices for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 58,606 ✭✭✭✭Necro

That's the point I was (probably poorly) trying to make. Nobody's going to ask protestors to repay the economic damage they're currently causing so why on earth would anyone who does happen to benefit from any potential (and I say potential because nothing is announced yet) package be expected to not accept it.

It's a bonehead, outright idiotic position to take.

    High horse indeed.

Fuel prices just seem to be a Trojan horse for a whole host of issues that get peddled typically by the far right.

I see some groups on the like of Facebook are calling for a general election. Do people really want the leaders of this madness to lead our country? Imagine them trying to deliver a budget or work with the likes of the IDA to bring in FDI.

I know this country most certainly has it's problems but I don't think it is a terrible place to live at all.

I would also add that we run the risk here of destroying our economy. Imagine that, our own people destroying our own economy.

Why dont you go do something about , if everyone else are idiots should be easy for someone like you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,272 ✭✭✭realdanbreen

I agree, but I also believe it's time to meet fire with fire when dealing with these pricks. They need to be cleared off the streets and motorways today using whatever means necessary.

You seem to be getting annoyed by the fact posters simply don't agree with you.…

This has been allowed to continue for too long. Critical infrastructure blocked. People forced to cancel appointments. Emergency services curtailed. Medical supplies at risk. Vulnerable members of the community being even more isolated than normal.

I'm all for protests but this is just pure unadulterated thuggary. It is concerning to me that a small group of scumbags with zero empathy for the disruption they are causing can bring the country to its knees and all the government seems to be doing is issuing strongly worded statements on RTE. The government should be doing everything it can to protect its citizens and remove these moronic thugs from their blockades without further delay. If the protesters have a problem with that, let them fight it in the courts at a later date.

Sure, because they're on the right trajectory with the 3cpl from their last effort...

More likely its the same crowd that are up in arms over refugees mixed in farmers and truckers who should have more sense.

We have alot of issues in this country but destroying our economy is not the way to fix it. We're all dealing with high energy prices due to the actions of 2 madmen and now they've denied all their fellow citizens fuel, to get on with making a living. I'm sure they'd get widespread support if they went about it the right way but with this line of action they can get fcuked.

I come from a farming background and work in an industry thats fairly fuel intensive and I dont support this whatsoever.

You're a big Trump fan iirc

How much of the blame for the current fuel crisis do you lay at his door?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,812 ✭✭✭yagan

This has been my biggest criticism of how this has been handled. It was obvious that far right grifters were involved so the longer they were let stay the more entrenched they became.

It is essentially an insurrection against society.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 58,606 ✭✭✭✭Necro

Your position is that anyone who is against these protests shouldn't be entitled to the benefits.

I was merely pointing out to you that it works both ways.

It wasn't me getting on a high horse in the first place at all and making unrealistic demands for people who don't support your position.

Apologies if that upsets your worldview.

Don’t know how I’ll benefit from targeted measures towards hauliers and farmers.

I agree with what you're saying but I'd just point out that under this monetary system, since 2008, monetary inflation is going to happen one way or another. The Straits embargo is just a super-accelerant, not the cause.

If you perpetuate cheap money (e.g. 10-year Treasury notes are still relatively cheap), commercial entities will borrow and park it in fixed assets (like housing and farmland). That's going to continue for the forseeable and the squeeze will be on non-asset owners as wages don't keep up.

Political radicalism, left-wing and right-wing, will rise almost inevitably as inflation rises. This decade we've had the rise of Sinn Fein (with a historic result in 2020), the Dublin riots in 2023, and now the blockade.

Inflation has been happening since currency was introduced. It was a contributory factor to the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

We are not even in an historically high inflationary period.
