Smart plan, he must have a smart meter, it definitely looks like the way to go to get a good D/N rate with a decent standing charge. It looks like the old typ D/N meter's days are numbered.

Yep it's a smart meter but the plan is the same as a standard day night MCC02 plan. The only difference is the night rate is 2300-0800 year round and doesn't change when the clocks go forward.

Exactly the same, €336 I think off the top of my head.

did you just ring energia up and ask for their best rate, I’m with Energia too, contract is up soon, that’s a pretty good day and night rate

How do you know if you can do the day/night rate offers ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭cunnifferous

Yes that's it basically. Now that you know what they are offering, demand the same.

Did you not sign up to the 18 month plan last year?

12 month! Felt it was too much of a gamble and thought prices would surely fall.

I spoke to them today and the discount has been discontinued.

Gave me a rate of 26.41 24hr variable rate including vat.

I wanted to get a 24hr rate so there isn't a heavier rate depending on the day. See below my usage for last year. When I uploaded it onto Bonkers it was recommended an Electric Ireland Day Night Peak rate.

How did you manage 12 months? I thought they only offered an 18 month contract to BWG customers? That's all I was offered

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 Alfiedoodle

I rang them and asked for that tariff, no way would they come anywhere near it, looks like I will be moving to someone else who has a cheap enough night and day rate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,725 ✭✭✭geographica

Is there an AXA discount electricity codes knocking around still? Probably a thing of the past

Signed up with Energia who offered 30% off their standard rates on 12 month contract, works out €0.2986 cent per unit (incl VAT) and a standing charge of €300.91 per annum

Standard meter, any better deals out there? have 14 day cooling off period

    Cheers

I don’t know if this is the right place and I have asked similar on reddit and didn’t get very far.

Bils kept going up and up, so started equalizer payments, then seen 4 months of the same usage (and still in march but could tell me what I used in April).

Found you can check your own meter reading on esb networks and I did and also tried to supply my own readings, but said no need as smart meter and would issue a bill (it was overdue and I was told because of bank holiday)

Bill arrives into my account, I go from 140 in credit too owning them 11 or so, bill was 150 or so, but I thought was being covered by equaliser payment (100 a month they set it at)

I have stopped equaliser payments and did look on bonkers/switcher/energy pal and I think I would save 67 a year moving too flowgas (heard not good)

So, a long story, but wondering is this the same experience others have had? Are this the famous reading issues I have heard about?

Huh? Level pay doesn't stop you being liable for actual usage. The whole point of level pay is that they average your payment for the year you overpay the low usage months (usually summer) to build a credit to cover high usage months. Clearly you didn't have a credit after 4 months winter usage. I'm with flogas for years and they are grand I deal with customer service by email only since the phone is so slow.

Well i thought the idea was they look at your bills and say x is the average amount, so half that and thats your amount each month or even a bit over, rather than the reverse then the customer thinks they have money over and the next day its the opposite.

I am trying to see if its out of the frying pan and into the fire for a euro or so a week saving.

I rang energia earlier and there's not a chance I was getting those rates or anything close to it. Do you use a lot of electricity or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭cunnifferous

No I'd say about average. Average bill of €150 per month. I'm rolling off a 41% discount so maybe that meant they didn't want to offer me something much worse? Someone else in the EV forum got offered same.

My contract with Energia is up this week (I’m currently on a day/night rate with a non-activated smart meter).

I downloaded my usage data from ESB Networks and uploaded it to EnergyPal. Based on that, the SSE Airtricity Smart EV Max plan came out as the best option, with a 30% discount.

However, I wasn’t able to switch online, so I called SSE Airtricity. They told me they couldn’t activate my smart meter straight away. Instead, I’d need to switch to a standard day/night plan for about two weeks first, and then move to the smart tariff.

The issue is that by then, I wouldn’t be considered a new customer anymore, so I’d only qualify for a 25% discount instead of the 30%.

Has anyone else come across this?

I also tried calling Energia to see if they’d offer a better deal, but couldn’t get through yesterday.

they look at your annual usage - says it's €1200 for the year for the sake of simplicity, they bill you €100 a month. Assuming they've got it right you can basically ignore the bills and after 12 months your balance will be zero, but in the interim you may be in credit or in debit. However if you actually use €1500 worth of units, after 12 months your balance will be €300. Most of the companies will adjust the level pay amount as you go along based on your actual usage to avoid this.

Yeah thats what I thought would happen but the system or meter readings has made a hames of it.

We went from two bi monthly bills being the same usage, to not the same usage, setting up and checking the esb network readings was a great help.

The first bill was 273, so assume the next being the same usage would have been the same, a live chat and phone later suddenly the usage changed and our next bill is 151.

First time moved in with herself in June and trying to get a handle on bills etc!

Cheers, I pushed again but best I could get was 29 day, 33 peak and 16 night, so I took that. I was going to go with Flogas but they've again revised their numbers upwards, they're now offering 30c as their 24 hour rate compared with 26c only a few days ago, so I'm happy to renew with energia now and forget about it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭cunnifferous

Why did you go with the plan with a peak rate in it!? There is a day night plan for smart meters with no peak.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 294 ✭✭Heiser

The day rate for the no peak plan is slightly higher than the plan with a peak rate. Im usually in work during peak hours so having a slightly lower day rate suits me better.

The best discount I could get with energia is 30% off standard rates, so aim for at least that for anyone else renewing with them.

They also asked me did I want to lock that discount rate in for a 2 year contract rather 1, I refused.

Have to do my gas next, Flogas at 8.99c incl VAT looks the cheapest on the market right now but trying to get through to them on the phone to see if they can better it involves stupidly long wait times.

BGE at 8.94c and lower standing charge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 294 ✭✭Heiser

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,897 ✭✭✭beachhead

That was quick but still a lower standing charge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,727 ✭✭✭✭guil

Your usage will likely still differ but the actual payment amount will stay the same. It was just a fluke that the 2 months had the same usage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,186 ✭✭✭jeffk

Two bi monthly bills, but as if by magic a live chat and phone call with word of esb networks and council gave us pictures of the meter and it changed

Energia renewal on the previous 41% discount from last year:

    32% discount

    Day 29.91c - Night 14.74c - SC 331.97c

    or Smart meter activation

    Day 28.65c - Peak 31.17c - Night 15.75c (no overusage charge) - SC 265.01c

Heavy user always above 2000kwh bimonthly with 2 EVs so tempted to finally give in and activate the smart meter
