Very impressed with the Spanish PM. Finally someone that isn't afraid to speak out.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

No, they are focusing on the fuel protests, I'd imagine.

I said that a particular poster had made posts which were anti-Semitic. That to me indicates that there are anti-semites posting here.

I abhor all forms of racism, whether it be that poster describing British (not Israeli, so no condunding it with an anti-Israeli stance) Jews as being members of an "Abhorrent Tribe" (and clarifying that their use of the word tribe was indeed deliberately intended to reference all Jews), or the Israeli government trying to enact a capital punishment law that only applies to Palestinians, to use another example. Both are disgusting racism. Both should be called out because of their racist nature.

Would you join me in condemning both instances of racism and thinking that such racism should be called out without fear?

It must be almost impossible to identify a son or daughter or mother or father or grandparent or baby from a body part. There are posters who refuse to condemn these atrocities. The final death toll from April 8th may be close to October 7th.

    https://www.lemonde.fr/en/international/article/2026/04/09/such-carnage-defies-belief-lebanon-crushed-by-israeli-bombs-counts-its-dead_6752256_4.html#

In the span of 10 minutes, in a macabre choreography, Israeli forces carried out around 100 strikes in the heart of residential neighborhoods.

"We received many children, disemboweled and eviscerated, amputated or with cranial trauma. And also, many women. Some die on the way," lamented Karl Jallad, the chief physician at Rizk Hospital. By early evening, four dead and around 40 wounded, most in critical condition, had been brought in. "This is the first time, during this war and in the autumn 2024 conflict, that we have received so many children after airstrikes. That is because the strikes took place in residential neighborhoods and on buildings where families lived,"

    https://www.thenationalnews.com/news/mena/2026/04/08/dozens-killed-in-beirut-massacre-as-israel-drops-100-bombs-in-10-minutes/

The relentless sound of sirens filled Lebanon's capital on Wednesday after Israel launched a massive wave of strikes on Beirut and around the country, killing at least 254 people and injuring more than 1,000.

It was the deadliest day for Lebanon since the war began on March 2.

Israel said it attacked 100 Hezbollah “command centres and military sites” in 10 minutes, but provided no evidence of a Hezbollah connection to any of the sites.

Israel completely off whatever leash there was.

Sometime Israel will be made to pay and all the hiding under ‘antisemitism’ won’t save them.

Like October 7? And that will unleash another cycle of violence.

Somebody has to step in. And I do think that these armed resistance groups, or whatever you would like to call them, are a part of the problem.

They perpetuate the conflict and provide Israel with the pretexts/excuses for their crimes.

And the dominant Israeli public position seems to be that Israel are helping Lebanon by eliminating the scourge of Hezbollah.

(Dan Perry expressed elements of this thought process on Al Jazeera yesterday)

It's gaslighting by an abuser ("see what you made me do?"), IMHO.

If the idea is 'making Israel pay', October 7th shows how that kind of thinking plays out in reality.

And on antisemitism, I don’t see Israel 'hiding' behind it, especially after October 7, when there's been a clear rise in antisemitic incidents. Calling that out is entirely justified, and any serious discussion should take that seriously.

They clearly are when the likes of Bibi tries to conflate valid criticism of Israel's actions as anti semtism. I am not denying there has been a rise anti semitism since October 7th. There has also been a rise in racism against Palestinians and Arabs too. I have seen numerous examples of both on social media. I agree with the poster Enduro that it should be all called out, but unfortunately it isn't .

Around 2,000 murdered in Lebanon by Israel since the start of March Over 300 killed on 8 April - bodies are still being taken from the rubble and many of the injured may die so this figure will increase substantially.

    https://gulfnews.com/world/mena/death-toll-from-israeli-raids-on-lebanon-rises-to-303-killed-and-1150-injured-1.500502055

Those responsible need to be pursued with the same vigour Israel has pursued the war criminals of the second world war.

My late father served there 3 times with UNIFIL.

He would be very sad to see this. He always had great time for the Lebanese country and its people.

The death toll on April 8 has already reached 357

    https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2026/04/a-breakdown-of-israels-heavy-bombardment-of-beirut-on-april-8.php

On the afternoon of April 8, Israel launched its deadliest and most intense wave of airstrikes in Beirut since the war with Hezbollah restarted in early March. Initial reports claimed that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had dubbed this wave of strikes “Operation Eternal Darkness,” a nod to the ninth Passover plague.

On April 9, Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health, which is currently headed by Rakan Naserreddine, a Hezbollah-affiliated minister within the Lebanese cabinet, issued a non-final casualty count from all Israeli strikes in the country the previous day, without breaking down the numbers specifically for Beirut and its suburbs. It said that 303 individuals had been killed across Lebanon, including 30 children, 71 women, and nine elderly individuals, and 1,150 were wounded. The next day, the ministry updated the total to 357 dead and 1,223 wounded, in yet another non-final count.

Israel does not intend to stop.

    https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20260412-israeli-ministers-hint-at-possible-resumption-of-attacks-on-iran/

Israeli ministers on Sunday hinted at a possible resumption of attacks on Iran, with Energy Minister Eli Cohen saying that Tehran could be hit if no agreement is reached, Anadolu reports.

“The nuclear issue is international, and it’s good that (US President Donald) Trump has set the red lines on the issue,” Cohen told the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth.

“If there is no deal, Iran can be hit,” he added.

Regarding Lebanon, where the Israeli army has expanded its attacks, Cohen said Israel should not only strike army forces, but also Lebanon’s facilities and infrastructure.

“I have said this in the cabinet. I do not see a high chance of success for these negotiations,” he said, as Tel Aviv and Beirut agreed to hold their first meeting in Washington on April 14 aimed at securing a ceasefire and launching direct talks.

This is the contempt that the US and Israel have for Lebanon. Meanwhile Israel continues to attack medical staff.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c20dd5ynxz9t

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will speak to the Lebanese President Joseph Aoun today, cabinet security member Galia Gamliel says on Israeli Army radio.

It comes after President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social - on Wednesday night US time - that Israeli and Lebanese leaders will be speaking "tomorrow".

On Thursday, an official in Lebanon's presidential office told the BBC they were unaware of upcoming contact with Israel.

Israeli occupation forces carried out three consecutive strikes targeting ambulance teams in the town of Mayfadoun in Lebanon’s Nabatieh district, according to a statement issued by the Emergency Operations Center of the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.

The attacks, according to the statement, killed three paramedics and injured six others, with one paramedic missing and unaccounted for.

Turning the place into another Gaza -

"Towns and villages in southern Lebanon are being levelled by Israeli demolitions, satellite images and videos obtained by BBC Verify reveal.

BBC Verify analysis found more than 1,400 buildings had been destroyed since 2 March based on verified visual evidence.

This is just a snapshot of the overall damage caused by Israeli air strikes and demolitions, because of limited access on the ground and available satellite imagery. The true scale is likely to be much higher.

Israel's levelling of these structures comes after Defence Minister Israel Katz's order on 22 March to "accelerate the destruction of Lebanese homes" near the Israeli border based on the "model in Gaza" as part of its campaign against Hezbollah.

The systematic demolition of these towns and villages may amount to a war crime, international law experts told BBC Verify."

It was an eventful day for Lebanon. President Trump imposed a ceasefire on Israel which Hezbollah agreed to adhere to. Meanwhile the President of Lebanon refused to meet Netanyahu.

    https://www.palestinechronicle.com/under-iranian-pressure-lebanon-ceasefire-announced-as-aoun-refuses-netanyahu-talks/

Despite Trump’s earlier claim that Aoun would speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Lebanese president rejected the idea of direct talks.

According to a Lebanese official speaking to the Associated Press, Aoun told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that direct communication with Netanyahu is inappropriate under current conditions, citing ongoing Israeli airstrikes and destruction across Lebanon.

Anger in Israel over Lebanon ceasefire … just when they were hoping to complete phase one (a sizeable land grab up to the Litani river).

    https://www.palestinechronicle.com/full-surrender-inside-israels-uproar-over-trump-imposed-lebanon-ceasefire/

A wave of anger and criticism has swept across Israel following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, with political figures, local leaders, and media outlets denouncing the move as an imposed decision that sidelines Israeli leadership.

According to Israeli media reports, the ceasefire was announced from Washington before any formal discussion or vote within the Israeli cabinet.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly informed ministers of the decision only after it had already been declared, prompting widespread criticism over what many described as a collapse in decision-making sovereignty.

    Settling in permanently.

    https://english.almayadeen.net/news/politics/-israel--hires-settlers-to-raze-south-lebanon-homes--bonuses

Haaretz, citing military officials, reported that dozens of engineering vehicles have been deployed to southern Lebanon in recent weeks. The report added that much of the demolition work is being carried out by civilian contractors, some of whom receive financial incentives based on the number of buildings destroyed, highlighting a systematic approach of large-scale demolition.

I have found on my various deployments that, to no great surprise, 99% of the folks are good humans who don’t really care who is running the country as long as they see a good life for their kids and a reasonable price for their vegetables. The problem is that final one percent who have different priorities.

My issue with UNIFIL is that their job isn’t to be friendly to the natives or to build relationships with the community. Nothing wrong with doing it, but that’s not really why Ireland has had a battalion of folks with guns and armored vehicles there for decades. There was a time in the 70s and early 80s that UNIFIL took a somewhat proactive role in things, but that died for thirty years. What was the point in being there?

Some time after the 2006 conflict the UNIFIL charter was changed by the UN to be a little more useful in theory, to help Lebanon actually control its own territory, but in practice, it was business as usual. Drive around, make friends with the locals, hide when bullets start flying.

A few years ago, UNIFIL started actually acting upon this change in charter, helping the Lebanese government actually assert its authority in the border area, which apparently hasn’t been well received by a certain local non-government organisation. This week a French UNIFIL soldier was killed in an ambush. Three Indonesians were killed by ambush and roadside bomb (two incidents) last month. The last Irish soldier killed was shot in an ambush in 2022, and the Israelis had nothing to do with any of them. But if they are pissing off Hezbullah to that extent, that’s a good sign, it indicates that UNIFIL are taking effective measures to reduce the destabilizing influence in the area.

What seems to be happening at present is that the government of Lebonnan is striking a deal with Isreal that will get rid of Hezbollah. Hezbollah is significantly weakened. With Assad gone in Syria and Iran under attack from the US and Israel, Hezbollah already weakened by the pager attack about a year ago the Lebonese government isbseeing this as an opportunity to remove Hezbollah as a destablising force within the state. It seems it has struck a truce with Israel and is allowing Israel to continue attacking Hezbollah. Hezbollah in return is trying to prevent the truce holding

Israel and USA conspired to end the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon at the end of 2026. Israel clearly couldn't hide their glee and are killing a few peacekeepers before they leave. Israel will terrorise southern Lebanon when they are gone.

Sounds as though there could be another IDF investigation! There are people of influence in the US who will not be impressed by what they would regard as desecration.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday condemned an incident in which an Israeli soldier damaged a Jesus statue in southern Lebanon, stressing that the act runs counter to Israel’s values and will be investigated.

In a statement posted on X, Netanyahu said he was “stunned and saddened” by the incident, which he condemned “in the strongest terms.”

“Yesterday, like the overwhelming majority of Israelis, I was stunned and saddened to learn that an IDF soldier damaged a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon. I condemn the act in the strongest terms,” Netanyahu said.
