Just seen highlights of the game. Any details on the Irish 13? Looks a serious athlete for his age and lovely profile for the position. Threw some lovely passes too.

Ireland U19s team named to face France tomorrow, looks a strong selection:

On top of this, you would add Josh Neill & Lee Fitzpatrick, both of whom were starters for the Irish U20s in the U20 6 Nations, and probably Arthur Ashmore (injured) who has looked excellent too.

Good to see Blackrock College not holding their players back from playing under-age

Back row is crazily competitive - of the three guys there, that's essentially the U18 Schools back row from the South Africa games last summer, so not hugely surprising to me. Boyd is probably predominantly an 8, and Lautsou is a big prospect who was in the wider U20s squad.

It won't get an easier too, because Josh Neill is a locked-in starter when he returns to this team - he was probably the best player a year young on the U20s, and I think there's a strong argument for Arthur Ashmore - who has been excellent for Terenure in 1A of the AIL all season, to muscle his way in there too.

Boyd is still in’s school so can’t be chosen for the u20, but he won player of the tournament during last Easter’s u18 matches

only time i saw Boyd and Lautsau on the pitch at the same time was against south africa and Lautsau looked comfortably the better player, much more aggressive and much higher work rate. A lot can change in a few years though so who knows who'll start next year.

A fairly rotated U18s team beat Spain 38-17 yesterday. Try scorers were James Whitty, Dara Walsh (2), Rian MacFarlane O'Shea (2) and Alex Moloney. Paddy Scally (Ciaran Scally's son) kicked 4 conversions.

In a big result - the U19s beat France today - 39-29. Haven't seen a match report on that game yet though.

according to Reddit the u19s beat France 39-29 today with 3 backrowers scoring tries (Roger’s/Boyd/Lautsou) and Geoff O’Sullivan scoring two.

im sure the coaches will find away to include both Boyd & Lautsou.

France were an u20's development side, not sure if that made them a weaker or stronger opposition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 361 ✭✭big-al

think that’s what they call their u19 side.

Ireland u19 missing a few to the u20 squad, notably Fitzpatrick at hooker and Nathan Noble (hooker) also missing due to Christian-aid work in Africa.

He's a big lad, I noticed Inst were using him as a first receiver at scrums in the Schools Cup Final. How fast is he though?

As far as the Ulster players are concerned McVicker has a very big rep, so I'll be watching his progress with great interest over the next year or so and Tom Bell has consistently been in the Irish age group sides over the last couple of years so must be decent, I haven't seen him play though.

At U19 level it's funny, some of the players have a year of AIL behind them, for example Jon Rodgers has been playing 1A for Hinch or 1B in the case of Owen O'Kane at Armagh, while others (most maybe) have been playing schools rugby. The U20s will be the great leveller I suppose. But it seems like this is a decent group, especially when you add in someone like Josh Neill who will be back next year for the 20s.

    Good win anyway over France.

Who would you pick as the top prospect from the U18 schools? 1 back and 1 forward!

Who would you pick as the top prospect from the U19 side? 1 back and 1 forward!

Great to see Spain involved in the U18, hope some day they will join an U20 rugby.

For me- from the U18 schools I think Alex Moloney - the PBC/Munster centre looks the best back prospect, and Michael Smyth - Terenure/Leinster openside flanker is the best forward prospect.

From the U19 side - my back selection would be Bernard White - Blackrock/Leinster centre and my forward would be Harry Goslin - Belvedere / Leinster THP.

That's excluding Josh Neill (the best actual prospect at this level) and Lee Fitzpatrick who aren't currently in this side, but started for the 20s in the 6 Nations.

    U19 side

I would pick Adam Boyd as the best forward, won u18 player of the tournament last spring, and Mcvicker as the best back (and also best player in general). He will play for Ulster quickly enough.

Ulster were the interpro schools champions at this level and both of them were the difference makers

    both are still in school.

if mcvicker was out of school he walks into the u20 team. He is a top tier prospect.

In the game against England the no.5 was impressive, Phil Lynch i think it is

Thank you, looking forward to keeping an eye on some of these players.

Great to see a spread of players also

We seem to have got to stage where we are beating England at all the under-age levels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

He's a scrum half. Does look an excellent prospect, but I wouldn't necessarily share the view he'd have "walked onto the U20s this year", as Chris Barrett is himself an excellent prospect and was one of the best players on that side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

We have beaten them this season at senior, U20 and U18 levels, though the latter two were relatively close run games.

It is crazy when you think of it - we simply shouldn't be as competitive at underage with them as we have been over the past decade or so given the vast disparity in playing resources.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 592 ✭✭✭mogwai81

Agreed, I thought Barrett was an excellent trail runner, sniper and although small impressed me with some of his defensive work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 361 ✭✭big-al

mcvicker is an outstanding prospect. Good chance he will play for Ulster in his first year out of school. Similar enough to Nathan Doak

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

I'm not disputing how good he is - I've never said otherwise, and have actually praised him on this forum on a couple of occasions in the past:

So dunno why you keep posting like I'm denying his talent or anything.

All I said was - the guy who actually played at 9 in the U20 6 Nations was also an excellent prospect who equally has scope to be playing senior rugby very soon.

Interesting nugget on the guy I’ve flagged here as the most promising back prospect from the U18s side, Alex Moloney:

He’s a first cousin of current Leinster academy back three player Ruben Moloney and his younger brother Derry Moloney, who played on the wing this year for the Irish U20s.

Ruben & Derry’s dad Rory came through PBC and UCC, played in a varsity match for Oxford v Cambridge and then went on to play for Old Wesley & Leinster in the 1990s.

There are talks being held to expand U20s, but it's tough because currently their fixtures are aligned with men's and some unions are making good deals to promote these games, so wouldn't like to touch much.

But hey, as a Spaniard I'm happy that we have been up to standard when invited to U18 Festival. We beat Scotland last year, then snatched Euros against Georgia and now we've beaten Wales.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭jimbob955

Ah that's ridiculous, how much money can Unions make off of U20 home games?? Soccer for example don't align U21 and Senior qualification games/ teams for example. Another reason to keep T2 teams out.

Havent heard much accurate information lately on the injuries to u20's players, a few promising players returning from injury but also a few new ones with doubts over Lee Fiztpatrick and Dylan McNiece and most worryingly Josh Neill. Whats the story with Symkovsky i read some where he came to ireland 4th year at blackrock which must put him close to the 5 year residency
