These started last year and became more regular since January and are broadcast “live” on YouTube and Instagram at lunchtimes on Tuesdays, Wednesday, and starting today, Fridays (they originally started on Saturdays but are no longer on that day). It has no fixed day or schedule (today’s episode was the first in 3+ weeks) which can’t one assume really help build an audience….but that’s for the producer and the host to figure out I guess.

The title is a little misleading as books are very much an add-on to the topics of the day, which invariably are just Ryan telling us what he’s been doing lately. Think of it as an audio version of his “London Diary” columns. On today’s show for example Ryan told of his trip to No. 10 and his pint poured by the British PM…..a story barely a week old but has been told many times already, and in the aforementioned column, and on his Instagram.

Other highlights included Ryan taking an unscheduled call from his mother live on air during the episode, a butchering of the author Jo Nesbo’s name, and Ryan muttering something which sounded like “Senior Hurling” before going live that’s captured on the YouTube recording.

On Nesbo, Ryan discussed the upcoming Harry Hole series on Netflix. As the show doesn’t air until March 26th he clearly has had a preview….old habits die hard indeed.

Ryan has not one but two “handlers” on the show though he’s mostly the only one on camera. Tom the cameraman and Aidan Power the producer. Ryan also let slip the pair have been busy recording other podcasts all morning for other people. Treats await!

The unprepared “riffing and raving” (his words) stream of consciousness flow of Ryan’s verbal output is only interrupted by guffawing, chatting to the two handlers, and the occasional moment where you feel like he’s completely forgotten what he’s just said and is struggling to remember where he was.

His delivery is in his trademark all over the place, 100mph output, whilst often failing to finish one sentence before moving on to the next.

After starting in January with just 3 and 4 viewers on YouTube (on different shows respectively) it’s testament to the quality of the show that today’s episode had 6 viewers when I joined (I was the 7th). Instagram has shown similar growth growing from the low teens in January to 15 today. Slow and steady indeed!

    I’m really enjoying them!

It's difficult to imagine how this is worth his time. Without a sponsor he's basically working for nothing. Would be interesting to find out the ownership structure behind this podcast. So he's recording it at a Noel Kelly studio with Noel’s staff. Is Noel Kelly paying Tubridy for presenting the podcast? It seems like an unusual setup.

it’s a great question. Almost all of the NKM stars’ podcasts are labelled as “NKM Productions”. The question I’d have is who owns the IP here, Noel or Ryan (and so on for the others) - certainly this seems to indicate it’s Noel. It seems a very unusual arrangement.

Is the tail wagging the dog so to speak?

I didn't see his live broadcast yesterday but I saw a clip where his mum called him during it. He answered the call. Actually made for really good content and was a heartwarming moment. Seems to have generated a lot of debate online. Some people saying that he shouldn't have answered it and other people loving it.

It’s great that such a great debate can be had between 22 viewers! It “even” made it online, in a totally not submitted by his agency press release:

    https://www.rsvplive.ie/news/celebs/ryan-tubridy-shares-sweet-hilarious-36903275

The pint at No. 10 story also gets a mention again even though it was almost 2 weeks ago at this stage. This will become the new “mugged by God in a hoodie” go to story I feel.

It was top tier live banter though, and needless to say Ryan had the last laugh! I look forward to reading about it again and in even more detail in tomorrow’s London Diary!

Probably was one of those moments that you had to be watching live to feel its full impact. Just shows how relaxed he is at the moment and his ability to create a sense of family around his podcast. He was amazing on the Full Irish when he first started out. He needs to go back to being like that again.

You raise an interesting point/question. What you saw as relaxed I saw as hyper….but perhaps hyper is his default relaxed setting?

Fans of The Toyman are in for a treat today! Ryan starts this morning on onic from Ireland from 11-1 and then by magic will be from London from 1-4. A real treat from The Toyman today; the lighter/banter side in the morning then down to much more serious matters in the afternoon. I’m looking forward to the new radio show where I hope to learn more about Joe Biden’s second presidential term as previously exclusively revealed by self- proclaimed political anorak Ryan!

The Toyman is LIVE now on Instagram and YouTube with another Bookshelf Live podcast which from the running order sees very little by way of books being discussed.

I do feel the sporadic nature of the scheduling of these doesn’t help listenership. Likewise announcing it’s going live at 1pm today earlier and mid-morning on Instagram isn’t going to help drive those numbers. I’m having lunch right now and simply can’t listen/watch today but I’ll try and catch up later.

I tuned in briefly to see the audience numbers….a whopping 3 viewers (including me). Usual fare, Ryan talking about himself mixed in with some humble-bragging and name dropping.

Looking forward to reading his book recommendation of Yesteryear. Isn't on general release yet but looks like it's going to be a smash hit. Could be the biggest selling book in a long time and seems that there's already a Hollywood movie in the pipeline. He has called for men to read it in order to call out the Trad Wife movement and the manosphere.

The Toyman seems to forget his past comments about women having check marks on their derrières denoting their sexual prowess in the bedroom as he seeks to reinvent himself (yet again) as a crusader against toxic maxillary……intriguing.

This latest turn seems rather calculated and performative, again nothing new there in the maze of manufactured personas the man seems to conjure up depending on that point of the axes of opportunism and desperation he finds himself at. Intriguingly he’s been promoting female authors in the main of late, just a coincidence I’m sure…..

Delighted to see he’s keeping up his long-established habit of accumulating freebies however - the advance copy of Yesteryear being the latest in the collection. He must get quite a shock when he actually has to pay for something.

I wouldn't be so cynical about his motivation for being an advocate for women's rights. He called out Andrew Tate and the manosphere again yesterday. Seems to be a very important topic for him at the moment, probably because of his family. The bulk of his fan base are women so I'm sure that his activism would mean a lot to them.

3 people watching......jez, that is embarrassing for him.

Maybe it's just time to pack it in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,135 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

Or it could be (and far more likely in my opinion) that he’s playing to the gallery. This position is certainly at odds with his statements about visible sexual prowess markers on women.

It seems vet calculated and performative to me.

That was 3 including me, and I didn’t stay. The highest view count I’ve seen for one of the live broadcasts is 7 on YouTube, and from memory 13 on Instagram. And yet he still gets the freebies….

I don't know anything about those comments but he has been an advocate for women's rights for a long time on the Late Late Show and now on his podcast. The Manosphere has become a big factor in influencing young men in the last few years. He's trying to warn people about the toxic message of far right influencers and misinformation. Am really enjoying his podcast and hopefully the new series of interviews will begin shortly. Am attending his Bookshelf Live Show in the Cork Opera House.

I think you’d be shocked and very disappointed in him as a man were you exposed to them. He’d be cancelled were he to air them today. Quite how he got away with it at the time remains a mystery…….you should be able to find it on Google but if you can let me know and I’ll post a link to it.

The podcast seems to be yet another vehicle for him to promote his theatre shows/tour, and to retell the stories he’s recently told in the London Diary and elsewhere…..as well as engage in his usual name dropping and humble-bragging.

If you just listed those quotes I would have said it was Alan Partridge who said them 😆

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,727 ✭✭✭hawley

To be honest I'm surprised at those comments. I can understand that he wanted a certain quality but they were a bit much. He has been courageous in calling out the Manosphere on the podcast. Am sure that he would take responsibility for what he was responsible for in making those remarks.

You wouldn’t be the first (and you won’t be the last) person to compare The Toyman to Partridge. It’s life imitating art at this stage.

In light of your discovery of his objectifying comments will you be considering boycotting attendance of the Cork gig?

He trying to warn people about toxic masculinity?

All 3 that are listening to him? Yeah, that'll change the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,135 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

That’s very harsh. That’s just YouTube. The live pods also go out on Instagram where he had a high of 13 viewers for one broadcast. I’d assume his audience is largely female so it’s perfect targeting as these women can teach men to be better. It’s a very clever play by The Toyman.

The numbers may be low but as the Tesco tagline says “every little helps”. Maybe Noel could get Tesco on board as a sponsor?

Yes I would consider it but would you consider that he might be a changed man? It was a long time ago. His activism for feminist causes in the last few years and has highlighted a lot of female authors on his podcast. I will ask him a question about those comments at the Bookshelf Live concert in the Opera House. Seems like he has been done a favour. He wouldn’t have the podcast or the other side gigs if he was still in RTE

Unfortunately you don’t get to ask difficult or awkward questions at the live events.

You have to scan a QR code to submit a question and these are then screened backstage as it were before a handful are carefully selected to be displayed on screen for The Toyman to answer. There are no questions from the floor or verbal exchanges with audience members so to speak so there would be a better chance of Tubs revealing he’s a big fan of Trump’s than answering a question like yours. You could resell your ticket so you wouldn’t be out of pocket and perhaps donate the money to a women’s refuge or another worthy cause in light of his comments - just a suggestion of course, I’m by no means telling you what to do.

The notoriously comment-averse (and fan of censoring comments) Toyman’s ad for his upcoming Gaeity gig on the MCD Instagram page has some “ne’er do wells” making references to his demise in RTÉ…..naughty lads and lassies!

I’m not on instagram myself but I was helpfully sent some screenshots by someone who is. They made for an amusing gander as I sipped on my morning coffee! The Toyman seems to be putting in more effort promoting these shows than he ever did for his RTÉ radio shows, it must be quite a shock to the system for him.

    Well, well, well!

I’d assume MCD got a call from a certain talent management agency because it seems that almost all of those amusing comments have been removed now. The flip flops image remains however…..🤣

Latest bookshelf live guests announced, and it’s the Brennan brothers of hotel, RTÉ, and Dunnes Stores signature collection “fame”. Across 4 live shows in 4 cities there will now be 5 guests, and all of them are male. For a champion of women and female authors, an advocate for women’s rights, and a man who talked about toxic masculinity recently this is, shall we say…… “intriguing”.

Thanks, hadn't seen this. Am glad that I have my tickets secured now. You can understand why he'd have Francis and John there. They spoke up for him when he was unfairly scapegoated by RTE. Wonder if he's going to upload the live shows to YouTube.
