gotta agree with 15, think it best masters shot i've ever seen. the sheer pressure and talk if it got wet, how could he come back from that.

the amazon doc was decent alright, an easy watch. i forgot how shocking his putting was on sunday. when the pressure on, he pulls left. even the winning putt in playoff nearly missed left!

J*sus, I'm stressed again just thinking about that round. Almost as bad as watching Cork hurlers! To follow what was probably the worst shot I've ever seen a pro hit (Jean Van Der Velde, honourable mention) on the 13th with that shot on the 15th. Ridiculous to the sublime…. He really is heart attack inducing box-office.

If it's not to be a paddy then one of the brits: Justin, Tommy or Rob Mac.

3 rounds of 70 probably gets it done?

If ANGC maintain these conditions then absolutely that'll win it.

With the forecast for continued good weather, the course will be treacherous by Sunday. I reckon -10 wins this so I agree that three 70s gets it done.

That said, I hope that Rory doesn’t get defensive as that is where he trips himself up.

I wouldnt be worried about the defensive golf. He's got nothing to defend unless he's in the lead come Sunday afternoon.

Lowry put it well in a pre masters interview. Paraphrasing but the jist is you just have to accept you'll hit plenty of very decent shots and get absolutely brutalised by the slopes and run offs. Leads to bogeys or worse that you just don't get elsewhere. Doesn't matter if you're a ten year veteran at Augusta, it's going to happen.

Collecting yourself mentally and moving on to make hay at the next opportunity is key. Lowry could easily have gone into club snapping mode yesterday blowing a fast start. Green side on the 4th with a putter and walks off with a double.

Rory looks about as comfortable as you could imagine after burying all the past trauma. Easy to say now that he's leading but you really have to fancy him to do the business.

Interesting to hear Couples say Rory could win a bunch of Masters over the next few years. I backed him myself this week with the same thoughts in my mind. Like, once the 2011 meltdown and the years of doubts and questions are forgotten thanks to last year's win, you start to remember that we are looking at a golf course that seems almost made for McIlroy - the power, the height, the talent, combined with the now years of experience, the drastically improved short game, the newfound Seve like recovery shots he's able to hit (based on the last two rnds hes played at Augusta alone) and youve got the potential for at least one runaway win over the next 3 to 5 years. Why not this week?

His short game and bunker play has for me always been overlooked or underappreciated. He's got a variety of shots in his arsenal. If he's not absolutely off the planet or in the water I think he's relatively comfortable in relying on his short game.

His wedge play/shots from inside 150 we're a real weakness for quite some time, very unpredictable for length and missing target by miles at times, he's fixed that and thats massive. He's always had great skill, imagination.

100% it's been a huge improvement in last few years. He looked like he had a sledgehammer in his hands at times. Now you expect him to be attacking pins.

This is an outrageous round by Rory.

He looks so free out there, all the pressure is off him. It's hard to see him not winning this now. His only target from Monday will be an attempt at the grand slam. If he gets the PGA championship I'd fancy his chances.

    Just decimated the field today

Biggest 36 hole lead ever. Some unreal golf, especially considering the erratic driving

91 man field and the 91st in driving accuracy is 91st in the field.

    90th in driving accuracy Rory…

    Some performance so far.

11.5 is the average winning score in the last 20. Dustin Johnson achieving a mins 20 in 2020.

"The defending champion will start his third round with a six shot lead". Dreamland stuff for Rory.

There is a bit of the Scottie Sheffler about the way he is playing the course, taking his medicine from bad drives and making up for it with outstanding iron play and course management, it’s truly amazing to see him doing to the course what was expected 15 years ago.

That was free-wheeling Rory at his best yesterday. Hope he can keep it up! Just an exceptional golfer when he's playing like that. A generational talent.

This has got to be the aim now. Break into this list. If he closes this one out, and I have no doubt that he will, then 10 majors needs to the target. At least get to 7 and ahead of the insufferable 'Sir Nick'.

"Sir Nick" will be gutted if Rory joins his small "back-to-back" group. Will enjoy listening to him if he's on tomorrow.

That must be the greatest round ever played at Augusta. Tiger in his pomp maybe, but Rory's ability to recover from an errant drive or get up-and-down from the bunker was just insane.

He's absolutely freewheeling and even if the pressure comes on tomorrow, all he's really looking to achieve is back-to-back. Yes it'd be great but nothing like the pressure of last year.

    backed Rory aswell

    For one simple reason.. Freedom

Has the Masters, Career Grand Slam in the bag, so no pressure or expectations.

I believe he could have several Masters and could have 2/3 majors this year.

As Mel Gibson said to Jaoquin Phoenix in Signs.. swing away Merrill..( Rory )

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

If he beats that COVID masters scoring record then it's the greatest Masters tournament performance by a country mile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,804 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

Wouldn't be getting too carried yet or talking about greatest performance ever. He's not playing anywhere near his best.

Been very poor off the tee, it's amazing he has the score he has but he cannot rely on his short game to keep bailing him out.

He was 4 shots clear with 5 to play last year and still ended in a playoff. Wouldn't be surprised if it goes down to the wire.

On a normal course 6 shots can often be made up but on this course huge swings in scoring can happen on numerous holes.

We have seen everything from 3 to 9 on the 15th and their are plenty more holes that a big score can be ran up.

It’s far from over but never seen Rory so under control even after some poor shots.
