thanks. I’ve Maze Hill station as my recommended stop. Doesn’t bother sitting around for a few minutes after it stops. More just a scrum to get on where people are like this is only train for a hour when another one 5 minutes later. I’m a more relaxed person before a marathon and even more so when I won’t be trying for a PB and just enjoy it and learn for next year

I have to go via Blackheath . Wave 3 so start time 9:44

Later than usual start times for London. Hope its not too hot.

First time doing London for me. Training been so/so - not as much volume as Id have liked for various reasons. It is also hard to get out and train in the winter months I find. Hopefully not too many hills too - I heard it is relatively flat though.

Public transport in London the day of the marathon is second to none. Google Maps works a treat over there so you'll have no hassle navigating your way around with up to date bus and train timetables. Transport is also free the day of the marathon for runners

I thought the start times is the same as other years but open to correction

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,535 ✭✭✭Naked Lepper

just seems later. dublin starts at 8.45 for example.. barcelona 8.30

London waves are split across 9:30-11:30. i was near the front of wave 2 last year and my watch says i crossed the line at 9:40 on the nose.

    Pink area

Arrival time at the Start: 08:15

    Wave Start time: 09:36

Any advice what time do I need to drop my bag off by? It says wave opens 10 minutes before the start time. It looks pink area first km is tight going by Google maps. Doesn’t bother me as I’ll be starting at the back of wave as about 10 minutes off pb shape so should be perfect to start at the back of it than front half in with the scrum

I'm pretty sure I was in the pink wave last year. I dropped my bag off around 25 minutes before the start. It's such a quick process. Took no more than 15 seconds.

You'll be in a bigger, general corral initially, where the bag drops are. They'll call all the pink runners into a smaller pen, 10 or 15 minutes before ye start.

Thanks. I was thinking maybe an hour or so. Sure 30 minutes feel like 10-15 as you take your final unnecessary relief stop. Then stroll around preparing yourself for entering the wave. I’m just thankful I’m out wave 1 then some starting after 11pm

I was that wave and start last year. The baggage trucks are at the top of the field and the corral is at the bottom, maybe 2-300m away, it’s that simple. And a bunch of urinals in between, if you’re of the male persuasion :)

Forecast for Sunday is looking promising, no rain and barely any wind. Temps climbing to 15 over the course of the morning so maybe a little bit warmer than optimal, but hopefully not too much.

We can’t complain about that temperature for late April for running. Could be easily 20+ for London. Just a few phantom niggles and a little tight knee but in for my sports massage tomorrow to get everything loosen out. Intervals tomorrow and a shake out on Friday afternoon/evening over there is just my only runs left. Fly out Friday morning into London city airport and hit the expo as around the corner

Oh agree with not complaining about the temperature - i did it in 2018 😄 i gather last year it was into the 20s also

Few MP miles earlier today and now its just a couple of short easy runs before Sunday. Looking forward to the big day

Just got the inevitable warm weather warning email! iPhone forecast doesn’t seem that bad but accuweather does have it touching 20c.

They had fire hydrants open along the course last year. It was wonderful to run through the spray every few kms, but a couple of warnings:

    1. My race number ripped at the safety pins as the number was so wet from the water. I'd recommend making sure that if you're using safety pins, dont try to go too close to the corners
    2. It's the only marathon I've ever run, where I lost a toenail. I blame my shoes from getting too wet. Not sure what you can do, expect maybe be careful not to run through every puddle :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,120 ✭✭✭Trampas

I finished Valencia with my number in my hand as it was ripping everywhere. Then I was worried if chip be broken. I’m using magnets for first time but will use pins also.

It’s creeping up over last few days. It’s all about finding the right effort for me and switch on cruise control. I’ll just start at the back of the wave and avoid the scrum as pink wave start looks tight

Best of luck to you all folks

    Looking forward to it now.

I'm probably going to head towards Waxy's Little Sister to watch the Mayo v Roscommon match and 4pm and then stay on for the Sunday Game if anyone is at a loose end.

It’s a well run system picking up the number. I was impressed how quick it was

Yeah, London weather is a different feeling then Irish weather when its warm with low winds and urban heat.

Extra cautious to be drinking water etc.

    Good luck!

3:05:31 for me. Support was amazing on route. Never come across such support in any race I’ve done. Apart from run tunnels you’d do well to run 5 seconds without someone on the side of the road. Never mind a lot of locations several deep in places.

Can’t complain. Thought maybe 3:05-3:10 based on my build up to it. I plan to be back next year to give it ago again. Get that sub 3 in London and be done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,882 ✭✭✭rizzee

3:02:33 big pb. Fantastically organised race and super support. Really enjoyed that (bar the weather!! :-) ) It’s Dublin next for the sub 3 crack.

Well done and enjoy the rest of your trip :-)

2:50:32 for me which was around my B goal so not dissatisfied. I wore the Puma Fast R3s having only done 5k in them previously which was a mistake - bad blisters developed on soles of both feet early on, and around 17 miles felt both pop 😝made for a very painful last hour or so. Bit of cramp thrown in there too with a few stops late on to try and stretch it out.

Otherwise a fantastic experience as London always is, beautiful day and the support is just incredible. it can be hard at times not to let the noise inadvertently speed you up. Organisation was top notch, and i guess we'll always be able to say we were part of the first official sub 2 hour marathon. Bonus for me was a brief appearence on the tv coverage while crossing tower bridge 😄

    2:45:35 for me.

Was hoping to be a bit closer to sub 2:40 but if I’m honest, I was hanging on for dear life from fairly early on so I’ll take it and move on.

Conditions were a killer - heat crept up and it just sapped the legs. Went out at the planned pace but it felt harder than it should have even inside the first 10k. Tried to stay disciplined but London crowds are dangerous… very easy get carried away and pay for it later (which I absolutely did).

Around halfway I knew it was going to be a long day. Pace started slipping and by the last 10k it turned into a proper grind. Had a few moments where I nearly pulled the pin / walked but managed to keep shuffling and get it done. One of those where the head does more work than the legs.

Positives - stuck it out, didn’t completely implode, and still came home with a solid time considering how it felt out there.

London itself… unreal as always. Support is next level - wall of noise nearly the whole way. Definitely carried me through a few rough patches when things were starting to go south.

All in all — tough one, bit messy, but job done.

Next stop: figure out how to crack that sub 2:40 properly.

    Brilliant running everyone

London in 2027 is set to be split over 2 days. Supposedly women on Saturday and Men on Sunday, which is madness imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,120 ✭✭✭Trampas

All men and all or just elites and championship entries?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,773 ✭✭✭sk8board

they start the press release with ‘for one year only’, which makes you wonder why do it.

My personal view, having run London, is that it’s a special race, easily the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen, and I think it will reduce that ‘specialness’.

    Finding volunteers for two days?

If you’re running on Sunday, you have a massive marathon happening in the city the day you’re looking to chill, or Looking to eat somewhere when the city restaurants or your hotel are full of people celebrating their big day.

From what I've read, the split is only for people who qualify

So on Saturday, it's elite women, gfa women, etc.

On Sunday, it's elite men, gfa age men, etc

On both days, those who have been selected by the ballot, entered via charities or tour groups will be across both days, without any separation by gender
