Yes but I'm not suggesting he is the next Liverpool manager, I'm suggesting if they wanted an interim until the summer he'd be the obvious solution.

He's plenty of experience and all he needs to do is change the atmosphere in the dressing room and around the club. Bring some intensity to our play.

    Who else fits the bill?

A mess that's higher than us on the league table and looking secure for next seasons CL.

I don't want Stevie but I'm not against appointing a former player on an interim basis. Heck Spearing would do, at least he'd point them in the right direction.

I am not sure anyone can come in and save the season really. The squad isn’t strong enough.

We should have signed some players in the winter.

If you want an ex-liverpool player currently managing, then the choice is not good. It's Alonso or none of the above if that's the metric. Gerrard is a straight no. I mentioned his poor Villa record but forgot about his record in Saudi which was very similar in PPG as his Villa record.

So far we have Robbie Keane, Rob Page, Giovanni Von Bronckhorst and Jay Spearing ahead of Stevie G with some posters!

    **** me!

From Reddit: Video of the Away fans leaving the stadium singing Alonso's song. If the away fans have turned, hopefully the powers that be feel the pressure to make a change.

They're used to it happening in their profession.

It would literally be Gerrard life ambition at this point to manage Liverpool, he is not going to give it up easy, I don't expect he would be taking the job without some chance of staying at the helm. Someone who is already at the club or has done it before is nearly always the choice for a caretaker. We're talking about perhaps 10 games max.

One name I haven't seen floated yet, but could probably do the job for 10 games, King Kenny!

I wouldn't stop at Slot when it comes to it either. Richard Hughes has been negligent in how he's set about reshaping this team.

In hindsight, the contract extension that Salah signed has been a terrible mistake. It's hamstrung us from securing his replacement and left us carrying a burden all season.

In a period when the Premier League has become more physical and direct, we went the opposite direction. Left ourselves short defensively and changed too much too fast.

Was listening to the match on 5 live as I was driving, they had an interesting stat.

For high intensity moments in the opposition half, Liverpool are 19th in the league.

For high intensity moments in the middle third, Liverpool are the worst team in the league.

I am unclear what exactly they define as a high intensity moment, but this turgid, pedestrian style is killing us.

All we need is someone to come in and win a few games to finish 5th, that's it. Then we bring in a permanent manager in the summer

What players has Hughes signed that we are happy to write off already? I'd be fairly confident all of them will be here for a good few years and do well here.

If Salah wasn't renewed after the season he had and on top of losing TAA there'd have been uproar from the fan base. Renewing was the right decision at the time.

This is all probably moot because they are unlikely to do anything before the summer, unfortunately.

I think I've been as patient as anyone with Slot but today is an endgame performance for a manager. How they react to adversity is a real indication of the players believe in the coaching. They knew the game was up as soon as they went behind.

If it's Alonso, I doubt he wants to step into the firing line before the summer. So I think we'll limp on but there is no way back from here for Slot and his team.

    Ah Jesus, not Gerrard.

If we’re looking for someone to inspire these lads to a CL finish, it’s not the standout example of a manager underperforming with a PL squad. His tactics and man management were awful at Villa. Emery practically turned that team around overnight. Can’t imagine our team particularly care that he’s a club legend either.

And the fact that Gerrard so obviously wants the gig full time adds another potential wrinkle into the mix.

I think we can do better at left back and at right back. Wirtz is a fantastic player but we've had to rip up everything that was good about the team for the last few years to try and accommodate him. The Isak signing has been an unmitigated disaster.

We're short a defensive midfielder and 2 wide players also. Diaz wasn't suitably replaced. Just imagine we'd used the Isak money in the summer to grab Guehi and Semenyo, two very gettable players.

My Robbie Keane suggestion was a joke ffs 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 893 ✭✭✭FernandoTorres

Fans singing Alonso's name while leaving, Szob having a go at whatever away fans were left at the end and Ekitike swapping shirts in the middle of the game. Hard to see any way back from this for Slot.

I suggested him a few weeks ago. 3rd time lucky.

Roy Hodgson would have been the obvious choice but he recently took the Bristol City job.

Today it's "City over performed their xG by a mile."

Whether that's an excuse or part of his endless stream of observations I don't know.

It was probably our only chance at winning a trophy and gave Slot an opportunity for salvaging something, Man City was going to be the hardest game in the FA cup, and we had no fight and lose 4-0. If he can't fight for that game, he's gonna have no fight for the rest of the season.

I'd say Alonso would be happy enough to come in and get 5th. Also new manager bounce would give us a small chance for doing something in the CL imo. It would be a hero's welcome for him tbh. Summer is a long time, and the start of next season would be hanging over his head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 421 ✭✭CajunSurprise

There was reports awhile back that Alonso’s exit package from Real Madrid prevented him managing another team this season. That’s why all the stories about him are he’s ready to come back at the start of the summer for whoever he ends up with.

And you have Stevie G ahead why? I put Belamy as interm first. That is if they could not get Alonso in sooner if he is becoming our new manager

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭Appletart Upsetter

Usually the criteria for interim manager is someone with a strong connection to the club or currently on the coaching staff.

Is there any manager out there with a stronger connection to Liverpool than Gerrard?

Bellamy would be a good shout to be fair but he's currently employed by Wales and his connection to the club is tenuous really.

Personally, I wouldn't let Gerrard anywhere near it - neither interim nor full-time. They guy is untested at the top level. Also, we need to put the sentimentality b0ll0cks aside too. Needs to be someone from outside.

Bellamy's connection to the club is tenuous? I suppose his connection with Riise at the Craig Bellamy School of Golf was tenuous too?

No,not saying that at all. Hea done on on a malfunctioning team, but he's not been great either, and has developed a habit of giving away silly fouls.

The policy of not giving long term, expensive contracts to older players was largely poo pooed here last year though, but the policy has been largely proven correct given the fall off in mo in particular, but in Virgil as well

Yes people love him but that's as far as it goes we also need a manager to at least try and make sure we get CL and given his managerial experience i don't see that happening

Yes Belamy would be a no unless Wales FA let him manage up to the summer given there out of World Cup but that will not happen either.
