Voice tracking isn’t the issue. Weak execution is.

Pre-recorded content works everywhere else. No one questions The Joe Rogan Experience or The Diary Of A CEO because they’re not live. They work because they’re intentional. Clear structure. Strong personality. Defined purpose

On the PD point. If presenters aren’t being air-checked regularly, drift happens. Crutches creep in. Energy drops. Safe replaces compelling. Monthly checks at minimum. Specific feedback, not vague praise. Who is the APD to Dan Healy or ops manager?

You may but are they fulfilling a public service?

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Could they ever go (or be allowed to go) advert free? There doesn't seem to be that many adverts, compared to the likes of Today FM, so could be a minimal loss.

Id say having uninterrupted shows may give them a huge advantage.

Often listen to BBC Radio 1 because I know I'm not getting hit with adverts after 3 songs and a competition for a 20euro Just Eat voucher.

I am going to ask my TD to put down a PQ to the Minister as follows:

..to ask Minister O Donovan how much 2FM is costing the state?

..surely in view of the fact that 2FM had it worst book ever last week what is to stop

RTÉ giving the nation the music they love by swooping RTÉ Gold with 2FM. I bet it would have a 10% audience in 12 months if Gold was on FM and DAB

You think you'll get the ball rolling in abolishing the television licence fee by getting Radio Telefís Éireann to abandon 21st century music? You think Irish tax payers want their audio entertainment to be entirely at a billionaires whim payed for by a dangerous additive lottery? You think that over one hundred thousand listeners are worth nothing to Ireland? Why isn't BBC Radio 1 under pressure?

2fm offers a choice. And while less listeners are choosing 2fm right now, that's better than no choice at all. Giving up is incredibly short sightedness and the tax payers are not getting value from a company that says the 20th century way worked, lets stick with it forever.

    This too shall pass.

They don't have as many ads as the commerical sector, I think they can only have 6mins on average and a max of 9mins on RTÉ Radio, Commerical channels have 9 ave to max 12mins, commerical TV has 12mins per hour.

But you could argue that RTÉ are a failed public service broadcaster, that have over invested in 2FM over the last 15 years with no sign of it returning to profitably or a breakeven point. Surely at the very least they should reduce the costs at 2FM something that they have failed to do over the last 15 years, yet they have cut in other areas.

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

It is in their annual report, I believe it cost €10 - 12 m while Lyric costs about €6 - 7m, Gold is nowhere near either of those figures.

They're not perfect, but perfection is impossible. Again, BBC Radio 1 has never turned a profit, but public service broadcasting shouldn't be dictated by profits. I reckon no capatilist country has a perfect tax system.

Show me your ideal model of Public Service Broadcasting in a capatilist country. Who in the world has got it spot on?

    This too shall pass.

No offence to you but that sounds very like a Moya Doherty thing to say "They are not perfect".

I'd argue that you don't have to look a BBC Radio 1 as an example, but to Lyric FM and RnaG, neither have made a profit, RnaG is much like the BBC with no commerical funding (save for the PSA announcements in recent years). I can understand the cost of RnaG as it is largely a regional and talk service rather than a music one.

In reality GOLD is exactly what you are suggesting, but I agree I think there needs to be a youth service from RTÉ, but its clearly not working.

I think blaming the model for the problems of RTÉ is simple turning around and agreeing they have "existentially crisis" while failing to look at the services they are providing and which they have ultimate control over.

RTÉ 2FM was set up to be as cost neutral service to RTÉ and, IMO, with the hope it might also provide some extra funding to public service broadcasts on other RTÉ services. (Though I think it only ever broke-even).

2FM never took much of a cut, RTÉ simple pumped money into them from the license fee since 2011. Meantime its audience has depleted and lyrics has increased. And RTÉ cut in other areas.

BBC Radio 1 = 1% of total BBC budget

RTÉ 2FM = 3% of total RTÉ budget.

Though as RTÉ say you shouldn't compare them to the BBC.

I like how this thread is under 2 years old, the schedule is nearly entirely different to when it was created, and yet the title is basically constantly valid

Can't beat some spontaneous chat and infectious energy:

Patricia Monahan, said: "This new and fresh 2FM schedule is a central part of our ongoing focus on delivering more to audiences as we continue to implement RTÉ's audio strategy.

"Connecting with and entertaining younger audiences across Ireland, with spontaneous chat, infectious energy, and great music, including the Irish artists they love are central to what 2FM is about.

    Strange move TBH

    Tracy Clifford is gone

Breakfast ads an extra hour 6 - 10

Garrihy goes to the talk slot 10 - 12

Followed by a show from Cork but also from Dublin checking the regional box but very clearly just checking it. 12 to 3

With Laura and Katja going to Drive at 3 (when did drive become 3pm?) 3 to 6

6PM with Beta (and to be honest the probably the best of this line up) from 6

Is Katja leaving Virgin Media TV?

So torture everyone in the morning for another hour. How will they fill 4 hours of trying to be funny.

So it’s Garrihy I can’t make it for 9am or stay till 6pm because of crèche hours.

Can’t be seen putting back the box ticking exercise from drive to weekend again so let’s put them on lunchtime. One isn’t funny and other can’t read a text message without fumbling it.

Drive is now I can’t help but laugh at everything and Instagramer.

Are we making guesses on how long this lasts

Damn...Tracy was the last decent daytime show on the station.

Betas show is usually good...doesn't say how long it is tho, or maybe I missed it. Id love if it was 6-8, Jenny Greene 8-10 and give Dan Hegarty a decent run from 10-1, and have it live! One can only dream 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,336 ✭✭✭fitzparker

Tracey was the only decent thing on 2FM

Garrihy must have given her rules before returning (not starting till 10am)

    Beta is decent.

Id say Clifford will now go to weekends 12-3

2fm is dirt, but at least the music is a bit mixed, Today FM just sounds like you are at a poxy wedding 24/7 (mr. Brightside and Bruno Mars must be played 30 times a week)

I thought Laura Fox was good at 9.

Tracy was great, enjoyed her show. Don't think D&M deserved a perm slot over Tracy.

Carl Mullan,Garrihy, Demi Isaac etc wouldn't have gotten on air 20 years ago. Todays schedule is too female led with male sidekicks

This is Patricia Monahan's work, make no mistake about it. Once Radio 1's schedule was done 2FM was going to come next.

Thing is, when Garrihy left initially, she wasn't exactly inundated with offers while she was gone, and going back to 2FM had all the signs of "No one else would hire me," so how she had any negotiation power at all is beyond me. It reminds me a bit too much of Tubridy and the "We have to pay Ryan an enormous sum every year, otherwise he'd be off to the BBC," and we all know how that ended.

I'm guessing we'll have another revamp by August. But I'm sure that'll be one that works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,743 ✭✭✭RoTelly

My conspiracy theory is that she was advised to leave for a few months and that she would be back on once the expression of interest was issued. Much like Ray D'Arcy she's being pampered by RTÉ.

    Demotion for Laura Fox.

It's interesting that Lottie's career never took off and never will.

Dan Healy already has his excuses ready for the next 4 JNLR's sorted for when ratings are down. "We only launched a new schedule", "Not comparable as the show used to finish/end at xxx time"

If Jenny Greene or Dave Tracey are on the move then I imagine Tracey Clifford is the top name to take either place.

Dan really is a one trick pony isn’t he?

doing the same things over and over again but expecting different results each time.

Dave Traceys show is basically hours of soundalike tracks, the same every week; so any change there would be nice.
