    Hi all, I can see the sea in the distance from where i live, but it would be really cool to see in detail. Am i better off with binoculars or some kind of telescope or viewing scope? I can set it up on a tripod if that makes a difference - it doesnt need to be mobile. I just want to see things as sharply and as magnified as possible

    Hello.

    A spotting scope is likely your best option. Much more powerful magnification than binoculars. Binoculars are great if you're on the move but bigger binoculars with magnification of 15 times are very heavy.

    Scopes are designed to sit on tripods. You'll want one with a magnification range of maybe 20 to 50 times and a reasonably wide lens (60mm +) to give you a bright image. ( Very high magnification tends to get a bit blurry)

    There are lots of brands.

    I have the Hawke Endurance 25-75 ED in the list here;

    You can see there is a big price range.

    I think something around 400 to 500 euro is a good fit for a medium quality scope. You can pay less and you can pay thousands.

    Bresser do a great line in high quality, good value scopes, too.

    You'll need a reasonably heavy duty tripod so it doesn't shake.

    Best thing would be to visit a camera shop and try a few. You can always order one online after when you know what you like. But lots of the corner shops are just as good value and you have peace of mind of being able to ask advice.

    Enjoy.
