Has anyone ever gone to Carton House before if they have trained? Any opportunities for an autograph or are they completely unreachable for the few days

I'd imagine there would be something on one of the days for fans to attend but I haven't seen anything yet.

Much about nothing tbh. He's done very well since he came in so naturally he'll be in the conversation for the full time gig if we finish the season in similar fashion.

It feels like it has come down to Nagelsmaan, Enrique or Carrick - as if the club feel swapping from Carrick to Iriola, RDZ or similar doens't offer enough difference to make the change worth it.

And then it doesn't feel like Enrique or Nagelsman are gettable/interested - though how much ambition we have shown to get either is questionable.

Personally i am very unsure of Carrick; he has gotten the results but I don't like how he is setting us up, or how we are playing. I can be explained away with the player quality in several position, but i've also no reason to think this isn't simply how he wants us to play in general

If Carrick keeps us in 3rd I'd say he'll definitely get the full time job. The rumour mill is suggesting Enrique is going to stay at PSG and Nagelsmann isn't going to be available until after the WC. The likes of Iraola and Glasner are high-risk and they'll have seen what happened with Frank at Spurs.

Arguably all Big Michael has done is put players in their favoured positions, not bear grudges and not be Amorim. Hard to know if he can deal with higher expectations and 2 games a week, but I suspect we're going to find out.

Do you know where/when it would be posted if anything comes up?

Assuming we qualify for the CL, he'll have a big transfer budget to spend.

Wonder will he get full control or is some kind of commitee.

I don't think anyone has had "full control" since Fergie.

    no way he gets control.

He'll get input. The club will ultimately decide (and may or may not agree with him).

I think it will be similar to Amorim - everyone agreed the positions, everyone ultimately agreed the targets - but Amorim didn't get his specific choices: Martinez & Watkins vs Lammens and Sesko. I think there Lammens was likely far more of a club decision than Sesko, in terms of while Amorim might have preferred Watkins, he's wasn't against Sesko; I think he absolutely wanted PL proven martinez over Lammens though, which I also think was a fair opinion.

I'm still of the opinion we need a better more experienced coach but then I see how we went from Olé to ETH and I wonder...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,754 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

ETH surely had free reign on Antony and Onana.

I actually trust Carrick's opinion more.

I honestly think I'd do a better job signing players than the club has in the past.

In hindsight, the board were right on both. Martinez is having a decent season but Lammens has been very solid so far at a fraction of the price and 10 years younger.

Sesko's late season surge has him level for goals with Watkins and again, much younger and probably cheaper too given the English club tax.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49,304 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Yeah, I think the board got the calls right.

But also… the board call was originally for Delap over Gyokeres, then we missed on both and then they picked Sesko over Watkins, having also missed on Ekitike.

I've no issue with the club ultimatey deciding. My view is the manager should be hired with an understanding his general style fits the club. Then the manager can say I need players in X,Y,Z (and in our case A,B,C,D,E,F,G…) positions, and I would want the players bought to be able to do these things (overlap, underlap, be good at carrying or pass first profile requirements) and then the scouting team and recruitment go find the best players to fill those needs, within the budget and general guidelines of the club.

I find the idea that the manager should be head scout utterly insane. I don't understand why a manager would even want the responsibility of searching for and finding all the players, while also needing to actually manage the team he is in charge of.

Carrick isn't the most tactically astute of managers and I think he'll struggle in the Champions League. We've seen a real drop-off in intensity over the last 5-6 games and the quick, short passing we saw in the first 4 games is kind of non-existent now. I get that his name should be in the hat if we get 3rd but I don't think he's got the chops for the demands next season will bring, in addition to managing the transition of 5-6 players out and bedding in their replacements.

The major stumbling block is gonna be the lack of demonstrably "better" managers available and the fact that multiple teams in the PL alone either will be or could be on the hunt for a new manager.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,397 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

It is a huge factor. There are about 3 names who might be considered impossible to pass on, and United aren't getting any of them. (Guardiola, Klopp, Ancelotti).

After that it is just a bunch of people that are as likely to be the next Ten Hag or Amorim as they are to be a success.

For example I hear people suggest Nagelsmann. Why exactly is he the best choice? Because he won a title with Bayern? But he got sacked during the next season and has never worked in the PL, so its certainly not a sure thing…

Carrick currently has a 2.3 PPM, better than Arteta (Yes I know about sample size). Its not so long ago that we couldn't get above 1ppm. He has done as good a job as it probably was possible to do so far.

So if there is a demonstrably better man to put in place then we should do that. But I certainly can't see who that sure thing happens to be?

Confirmed. Bit mad if they go down having signed him on a big money deal.

Have to agree on Nagelsmann to be honest.

It's probably fair to say Kompany has done more at Bayern and I wouldn't want him near the club.

all roads lead to carrick it seems unless enrique somehow is open to the move. and i think thats were i am also - enrique or carrick.

there are a number of red flags with carrick though:

we've been poor the last ~5 games?

still persisting with a struggling mbuemo up top.

    no european experience.

It is ok to think that Carrick isn't the long term manager while also thinking he is grand for the here and now. We are still in a state of flux with the squad with up to 8 players leaving in the summer. If you were to throw a new manager into the mix as well and players coming back late after the world cup then it's not a great place to be. I think Carrick is low risk compared to to recent appointments. We need to build the squad depth with European football coming in some shape or form next season. Carrick in my opinion deserves the chance to lead us further down the path than we are now. He might not get the Club back to where it was but then we might need to stop looking in the rear view mirror. What we had is the Fergie days was something that is unlikely to ever be seen again.

Isn't that the day tinfoil hat wearer say gravity is going to disappear for 7 seconds?

If it happens when a corner is being taken then it'll be like an Arsenal game
