hi folks, bought a new house last year.. we have a logic combi 24ie gas boiler.. been giving trouble.. low pressure - then high - now a small leak.. fitting was v poor… was never serviced.. (an oversight on our behalf when buying the house)..

Anyway, its 8 years old - apparently life span is about 10 years?

The guy we have working on it reckons we should get a new boiler - what ye think? and if so, which one? He said the one we have it a piece of crap. We are not flush with cash so would like something economical but reliable.. thanks in advance

I’d suggest another opinion, there may be an expansion issue that could be easily solved. 8 years would be a very short lifespan.

Ideal is a budget boiler, but ok.
Viessmann or Bosch would be the leaders in gas boilers in my humble opinion.

ok - but it was never serviced

Shouldn’t be a reason that it needs to be dumped after 8 years.

Servicing a boiler is cheap when viewed on therms of efficency and long term cost. The problem is getting a qualified plumber.

Jumping on this thread, my Bosch is around 13 years old and looks like it's dying, luckily made it through the winter.

Was told it needed replacement last year but held out as not in position to replace it but might have to this year.

What sort of price to fit a new boiler for a 2 floor 2 bed terraced house in Dublin?

I think i was told 6k or something??

Does not matter too much for a gas boiler. It is more important for oil, where is can get clogged up.

"X years old", "inefficient", "unserviced" and "slight problem" are all dog whistles for some boiler engineers to arrive and automatically roll out the boiler replacement up-sell package ("I'll throw in the mag-filter for free, but the radiator flush is 600 Euros"). It's far more profitable for them to propose replacing the whole lot than doing actual troubleshooting.

I have a 23 year old Volkera gas boiler, serviced every second year, which was declared 'unservicable' (for lack of spare parts) back in 2015, and still working perfectly. I'm not saying that all boilers should last 23 years, but don't fall for the hype of the replacement package, especially if you already have a condensing boiler, and boiler technology hasn't moved on massively since.

As for mine - I've gone and cursed it now, haven't I?

Apparently switching to heat pumps is about same price as replacing gas boiler after seai grants

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,375 ✭✭✭Lenar3556

Shouldn’t be €6k unless there is major additional upgrade works. The boiler itself will be about €1k for something decent.

Anything over €3k to replace that would seem excessive.

A heat pump is a very different animal. In most cases a direct swop won’t be successful without significant building upgrades.

And unlikely to offer any running cost saving.

Had gas boiler serviced last month. Still giving us issues. Its about 14 years old. I asked plumber how much to get replaced and he quoted 2.7k

I recall that a Bord Gais engineer came out to inspect when I was getting the boiler serviced and explained that the pipe running under my house from the gas meter at the front to the boiler house in the rear was too small to provide sufficient gas to allow my boiler to run efficiently and suggested I would need to install new pipes to be within regulation.

I can't install anything under my floor as it is tiled so the new pipe would need to go through the attic or something like that.

In which case the move to heat pumps instead might be better. There is no requirement to install under floor heating with a heat pump as they can use existing radiators.

An undersized gas line would certainly add to the work, but it is worth assessing the position in detail, checking the length and looking at what boiler options will work with the existing pipework. Sometimes an installer will be too quick to rule out the existing when there may be options.

Heat pumps work well with radiators, but your existing radiators are probably too small. To account for the lower flow temperatures, you are looking at more than double the radiator size to get the same heat output.

Your domestic hot water system also needs to change, as the heat pump won’t be compatible with your existing cylinder.

You also have to consider your houses electrical supply, which wasn’t sized for a heat pump as new ones are, and may or may not be suitable - or might severely limit the possibility of a future electric car charger for example.

I wouldn’t rule it out, but there are a lot of variables and in most cases switching from gas to a heat pump is only viable in the context of a major building upgrade. (In which case your heat requirement would be so low that the existing 1/2” gas pipe would probably be loads!)

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

This and Weissmann as mentioned above are the two to go for.

Many plumbers mention Baxi- why? Because they’re used to servicing these sh1t boilers - had a Baxi before and every year a different part needed replacing. Reviews online are poor compared to the above two- HOWEVER- only get a plumber qualified in the installation of these boilers Bosch/Weissman boilers to install them - otherwise you’ll be left with a sho1te installation and ongoing problems

Cool all noted. I dont have a water cylinder though as i use a condensing boiler. Would i need to add a water cylinder if going for heat pumps?

you guys recommend a good handyman for the job? 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,375 ✭✭✭Lenar3556

You have a combi boiler possibly?
No heat pump can replicate this, you would need some form of hot water storage.

    thanks for all the posts…

got a 2nd opinion - lovely man and v reputable… boiler just needs service badly - not replacing…

no more aggressive plumbers for me (not sure i mentioned how aggressive the other guy was/is - bitching about the shoddy work and the poor quality of boiler… meant to be good at his job but omg - the aggression issues)

you clearly don’t work in the field. 3k for a boiler change is what cowboys charge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,375 ✭✭✭Lenar3556

Rather than make foolish comments, your point might be better understood if you explained some of the variables that impact on the cost of boiler replacements, and the things to look out for between quotations.

But I can tell you for straightforward gas boiler replacements, there are many firms who will happily undertake work at this price point (and below) Some of it is to a very high standard.
