Electric Bike Storage

    Hi all,

Bit of a practical question for those with electric bikes.

Where do you store yours at home?

I’m thinking of getting one, but indoor storage isn’t really an option (space is tight and my other half isn’t too keen on the idea of in the house), so I’m trying to figure out what people do in reality.

Do you keep it in a shed – if so, timber or steel?
How secure do you find it?

    Cheers

I only had a light metal shed but it was a heifer of an e-bike (early generation) and I lock it to another bike in there, to make it as awkward as possible. Also bring the battery into the house.

Mine stays in the wooden shed out the back when it's not in use. It's as secure as it can be I suppose, if someone wants to get in they will. Block the shed windows so no one can see in, lock the bike and hope for the best. We have a Ring outdoor contact sensor on our shed as part of a Ring security system so we'll get a bit of notice if someone opens the door anyway.

I had a fold-up ebike, I kept it locked under a soft cover inside the 10ft high back wall of my garden - only visible to one neighbouring house - and then some feckers came over that 10ft high wall and took the bike back out over it - made no attempt at the house or anything else, so they came for the bike and they got it. I doubt it was the neighbours, so I'm guessing people are checking out back garden spaces with drones or something? Anyway, they clearly knew it was there and came in for it.

So before I replaced it, I got a wooden shed built in the corner of the garden - the back of it is the wall between me and the (other) neighbours. There's a bolt and heavy padlock on the door, and I got the fella to fit a bar to the back wall (I think it's a disabled shower grab rail) and I lock the bike to that when it's in there. I also have a hub lock so I lock that and hide the key. And if I'm going away I put all my locks on the bike!

There is also a chubb lock and a bolt on the door to the back lane (not that that stopped the thieves the first time).

That's an expensive option, but I needed the storage as well, so it was a very worthwhile investment.

My ebike is in my utility room in the kitchen. Even if I had a shed I wouldn't want a €3,000 bike sitting outside...

For over a year, I kept it inside. Now it's to the side of the house.

I have a Trimetals shed (Protect-a-cycle I think it’s called) that holds 3 bikes. Two heavy padlocks on the outside, a ground anchor inside and some hefty chains and locks. It’s rigged up to my house alarm and has a camera pointed at it.

Expensive but well worth it for the peace of mind.

Alternatively, have you considered a folding e-bike you could keep inside? I have a Brompton G Line and it’s fantastic. But again not cheap.
