    A question...

There are 6 draws predicted out of the 16 games, is this a record? What's happening there - is it an amomily or a glitch caused by similarly rated teams {in the same division). I just don't recall seeing as many draws predicted before is all.

Also, please correct the Roscommon/Dublin prediction to me a 'Dublin by 7' or something, because that's working well for us this year so far 😜

    Lol

All these power rankings are all well and good. At the end of the day, it's certain results and performances that are impressive regardless.

The six predicted draws are coincedental to the teams all involved being more or less at the same rating when home advantage is taken into account. Which happens a lot more in the league than in the championship, for obvious reasons.

As for Dublin by 7, good luck with that 😉

Of the 6 games predicted to be draws, the winning margins lay between 5 and 20 points…..not so close in the end!

Updated ranking table below, big wins for Antrim, Dublin, Clare, Laois, Louth and Tipperary.

Prediction model output below. These are to be taken with a grain of salt where a team is relatively safe and either might not care about making a league final (Div 1 teams: Donegal, Mayo, Kerry, Roscommon), or where they are already promoted (Down) or relegated (Fermanagh).

Hoping Laois continue their good form and make the round trip worth it

Down got promoted from 3 two years ago as winners. But they lost the league final to second placed Westmeath. Which gave Westmeath a place in Sam, and Down had to settle for the Tailteann. They both came straight back down last year. Westmeath are battling to go back up again, would probably something of a rarity if both went straight back up. Down are a real yo yo team, also relegated from 2 in 2022.

The really important game is the league final, but that does not have any influence on Down's approach to the Sligo game at this stage.

Ranking table update after Round 6.

Roscommon were far and away the biggest winners, while London, Wexford, Leitrim, Fermanagh and Armagh all gained 2 rating points or more.

The table seems to be shaping up, with one clear leader (Kerry), 4 teams hovering around 100, and then not much seperating 6th from 13th.

Meath might be in the 100 category and Armagh and Roscommon in the next tier, but most bookies would favour the latter in a game with the former.

It is notable that Connacht have 3 from the top 7.

Why Roscommon? Meath are around 20/1 to win the All Ireland while Roscommon are around 33/1.

The rankings sorts teams based on their past results. Meath are where they are mostly because of the big win against Kerry last season and the quarter final win against Galway. This saw us go from 10th to 2nd in two games. We fell back to 4th after the semi final loss. In the league, we've won five, lost just one but have dropped 0.2 points in the rankings from the start because of that one loss. Unless we go and win Leinster and don't lose to anyone other than the likes of Kerry or Donegal, we'll likely drop to top 8-10 by the end of the championship.

Laoisman has consistently said from the very start of this (12 years ago, jesus I'm old!) that the model should not and cannot be used for betting purposes.

The biggest disparity between teams on Sunday is Meath at 5 v Offaly at 22. Tyrone 10 v Cork 11 is the closest. Betting odds Tyrone 10/11 Cork 11/10 Draw 15/2.

A draw in both those games will see Meath and Cork promoted.

Prediction model output for the final round of games in this year's NFL.

Again, predictions to be taken with more than a grain of salt where one team is battling against relegation/looking for promotion, and the other has little to play for….or are saving themselves for a league final - Down, are you listening (please!!!)

Updated ranking table below after all 7 rounds of the league - only 1 game with no rating points exchanged, and big gains for Laois and Longford.

And as I am going to be away later this week, prediction model output for this weekend's finals:

I know it's only marginal but why are lower ranked Longford favourites against Carlow? Do they have a weaker record away from home or something?

Looks like table taking shape seems to becoming an accurate reflection. Just glancing at it. Wouldn’t make many changes in my mind. Much as I hate to say it would have Meath even higher swapping with Galway. Louth maybe around where the Rossies are. And in my mind Kildare are lucky to be in the table at all!

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I expect Meath to beat Cork and so will swap places with Galway and will perhaps reach third.

Before the League Monaghan were at 7, finished the League at 14. Cavan at 15 finished where they started. They are playing in Clones on 19 April, hard one to call.

It's more so the record against the opposing team that drives the prediction rather than home/away, although that does play a minor role. I did a dummy run again with no rating points difference between the teams, and it predicted Longford by 1.4.

I had at one stage managed to plot out how each team performs against other teams and it was clear that there were some major deviations from the normal - must have a look at that again when I get some time.

Updated ranking table after the league finals below……..

    • Donegal retake no. 1 spot, but it is tight at the top
    • A group of 3 sitting around 101, with 6 teams lurking between 91-94 and Armagh sitting in between

Will post an end of league review over the next week

Armagh have an early championship game against Tyrone. Recent form suggests that they will win this, which will put them in or around the 100 mark with Meath, Galway and Mayo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭laoisman11

They won't gain too much with it being a home game, although if they win by 5 points or more it could help them narrow the gap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭laoisman11

It definitely felt like a compelling league - the link with the Sam Maguire has heightened excitement for those at the bottom of Division 2 and the top of Division 3. And with the recent demise of Dublin as a powerhouse, more counties are seeing an opportunity to establish themselves as serious contenders.

    Big winners:

    • Roscommon were the league's biggest winner, moving up 9 ranking places and gaining 9.6 rating points after some fine wins in Division 1
    • The surprise package in Division 3 was Wexford, who, on the way to gaining promotion, picked up 8.6 rating points
    • Louth had a solid Division 2 campaign, and were within one win of getting promoted as they added 6 rating points to their tally
    • Honorable mention to London, Cork and Mayo who all increased their worth by 4.2 rating points

    Big losers:

    • Seven losses in Division 1 ensured relegation for Monaghan and 9.1 rating points lost
    • Tyrone had a surprisingly poor league campaign, losing 8.3 rating points and 7 ranking places
    • Another team that will be disappointed will be Wicklow, who had promotion in their hands, only to see it slip away
    • The All-Ireland champions normally suffer in these league reviews, as even one loss costs them dearly. Kerry's league record will read: 4 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws. Seven rating points lost, and a slip to second in the rankings.
    • Limerick, Fermanagh and Leitrim will also be glad to see the back of NFL 2026, losing 6.2, 5 and 5 rating points, respectively
