He moved on loan to the Ospreys in late January and played two matches for them before returning, so "injured all season" isn't accurate.

”hype” for Gunne ?? Must have missed that. He’s 22 and doing extremely well in my view , box kicking the only area of weakness as against very strong on defence, passing and line threat. He’s still young but has shown great promise. Foley hasn’t been injured all season he was in Wales

Bryne is 26, given that his issues tend to be mental, and that most players don't hit their prime until around 26, I think he has plenty of scope to come good. I don't get the negativity around him tbh.

I agree I find there’s a tendency to lock into your favourites and then back it irrespective of form or context. The coaches are seeing these players day to day and inevitably there will be injuries which impact form but still keep them on the pitch. Reality is we need both of them and from time to time one will be ahead of the other until it’s finally settled. 26-32 seems to be the sweet spot peak position dependant . I like Harry shows promise too

Me neither. Unfortunately for Harry (& SP) though is the coaching he is receiving at Leinster.

Frawley is 28, 10 is not his best position, yet I still expect him to improve considerably at Connacht. Even at 10!

well ****. An injury to Ryan is basically the last thing we can afford

Its very unlikely that it does occur but I wonder could Leinster bring in a Joker Second Row for the remainder of the season. Lingering injuries to James Ryan, Ryan Baird, Diarmuid Mangan and with Spicer dealing with the courts, that seems like they perfect time to search for a Joker.

    A Joker? See -Mike Mccarthy-Joking.

Is Conor O'T and Soroka in the European squad? Anyone have a list and the rules/deadlines for Medical Jokers?

Soroka is, but I don't think Conor O'Tighearnaigh is. We seemed to remove COT in January to facilitate adding Josh Kenny and Andrew Sparrow.

It's a real problem position for us now, and we've been vulnerable to exactly this scenario since Ross Molony left, given the injury history of guys like Snyman and James Ryan (to a lesser extent).

Senior squad looks at least one lock light, especially given the international commitments of Ryan & McCarthy.

Irish Rugby going to finance 3 years of Snyman injuries?

He will be back in perfect time for the World Cup in top nick to provide strong impact from the bench.

That's the most fitting end imaginable to the RG Snyman era.

Wish him all the best but he was not a good signing; even when fit he was just not good enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭FtD v2

He's contracted through the RWC, so this likely isn't the end, but would agree with the broader point.

He has generally always struck me as a bit of a flat track bully. The days when Leinster's pack are dominant and we're winning collisions all over the field he can look exceptional, but the dogfight game when you need a big bruiser of a tight head lock to start winning collisions, making big hits and turning the tide I've generally always found him lacking.

Baird may just be enough to fill the gap, although a potential Ryan injury is disastrous .

Baird to cover lock and Conan to start 6 isn't the end of the world.

Is he!? I thought it was a year extension. Bloody hell

Completely agree on him being a flat track bully - and in my defence it is one of the few things I have historically gotten right. Never really wanted him at Leinster and thought he was a poor signing and the money could be far better spent elsewhere. His reputation is out of all kilter with his performances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭FtD v2

It was noted in this article which first reported his injury that he has another year on his contract.

The lack of speculation on his future generally speaks to it anyway.

Baird back is a huge relief and just in time for knockout & final stages . Always felt nervous with RG carrying as anything good or bad could happen which can turn games. Every team will have their last season woes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭bingobango12

    Exactly my thoughts.

It’s definitely disappointing but not a complete disaster, once Ryan, McCarthy and Baird stay fit. An injury to any of those 3 and it is a disaster for the run in. Deeny, O'Tighearnaigh etc aren’t up for it for knockout games.

I do t entirely agree with this. He was good as an impact sub, making metres and giving a few really timely offloads. But this season he has given up trying to beat defenders or run through them. This season, he only runs high and gives an offload whether it's a good idea or not.

I think he has changed from a really useful impact sub to a bit of a show pony. I would miss him if he played like last year. I don't think I'll miss him now though.

What I wonder about is whether coaches were telling him to offload every time or if he was doing it in spite of their instruction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭FtD v2

When though? Think of any of the tough games we've faced over the past two seasons, when would you say he made a big difference?

As I said, he had some superb performances, but largely in games where we were already on top.

I can't even recall him ever putting in a big hit in a game. The last one I can think of was that cheap shot on Casey at test level

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 575 ✭✭✭user060916

He never tackles from what I can see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭Juventu4

Given his size it'll be late January early February at the earliest he'll return to the team likely as bench impact. He's been a big disappointment this season overall where we needed him to provide tge basics. I'd love it if we got Ross Molony back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,885 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Probably best to release Snyman now and let him rehab in RSA and join a side there when he has recovered.

He's a very expensive drag on our resources otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,491 ✭✭✭P.Walnuts

I'm no contract expert but you can't just realease him other than by paying him off to cancel his deal saving maybe a very small percentage.

He's contracted for another year, he's not just going to abandon hundreds of thousands of euro.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,395 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Keep paying him but get him rehabbing in SA if it's cheaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

Can't just release him. It would also be a sh1tty thing to do and would make players think twice abt coming to Leinster if they do that if a player got injured.

Irs probably largely covered by insurance anyway

I think RG is getting unfairly sh*t on tbh.

He isn't a starter, and it's fairly well known his best impacts come when he is off the bench against tiring teams. That is how the best and possibly the best ever international team use him and how he was used by Leinster up to this season.

The fact we have hardly seen Ryan and McCarthy this season, Mangan has been injured for the guts of it, and now Spicer has his own issues going on, means he has had to start most games this season. I'm sure Leinster know this isn't how he is best used but needs must.

    😁

Harder one to call. I think something along the lines of this:

    (15-9, 1-8):

Hugo Keenan, Tommy O'Brien, Rieko Ioane, Jamie Osborne, Josh Kenny, Harry Byrne, Jamison Gibson Park, Andrew Porter, Dan Sheehan, Tom Clarkson, Brian Deeny, Joe McCarthy, Jack Conan, Josh van der Flier, Caelan Doris (c)

Reps: Ronan Kelleher, Jerry Cahir, Rabah Slimani, Ryan Baird, Max Deegan, Luke McGrath, Sam Prendergast, Robbie Henshaw

I'm assuming none of the guys listed in the injury report make it. If they don't take a chance on Baird this week, it might be Alex Soroka in that slot (or Conor O'Tighearnaigh, assuming they replace RG with him in the European Squad before the cut off today).
