Michael Murphy should have been sent off. Terrible decision. He has been getting away with dirty strokes for years.

Lets wait and see then. I'm confident today will be long forgotten when the championship gets into it's stride.

As delightful as ever Acequion. You’d know all about bitterness as anyone on the weather forum will attest to. A few other things as well but I’ll remain civil.

I never mentioned Murphy, this has already been covered but you love your old bad faith arguments. The I throughly dislike Donegal comment a few pages back and all the likes it had. It makes Donegal winning all the more sweeter when you see stuff like that. It’s really not that deep. Great input as always.

Murphy is God up in these parts. As a fair weather fan myself I wondered what a diehard Donegal fan would make of it. She didnt disappoint 🤣

He was lucky today but he earned the right to be lucky with some of the abuse he has suffered over the years.

Fantastic performance from Donegal today I thought they were starting to wane a little after starting the league very well. The challenge now is maintaining that performance level through Ulster and for the next 4 months if they are to have a chance.

This contrasts to Kerry who really only need to peak in June. They won’t be happy with today but they won’t panic either. Jack O’Connor will use today to his advantage. They’re still far and away favorites for Sam this year.

Jack's face told alot with the hand shake at the end - he could barely look at Jim McGuinness. Either he was very disappointed or is a very sore loser.

Give it a rest . Donegal were fantastic today, played kerry off the pitch. Its ok to say that and also that Michael Murphy deserved a red card. Not that hard.

    I'm no begrudge either.

Donegal really did a number on Kerry today, middle eight battle won and mid way through the 2nd half they had 70% possession of the ball. How do you stop a free scoring Kerry? well restrict them having the ball.

On 55 minutes Donegal was 21 points ahead and Kerry should be thankful that Jim McGuinness and his team eased off after that and Kerry was then able to avoid a record defeat in a Croke Park final.

Should the two meet again this summer it will be interesting to see how much Jack O'Connor will have learnt from that defeat today.

He's probably disappointed but we don't know what's going on behind the scenes. He could be flogging the lads in training behind the scenes not worried about a peak performance now. Even if they don't win Munster they'll go into the AI series won't they? If Kerry peak for the knockout stages they'll be very hard to stop.

Donegal on the other hand that was only their second ever national League and the first for McGuiness as manager. It was a very prestigious title to win yesterday.

someone said it already on the thread, everytime jack has won the all Ireland he has won the league. It would be illogical to suggest that Kerry weren’t going all out to win that today.

Fair play to Donegal but Murphy absolutely should have had a red and from where the game was, and for the calibre of player Murphy is, it absolutely would have made a difference.

If it would have turned the game for Kerry we’ll never know, it’s irrelevant now other than for purposes of fans conversations

Ulster shouldn't matter to this team. An all ireland is the only currency that matters. People dont worry that Tipp didn't win munster last year.

In the new game if you can prevent the opposition from getting away a short kickout and make them kick to a contest and then dominate that contest that is the winning of the game everything else is just about by how much. Donegal had alot of big men around the middle and obliterated the Kerry kickout and then obliterated Kerry on the scoreboard. Once a team secures possession now it is very easy to hold onto it and they proceed as far as the attacking D and commence this long painful cycle of changing the point of the attack untill a scoring chance is created, every team does this in slightly different forms. Donegal do it with a bit of pace and a blur of quick handpasses to create an opening. Every team defend the D in similar ways too, with slight variations. They key to everything is securing possession from kickouts. Meath put away Cork with a period of kickout domination in the second half. No team can afford to let the opposition get kickouts away cheaply which is easier said than done. The excitement now in the game is the kickout contest everything else is fairly formulaic, 2 pointers at inter county level aren't anything to get too excited about either.

TV whether RTE or TG4 need to cop on to the importance of the kickout to the game. They showing replays of any score and therefore missing the kickout is a cardinal sin. All focus should be on the kickout and better shots of the scrap for possession for the contested ones, this jostle for possession is the winning and losing of games, the clipped scores after long routines around the D are only the fluff. TV needs to realise this fast

Just another thing on the kick outs which I only saw better in the second half.

The movement of the Donegal players in the back line was dragging the Kerry players out of position and overloading on them. Kerry didn't seem to get a grip on it either.

Kick out is important but I find long kicks the least interesting part of the game, not particularly skillful when it just lands between players. If teams are finding ways to find players in space then I’d be interested in seeing how they do it and a few clips of how a teams positions to stop a short kick then that is worth analysis. Stick a chart up for contested kicks, it will be as interesting as showing a few of them again.

Fielding becoming more popular was one of the main aims of the new rules and is welcome but I don't agree that 2 pointers are formulaic. In the heat of championship with defences fully drilled they will be hard earned. You are complaining about the ball being played around the D but that demonstrates the challenge of creating the shooting opportunity under pressure. Whats the alternative..easy shots with no pressure on the ball? Under the old rules the play was far slower and there were more balls fisted over the bar from close range.

The only possible rule change to consider to general play might be to limit the amount of handpasses but the game isn't all about midfield play now. The most difficult part of the game is still scoring and teams with the best forwards will always be challenging in the latter stages of the championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 848 ✭✭✭Treble double

The teams with the best forwards need to win the ball from kickouts or else the forwards will be starved, Clifford got 5 touches of the ball yesterday. TV needs to focus on what's going on from contested kickouts, it just not about just jumping for the ball, the amount of blocking and screening runs that is going on is manic, even getting to jump for a ball is a feat in itself and the tv viewer is oblivious to all this as they watch a replay of a lad clipping the ball over the bar from 30 yards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,432 ✭✭✭mattser

They give an aerial view of the contested kickout at midfield from behind the goal. The non stop replays missing live action have been an issue for years. So unprofessional. They haven't a clue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,110 ✭✭✭babybuilder

Agree. From the % possession that Kerry got they did well to score what they did. Complete reversal of the All-Ireland final. Personally the last 5 minutes of the games this weekend are hard to watch as teams hog the ball. Doesn't make for great viewing. Btw Murphy is such a bad tackler. I remember the semi-final in 2014 when he punched the Diarmuid Connolly in the midriff. He needs to take a sending off as soon as possible because his cards are marked now for the championship. If he's dropping into midfield it's only a matter of time.

I don’t love the rule that’s making kick outs this hard. I thought the idea was to try and encourage more traditional kick outs to bring back the old two midfielders challanging for the ball which was glorious at its finest.

I also miss the one on one battles where you’d generally have players lined up against each other 1-15. The game is entertaining in many ways but a lot of that is down to fitness , protection of better players and general improved conditions for players.

Glad keepers are generally back in their goals, I hated the ones running up the pitch.

There is more contesting and high fielding now than before the new rules. But we are never going back to the 2 on 2 contests and 1-15 line ups. In order to do that you'd have to create 15 marked out zones on the field and not let players leave those zones. Players are too conditioned now to stay in discrete zones at their own discretion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,112 ✭✭✭Krazy gang

Absolutely. Tg4 in particular always overdo the replays of standard scores

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,656 ✭✭✭awaywithyou

jack is like that whether he wins or loses.. he never ever looks at opposing manager when shaking hands

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭Gael85

Sure when Kerry beat Dublin in 2022 he was out hugging Ciaran Kilkenny. Didn’t see him seeking out Kilkenny 12 months later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,745 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

A shot clock needed I think - any team keeping the ball for the sake of it for 2 minutes it gets silly. It would also force the team in front to take a shot at some stage. Particularly at the end of the game.

There was a Donegal goal yesterday (first one) that must have been around the two minutes mark in total. But you could see they were waiting for that opening to attack.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭intellectual dosser

The philosophy in Ulster has always been that the best route to Sam is through winning the Ulster championship. Armagh were an exception in 2024 but that won’t change the mindsets of managers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,745 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

It is dopey though. Ulster the most difficult province makes zero practical sense. I understand it from an Ulster viewpoint- “Ulster Gaels” expression of identity and Irishness- symbolism etc etc.’ The way the Ulster crowd go on you would swear Ulster was more important than the Sam!

They are the only province who repeatedly go on about “Gaels” and Ulster counties normally seem support each other v counties from other provinces. As “Ulster men”. You certainly wouldn’t get that in the other three!

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

2 pointers won the game for Meath. Meath 1-22 (1-4-14) Cork 2-17 (2-1-15). Yesterday also Kerry's usual skill at setting up Clifford for 2 pointers deserted them. They had one, Donegal had four.

Didn't get a chance to watch the match yesterday. Caught up on the highlights there. What a horrible nasty streak in a person. It was obviously intentional. Don't know how it didn't break the jaw of the Kerry lad.

What was Conor Lane at. It was right in front of him. And he was looking intensely at it. Couldn't have missed it. Just bottled it I guess.
