AIB are falling into line with the other banks and about time. They are now cheaper than PTSB.

I wonder were people using them to get salary and then using revolut for all their purchasing hence only paying 4.50 a quarter.

AIB don't make these changes unless it's for a profit

I was paying around €5.50 per quarter by doing what you say above, getting paid into AIB and then doing all purchases, savings pockets etc. via Revolut/credit card so €6 per month is a big jump.

I like the safety of having a traditional bank but don't like the idea of paying more now. On the flip side, it's only an extra €55 per year on top of what I'm paying now but I won't have to worry about charges on my debit card or moving money around between savings and current account so maybe I'll have to suck it up.

Only €55...... I've moved to monzo. At end of it all, they've an Irish Bank licence.

I don't really understand people who say that they like having the safety of a traditional bank.

When did you last step foot in a branch, or need to talk to the bank.

I closed all my accounts with traditional banks about 2 years ago.

Since then, I've had one minor issue. An aunt sent me a cheque for my birthday. I contacted her, and let her know that I couldn't cash it. She cancelled it, and her husband did a bank transfer to me

I’m one of them. I’ve heard too many horror stories of Revolut locking accounts and having no way to speak to anyone. So I like having the option to go into a branch should something go wrong.

Better off, lodged a cheque into my BOI account, it is still not cleared, at this stage i have no option but get paid by cheque as that is how the Drug Payement scheme pays the money. They are suppose to change how the DPS works including changing from cheques to bank transfers but it will be the 3rd quarter before it will come in.

Do you know anyone this has happened to, or is it all 3rd party story?

I ask, because I've had a revolut account since 2016 without any issues, and I also don't know anyone personally, who's had issues.

I've no problem with traditional banks, but I was paying €6 a month for ptsb to provide a worse service than what I get for free from revolut.

I used also have an Ulster Bank account back in the day, and I think it was around 2014 when no one could access their money. So it's not like traditional banks haven't had issues in the past

I've heard a lot of Revolut stories, even big business accounts. Issue is the length of time to get it unlocked.

I'm trying monzo and I got a CS chat on a Sat afternoon and they answered my non urgent query clearly. Followed up a few days later which was impressive. Much better vibe than Revolut as a salary receiver. I only Revolut for foreign currency pots, sending money to people and their disposable cards.

Banking with AIB 37 years now have Revolut since 2016, So normally just transfer money from my AIB account to Revolut. The only payments that come out of my AIB account is the utilities and car loan. I have also since got the BOI Aerlingus CC so use that for more or less everything. Paying the bill in full so no interest charges.

I use Revolut exclusively since ~4 years ago and as someone said before, only had an issue once with someone refunding me that was paid with a cheque. I just requested the payer to do a bank transfer instead, problem solved.

I've never paid to use bank services, this is probably 20+ years now. Traditional banks charge you to offer far worse services and they badly lag behind in technology, so I will steer clear from them.

I have to say for a few years now I've been using Revolut as my main bank, wages and direct debits etc with no issue, my wife is the same, we still have a joint account with ptsb because that's who our mortgage is with. €150 in fees a year for both current accounts with Ptsb just annoyed me, when Revolut is free, now I was nervous at first getting wages paid into Revolut.. half expecting some issue but it's been fine.

Very interesting, i didnt know you could make payments from revolut to bank accounts, i thought it was payments just between phones did my first phone to bank transfer there, so handy ! im with an post and the app is shocking, I also pay 5 euro per month for the pleasure of using an post as my bank,

So if you have cash how do you get that into your bank account if you want to use it for something ?

You need a bricks-and-mortar account to lodge cash to. Fortunately, there are free options. I have a share account with my local credit union with fulfills the job.

I'm the same, a shares account with my local credit union. Short queues, open until 5 and Sat mornings and no fuss regarding cash or cheques. Same with large withdrawals of cash as a lot of the tech banks have a limit of amount you can withdraw from an ATM monthly.

I get my wages paid into my Credit Union account and then transfer spending money to whatever fintech bank I happen to be using at any given time.

People don't realize that a free shares CU account has an iban and you can easily sepa in and out

Plus probate doesn't apply to cu money, very important.

I've been paying about €5 per quarter, so now will be €18 per quarter (or €72 per year vs existing €20 per year approx)

    Nice…

Thankfully still on my free banking from PTSB with my switcher account from many moons ago. Surprised they didn’t have it in their t&c to start charging

Backed with AIB for past 40 yrs, closed my account on friday. Working off revolut now, might get a second online account with another outlet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,178 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

I'd recommend monzo for a second account. Seems decent.

Credit union shares account is handy too to have backup fund in a separate institution.

Will Monzo have walk in branches?

Occasionally need to get stuff physically stamped at my AIB

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,178 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

No. Would u try a credit union savings account? You get an iban and it gives the luxury of cash and cheque transactions in branch. I'd only use that 2-3 times a year and monzo satisfies the rest

I have been with AIB for a very very long time. I have their IBAN set up with Revenue, friends/family, salary, etc. It would be a huge hassle to move elsewhere. However, €6 a month is a huge dive!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 791 ✭✭✭PixelCrafter

I must look at AIB's table of fees as I really don't know what I'm paying. I don't use them for the fiddly day to day transaction stuff - that all goes on Revolut, but I don't quite trust Revolut with my 'main money' as I've just read too many stories online about random AI-driven lockdowns and no explanations.

thanks , am in process of setting up a standard N26 account , will put some emergency cash into it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,875 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

What's the difference between Monzo and Revolut? If both are online I mean

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,538 ✭✭✭bmc58

You can't beat walking into a bank branch(in spite of a queue) to speak to a human to sort a problem.

Anyone looking for a totally free no nonsense basic current account from a bricks and mortar physical bank should check out an EBS money manager account.

While it doesn't have an app but you can access online banking via your browser if you want and they actually still send you out paper statements for free aswell.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

Seems reasonable enough. I paid 33.60e in fees for the last quarter, so I'm "saving" with the new rate.

Every time I walked into an AIB and also BOI branch to solve problems they simply put me on the phone with some customer service.

Useless and a complete waste of time.
