I’ve recently set up an online radio station called Forever 80s Galway (launched 28th Sept 2025), and it’s been broadcasting 24 hours a day exclusively online since then. I wanted to share it here and get some honest feedback.

👉 Listen here: Forever80sradio.ie Or ask your smart speaker to " Play Forever 80s Galway Radio" (Also Option to ask Alexa to play Forever 80s Radio)

    What it is:
A 24/7 stream focused entirely on 80s music — not just the usual chart hits, but also lesser-played tracks, album cuts, and some Irish music from the era.

    Why I set it up:
Most stations tend to recycle the same small pool of 80s songs. The idea here is to create something with more depth and variety, closer to how radio used to feel — music-first, minimal talk.

    Charity element:
It’s run as a charity-based station, with the aim of helping support and fund festive lights locally. So it’s a bit of a passion project with a community angle as well.

    What I’m looking for:
Would really appreciate any constructive feedback from people here:

    • Is the music mix working?
    • Too obscure / not enough well-known tracks?
    • Sound quality OK?
    • Something you’d leave on in the background?

Not trying to spam — just genuinely interested in improving it and seeing if there’s an audience for it.

    Cheers 👍

    Questions:
What sets your 80s station apart from all the other 80s radio stations that are available online?
What other streaming platforms are you on? Tunein is the biggest, have you a stream there?
    What is your bitrate?
How many songs are you rotating?
    Any live presenters?
What playout system are you using?
Are you doing an even spread of 80-84, 86-89, male and female, well known and album tracks, the hits and the radio hits, obscure and spice tracks?
    Are you a registered charity?

You might think that the 'more music, less talk' is a winner, but that line has been around since the 1950s when things like Spotify and Apple Music didn't exist. If its just background with zero marketing, publicity, advertising, how do you expect to gain any traction?

    Hi there,

Thanks for the detailed questions — really appreciate the opportunity to explain what we’re building with Forever 80s Galway Radio.

What sets us apart is that we believe we are Ireland’s first AI-powered 80s radio station, combining curated music with AI-driven presenters to recreate the feel of classic radio in a modern way. Our schedule currently includes:

    • Vinny Vinyl – Breakfast (7am–10am)
    • Jenny Jukebox – 10am–2pm
    • Ricky Retro – 2pm–5pm
    • Tony Tracks – 5pm–8pm
    • Claire Cassette – 8pm–2am

Alongside the music, we run an hourly “80s Flashback News” service, featuring one serious and one lighter news story from the decade. And because we know how much we Irish love our weather, we also include an hourly weather update.

Our DJs keep things simple and music-focused, but still add value — sharing trivia and context about the artists and songs. Typically, they’ll talk around 10 tracks per hour, giving listeners those nostalgic details without overloading the flow.

We are currently streaming at 128kbps, ensuring solid, consistent audio quality, and we’re rotating circa 2,000 songs, with careful attention to balance — early vs late 80s, male/female artists, hits, radio edits, album tracks, and some deeper “spice” cuts.

In terms of availability, we’re listed on TuneIn and other major radio directories. If you’re aware of any platforms we’re missing, we’d genuinely appreciate you pointing us in the right direction.

To clarify structure, the radio station itself is not a registered charity, however all funding is handled through a CLG (Company Limited by Guarantee), which is a registered charity.

On your point about “more music, less talk” — we completely agree. That alone isn’t enough in today’s landscape. We are doing limited local publicity and some paid social media advertising, but as this is ultimately a community-driven project, we are heavily reliant on goodwill and organic growth rather than operating as a fully commercial venture.

The goal is to build something distinctive, consistent, and genuinely enjoyable — not just another automated stream, but a station with identity and personality.

Thanks again for the questions, and we’re always open to feedback or suggestions.

    Best regards,
    Forever 80s Galway Radio

stop using AI. Not just in your responses here, but also on the air. I had a listen earlier and it’s a gimmick that gets old very quickly.

As a nerdy tech project I appreciate the work involved but when I tune in I heard some weird Galway/American voice reading out boring badly written trivia about the songs.

    Honestly? Just play the tunes!

    Honestly? Just play the tunes!

Thanks. This is exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. I figured the people who participate in a radio forum would have a good understanding of radio.

To be honest it's a lot cheaper just playing the tunes. Am I just creating yet another soleless playlist then? Same ole same old...

Again, thanks for taking time to listen and in your feedback.

AI-driven presenters to recreate the feel of classic radio in a modern way. Our schedule currently includes:

    • Vinny Vinyl – Breakfast (7am–10am)
    • Jenny Jukebox – 10am–2pm
    • Ricky Retro – 2pm–5pm
    • Tony Tracks – 5pm–8pm
    • Claire Cassette – 8pm–2am

So, are you saying that the presenters themselves are virtual presenters generated by AI? That is quite a novelty and I suppose it sets this station apart from many online stations where there are no presenters (virtual or otherwise), and from those that do have "real" presenters. I gave it a short listen earlier this morning and heard "Jenny Jukebox" who seemed to have an English accent.

    In terms of availability, we’re

listed on TuneIn and other major radio directories.

If you’re aware of any platforms we’re missing, we’d genuinely appreciate you pointing us in the right direction.

You could try getting on to Radio Garden. There are 1000's of stations from around the world on it.

Yes, all the presenter's are virtual presenters generated by AI.

Jenny Jukebox is my personal favorite. She's our most expensive DJ. She's generated using different technology to the other four DJs.

The other four are American presenter's and I've written a script to try make them sound as Irish as I can. The technology I'm using for these four is still in early development. I suppose most users don't mind the accents, but for radio use it's important.

Sometimes I let them speak in their native accents. I think They speak more expressively then.

I'll look into radio garden. Thanks.

Technically it’s an impressive feat but the link content itself is filler and would be unnecessary from an actual jock let alone an AI one.

If you’re doing it to see if you can do it then good on ya; but from this diehard 80s music lovers viewpoint it’s just distracting and annoying. I’m listening for some 80s gems and I’m nearly 60. I don’t need reminding that Eye of the Tiger is from a Rocky film.

again apologies if this sound harsh because I do totally appreciate it’s a project for fun rather than profit.

Theres a guy in the Canaries running something slightly similar if you’re interested .. Radio Brian.

Thanks for in your comments. We are of similar vintage. I spent the 80s in my teens and early 20s...

Yes, it's not a commercial venture. I'm retiring in June and I see this little project as a war of giving back to the community I worked in.

If the jock was to talk, what would you want them to say?

I would strongly agree with @TheBMG ,obviously a lot of work has gone into this project, but there are a few problems, first and foremost is that there is no natural flow.

The transition from music to VOs to IDs is obvious, there is also a variation in audio levels which amplify the issue.

The VOs themselves sound 'fake' and out of place.

A current and previously played is standard these days and I think would benefit the station.

Thanks for your constructive comments. I'll take all on board. Smoother transitions,
    Consistent audio levels,
    More natural, better-produced voiceovers
Adding standard listener-friendly features like now/previously played.

I also want to thank all who listened in yesterday. My average daily listens is 200-250, yesterday it reached over 350. Thanks for taking time to listen.
