Another thing I saw Molumby do and I have seen lots of Irish midfielders do it over the years. The ball was up in the air with no one around him, he heads it straight back to them instead of taking it down and controlling the ball, try to get some possession going, this was at a time where we badly needed to hold on to the ball for a bit.

What a difference 24 hours can make. We've experienced heartbreak in many different forms at this stage, not sure where this one ranks yet but really thought we had that game won at 2-0, it was hard to accept that we were out two hours later.

But I have to admit I'm feeling more optimistic today certainly that our last few playoff defeats. Most importantly for me it feels like the interest in the national team is back after almost 8 or 9 years of indifference or apathy towards them. November was unbelievable and the Hungary game was truly one of the best moments we've had, there was so much excitement going into last night and the country really bought into it again. I think it's reminded us all of the impact this team can have on the country. It's going to be hard watching the world cup knowing we could've been there but we have to keep the ball rolling and keep this upward trajectory ahead of a home Euros in 2028.

That run up he took still does my head in, if your not confident take a good run and leather it ffs…sooner see fly over the bar than a pass to the keeper ….at least Azaz put it in the corner although not very well and it was good save, he had very little to do for Browne's

He set up Parrots goal against Hungary besides that rubbish

Always find it mad how there is such a disparity in penalty taking among professional teams.

Surely even a run of the mill CB in the lower leagues would look like a stud at amateur level, and would score plenty of goals if playing up front. Like, every facet of their abilities are scouted, not just the attributes specific to their position?

Hardly THAT hard to hit a penalty with some sort of acumen?

Fantasy land stuff. Czechia are not going to the WC. 2 bad bad teams

How many times has Shane lowry hit an iron? Yet the man still hit the water from the tee recently to blow a lead.

You cannot replicate pressure no matter how much you practice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,555 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Practice makes perfect but it goes out the window under pressure. If it didn't we wouldn't watch sport. It would just be flawless athletes performing as expected.

There's some serious downbeat comments on here.

As I sit in Brussels from a connecting Prague flight though, it's clear this is our best campaign since 2016.

We do need to ask ourselves why can't we tale advantage, 2 nil lead, opposition on the rack, what is it that prevents us comfortably seeing out a 2 goal lead , why does everything have to be helter skelter by the skin of our teeth etc.

But this campaign has turned out to be huge, its upped our rankings, our believe, the nation's mood and brought Parrot's potential to the forefront.

I'll pray for a draw that isn't as bad as Netherlands and France but we should be thinking of these euros with more hope. 6 months ago we looked like we might finish bottlm of the group

Roll it down the middle. I thought after 3 well taken penalties the last 2 lads should have gambled down the middle. Guaranteed on target and chances are it goes it. Browne's head was completely gone so no way he'd have thought about the situation logically.

I disagree, having practiced still improves your chances.

When Ireland get a few results and get a bit of momentum you'll find these kind of 'fans' crawl out of the woodwork.

They're basically the type of fan who watch the premier league only and cry like a spoiled baby if their team loses. Calling this Ireland side bottlers or calling the players useless just shows their lack of knowledge on the national team and the sport in general.

    Worldclass armchair supporters.

I was surprised Collins didn’t take one. Dara O’Shea should have taken one. I mean if it went further into sudden death they would have ended up taking one anyway. Anyone left on the field should be ready to take one. Browne unfortunately didn’t look up for it at all.

True, you wont find them at the match in the Aviva next Tuesday.

Read my post again. I said last 32 at best, which is very very different to thinking we'd get there 😂

Worth noting though that we've never gone out at the group stage of any of the 3 world cups we've taken part in

We have to consider that while we might get Euros by default if others do the job, we are only guaranteed to play in Dublin if we do it ourselves, qualifying and not playing at lansdowne would be a disaster.

We absolutely did bottle it. No good ignoring it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,002 ✭✭✭✭TheCitizen

Had forgotten he missed a penalty v Slovakia. That really should have played a part in the decision making. He may have ended up taking one later anyway but he really shouldn’t have been one of the first 5 to take one given the Slovakia missed penalty.

I think Collins or O’Shea should have stood up and just hit that one hard.

But you cant practice under the pressure. So its pointless.

As i said previously theyre professional footballers. The mechanics of kicking the ball are practiced daily.

That practice counts for nothing if you cant handle the pressure of taking a penalty on the night.

Ken Early taking no prisoners in the IT this morning and he's right. Been too much bullsh!t about the "growth of the team". We beat a disinterested Portugal and a cursed Hungary side who should have won.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/2026/03/28/ken-early-we-must-admit-irelands-shortcomings-and-accept-life-as-a-giant-cockroach/

What we saw on Thursday was back to square one pre-November stuff with this team against a side who were there to be beaten and who played worse than Armenia did home and away.

One fortuitous penalty and an OG saw us 2 - 0 up and we just didn't have the ability to see it out.

Now we are off doing the usual Irish pride glorious defeat thing when very few seem to be saying the team failed.

You could understand it against a team like France maybe but not against the rabble that beat us on Thursday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,002 ✭✭✭✭TheCitizen

Ken likes to play devils advocate it’s part of his job to make a name for himself and keep himself relevant. I think the truth is as usual somewhere in the middle. We did blow a wonderful opportunity having gone 2 up. We did look to be the better team though and definitely have improved in recent games as a team not afraid to attack and have a go in games. Need to build on that though and build consistency.

The away performance in Armenia isn’t that long ago and most thought Hallgrimsson would be gone at the end of the campaign after that. Make sure we build towards the Euros and abject performances like that one are a thing of the past. qualify on our own right and secure a home game in the competition. That’s the goal. We’re on a much better path.

However Ken is right that the hard luck story v Czechia doesn’t ring through. We weren’t unlucky at all, in fact we had things go our way but still managed to not get it over the line.

Agree but also based on the game they were the worst team we've played in the qualifying round too. They were worse than Armenia and Hungary on Thursday (I know on paper that's not the case but just the game itself). Really frustrating.

"usual Irish pride glorious defeat thing when very few seem to be saying the team failed"

Away from home, Czech 11/10 favs, hit the woodwork twice, much better team first half and second half in extra time... Lots to be proud of and it's okay to have pride in them given what they done vs Portugal and Hungary away from where they were.

    Failed to win - okay

Hinting at them being failures - harsh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,028 ✭✭✭RoryMac

The squad had 2 training sessions between meeting up and the game.

It wouldn't have made any difference.

HH has been asking for a sport physiologist since he took over and the FAI can't get funding. That is something that would make a difference in such a tight schedule

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 507 ✭✭✭DireD

Laughable that people think practising anything even for 2 hrs wouldn't make a difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,800 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

You can tell some people are happier we lost so they can start their usual shtick of berating the team and ignoring context. So predictable.

You may give him a shout so and tell him not to waste his time practicing anymore 🙄
