I log my interesting spots in the database. It's very rare I get a photo and some of the rarer ones I'm not 100% certain of and don't log (usually something in flight and glimpsed).

There is a list of bird sightings that is updated daily but I've no idea how: Bird Sighting Search - Irish Birding

Turned 60 this weekend so decided to celebrate with my first 100k of the year (among other things). Headed from town to Tallaght, Saggart, Newcastle, Grand Canal, Naas, Ballymore, Blessington and home over Ballinascorney. Headwind most of the way out and lots of muddiness around Digbys bridge.

Met a chap on the canal who'd managed to get the head of his Co2 inflator jammed onto the valve of his tubeless setup. Couldn't figure any way of getting it off, my suggestion was to snap the valve and put in a tube but he reckoned even breaking the valve wouldn't get it off the wheel. No idea how you'd solve this one and it didn't encourage me to go tubeless. Hopefully he managed to fix it, bit of a hike back to the road.

Also saw a young pup nearly come a cropper as it tried to make friends with a swan. A deft yank of the lead by the owner saved the day as the swan decided not to pursue.

Ballinascorney road was marked as closed but took the descent slowly and managed to get past the roadworks ok just as the rain was setting in. Lovely day out, 103k all in but fitness is seriously in need of some attention.

It was ok yesterday but if they were working with heavy equipment on the closed section, getting by on a bike could be an issue. The actual works I saw yesterday are on the lower part of the road, after the reservoir and before Footee Tallaght. You can circumvent them by taking Ballymaice Lane or alternatively if you don't mind a small detour and a bit of light gravel, going down Allagour road and around the reservoirs is a lovely diversion, or alternatively Allagour road, Glassamucky, Bohernabreena would also work.

Anyone know if Cruagh road is ok for bikes as it is also marked as closed?

    Seconds and Minutes , 60 seconds =1 Minute and 60 Minutes = 1 hour.

    A bit of lateral thinking..me thinks 🤔

    Anyway happy 60th

Short spin out by Bahernabreena and up the rather steep gravel path at the back of Glenasmole and back by the reservoirs and home via the Dodder. Headwind on the way out left me knackered before the gravel climb which I ended up beaten by and pushing the bike up the steeper bits. Found the descent a bit too sketchy as well so pleased enough to get back to flat paved ground.

Coming down the hill at Firhouse with the wind at my back for a change felt a wobble and heard an almighty bang. New rear Schwalbe G-One R Pro Super Race ripped at the seam leading to a blowout. Didn't really have anything I could use as a tyre boot and then remembered someone on here using a crisp packet. Found a gel wrapper which I folded double and tried that. Managed to kill one tube in the process of replacing the tyre but just about made it home on the second with minimal pressure, keeping all my weight on my feet and speed down. Will add a proper tyre boot to the saddle bag next time (wrappers don't really do the job, see below at end of the journey!) and won't be using this model of tyre ever again. Looks very much like a manufacturing fault and a dangerous one at that, I'll be getting on to Schwalbe.

how many miles on the tyre, do you think?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 16,305 Mod ✭✭✭✭smacl

Very few, about 250k at a guess. Pretty certain it is a manufacturing fault. I was lucky in that it was the rear tyre as I was doing about 40kph at the time and the front going would have meant a likely spill. Also lucky I wasn't in the middle of nowhere off road. Ordering up replacements for front as well as damaged rear tyre as I have zero confidence in it. Could be a one off but could also be an issue with a batch of them.

Was in Loughrea for the weekend, had brought the bike to do a spin but the weather forecast was for solid rain all Sunday.

It wasn't that bad at 11.30 so I set off on a random route up into the Slieve Aughty hills.

Weather was actually grand in the end, a bit of rain but nothing major. Crossed paths with 1 jogger, 1 cyclist and 1 skittish horse who I had to stop for coz I think I was spooking it.

Only things that made the spin of note were I now have a 4 week streak in Strava - not sure when I ever had one of those before.

And I had a weird mechanical about 10k from home - gears got stuck and pedals wouldn't rotate. Not 100% if this was the sole reason but I took off back wheel to see what was going on and saw the cassette lock ring was loose and so the cassette was too.

I hand-tightened the lock ring (for what use that was) and cycled very gingerly home the last 10k.

I don't think the world's greatest boot would have made much difference to that. Nasty and probably lucky for you it was the back and not the front

Out in shorts again yesterday for the second time this week as I went to & from the office. Yesterday, I also left my jacket in by backpack so just a base layer and jersey.
On my spin home, I decided to take in the hills around Saggart. Shortly after leaving the office, I needed to check something and stopped my Garmin. By the time I have climbed the first climb (Lugg Lane), I noticed that I never restarted the poxy thing so missed out on about 10km and 200m
Still, along the spin to Saggart, I paired up with another cyclist who had just snapped his rear derailleur cable. Have to say, it was nice to have the bit of company along the boring but busy bits of road.

Also out yesterday lunch, incredibly mild so also ended up taking off the wind-stopper, leaving base layer and short sleeve jersey. Garmin battery died about 5k in but no harm as it was pleasant just taking in the sunshine and admiring the scenery along the Dodder. Lovely brisk tail wind coming home so I missed the Garmin for that bit ;)

190km last Tuesday, not bad for March, sayz I.

One lousy lonely Strava like. Shaggers, the lot of them!

Decided to take the long way home from work yesterday and complete some new lanes around Kilanarden. Bloody hell! Garmin spending half the time showing gradients in the mid to late teens with a few stretches maxing out at 20%. Finished up going via Ballinascorney Rd & Ballymaice Ln which was like a commuter route, given the traffic. The surface from Allagour Rd to the Famine Cross is still as lumpy as ever so my tired legs found this the toughest of the evening.

@Seth Brundle I'm doing most of my cycling around those roads at the moment, met a tour bus on Ballymaice last week. A welcome opportunity to get off the bike for a minute, pull it into the side and let the bus past. Some steep bits for sure.

If you're out that way, another attractive alternative to get you past the road works on Ballinscorney is in by the reservoir (light gravel) and up Allagour road (also steep!). Roads from there up to the Military road are also a good challenge and really attractive.

The turn right in your Ballymaice Lane map is a little toughie.

Haven't gone around the reservoir path but have done most of the lanes around there incl. Allagour Road (& Glasavullaun Lane) and up around Cunard & Military Rd.

Lunchtime spin from Harold's Cross, Bohernabreena, Miltary road and back via Stocking Lane. Absolutely glorious out there today and supposed to be good for the next few days.

yep, got out for a spin, beautiful out.

had to roar at a cyclist for running a very late red and who looked at me with a dim look on his face as he passed me.

Got out for an hour yesterday after work - first time getting the fingerless gloves out this year and it was glorious.

Had to let a roar at some dimwit MGIF driver that was half wheeling my trying to squeeze past on a roundabout exit where I deliberately hadn't left the space to avoid exactly that. They did back off

Out again today around Glassamucky and Glenasmole valley. Those looking for a bit of extra suffering over the weekend will be delighted to hear Ballinascorney road appears to be back open ;)

spotted a kestrel out on the bike today, very near the perimeter fence of dublin airport. probably the third time i've seen one in that general area, i wonder if there's a nest nearby - would be on the parcel of land that was being discussed as a location for a third terminal, near the boot inn.
