Every time you give an opinion that a team might lose its "writing them off"

Every time a team does lose its "a bottle job".

Some people even ones who watch sport all year can't actually talk about it and just spout clichés.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,612 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

It wasn't a bottle job. That line is absolute nonsense.

We've a decent team that gave everything last night and went out on pens.

I wonder if Manning will pull out of the Macedonia game. Don't think our fans will give him any stick but he probably doesn't want to be the elephant in the room either.

Agonising to come up short yesterday. We were hugely disciplined and played some good stuff especially in the first half. Czechia never really looked liked scoring in that second half until they got a soft free kick. And even that finish had a large dollop of luck going in off the back of the head.

Great to see people caring about the national team again. HH has done a great job turning it around. Yesterday was one that got away and on another day with a little bit more luck we get through but the improvement over the last 3 games compared to where we were before is striking. Wasn’t too long ago we lost 1-0 at home to Luxembourg.

after the night I'm sure Heimir knew it was possibly too much with the quality of players missing.

Its actually quite likely none of the subs that came on last night would have come on at all if he had a fully fit squad available. His options were slim to none.

even though tony kept asking him in his interview is this your last game in an lreland shirt… what a knob

When you go 2 nil up, the last thing you want is to give away something so cheap. But sadly that’s what happened. Silly pull.

Either way though, we simply don’t have the players to really expect World Cup qualification.

Last time we qualified we had the likes of Roy Keane, Robbie Keane, Duff, Given, Finnan, O Shea and a good few other very decent players

It's the best we played since peak MO'N with one of our worst sides.

Half of our starting 11 is finally in a good place but we are short a key few and an entire bench. Once Ogbene and Coleman tired we had nobody even close who could come on and replace them. One of the few positive changes we could make ended up in hospital after 5 minutes on.

It's good to have a team to be proud of again tbh. Stephen Kenny nearly destroyed us, and set us back a long way.

Hopefully we can get up the rankings now and have a chance of qualifying for the Euros.

The next world cup is in Saudi, (puke).

He's definitely retiring at the end of the season.

    He's fit but never plays.

I'd imagine he'll stay on at Everton as a coach. Maybe we could get him in with one of our youth teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,754 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

    Yeah exactly.

We need to do well in next Nations League and Euro 28 qualifiers and try to get our ranking back to the 40s at least.

Much easier to qualify when you're 2nd seed in a group.

Oh I think he would get some stick. His stupidly really cost us. I suspect he wont be involved though on Tuesday

    Devastated.

Not looked at this thread. Won't be looking at tv or news for a few days yet.

Very proud of every one of those lads though

Question: do ye think physical attendance at Tuesday game (have a season ticket so have tickets already) will count towards credits to Euro tickets? Getting ahead here but I needed to point to something to pick the moods of the kids at home up after game last night

I feel for the XI named against North Macedonia. Really weird one to play in front of an audience of fans who bought tickets for a completely different game, or their empty seat because of it.

The 2 penalties missed by Browne and Azaz were pathetic efforts.Casual preparation before a lazy run up that you wouldnt see in your local park.

Disappointing, the penalties outcome was always a strong possibility and Heimar didn't do much preparation on it.

At least we are out the other end of the Kenny debacle.

However it's just two miracle results v Portugal and Hungary that setup last night, they need to be better from the start in the next Euro qualifying.

And the next WC will primarily be in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with an opening game being in Uruguay to celebrate the 100 anniversary.

    2036 is Sudai Arabia.

A home Euros on the line next time out. We have to qualify or the game here will be in a new dark place. The FAI really needs it too. Another angle to defeat yesterday is it keeps the FAI finances in a precarious state.

Not qualifying for tournament after tournament is badly hurting the game here.

We don't have enough for a world cup yet but we have enough to qualify for the Euros.

yeah ref seemed very lenient with them, they were left free to barge into our players all night. A yellow card or two for them could easily have become red, they had no discipline but were allowed get away with it.

Devastating to go out on penalties. Lack of options in one or two key areas proven costly. This team has made great strides though in recent months under Hallgrimsson. No going back to the turgid football where we would barely score a single goal in most matches. I think we probably were the better team overall or at least played better football. Plenty to build on for this team and squad.

Gutted for Coleman as it was his last chance. He’ll probably retire after this dead rubber game v Macedonia on Tuesday.

Not practicing them and then telling the world you haven’t practiced them was fairly dim

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,003 ✭✭✭✭TheCitizen

Scales will start. I think he was missed. He’s not the most technical of players but he’s exactly the type you want in a battle like last night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,726 ✭✭✭Benedict XVI

Qualification for 2028 is a bit different.

Two spots are held for the countries that don't get in via the normal qualifying process.

England will get in via the usual process you would expect.

If we fail to qualify the normal way we have to hope that one of Scotland or Wales qualify, or if they both fail to qualify we have to hope that we are ranked higher than one of them.

    It's a low bar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,828 ✭✭✭Jaffa3000

2 nil up after 25 minutes. It’s not an opinion, it’s a fact

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,828 ✭✭✭Jaffa3000

Saying they weren’t practiced was perhaps a bit stupid but not practicing them doesn’t make much difference. England made a big point of that and proceeded to lose the Euros in 2021 at home on penalties. Comes down to pot luck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 645 ✭✭✭CONSI

Practising penalties is a bit of a myth, are you going to practice after 120 minutes of a physical demanding game, with sirens and fans cheering for you to miss. Are you going to practice with the extra knowledge of knowing you might put your team through, or out or up in the shootout. You can practice all you want but then might not be on when the penalties come around. I'm sure Smodiczs was brought on with one eye to taking a penalty, these things happen and hope he's ok. So I think people put too much into practising penalties. Saying that, if in doubt, if your legs are tired, if the nerves are kicking in, then put your boot through it and smash it down the middle…outside of who took our 5 I'm not sure who was next up, defenders all looked shot, young lad on his debut…maybe Kelliher could have taken one, but you needed him to focus on saving them…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,902 ✭✭✭✭paulie21

Yeah, FAI sent an email yesterday that it was worth 2 credits to attend on Tuesday for season ticket holders

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,679 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

We got loads of soft frees for barging. Plenty that shouldn't have been given.

The way I read it it's who has the higher position in qualifying and not the rankings.

Saying that the ref gave us a very soft peno on Collins
