I listened in on Merlin auctions today - and that 2018 eGolf came up for auction for the third time - after going "sold" for €8600 first time, and then going for €7800 "provisionally sold" second time around. Today someone online was very keen, and someone in the auction hall (conveniently) kept bidding to push the price up and took it to €9400 or so, and ofcourse sold to the online bidder in the end. A bit sus, but caveat emptor etc. Plus fees taking it to 10k easy.

The 192 Model S didn't sell with top bid of €18,200 I think it was. The 191 Model S 100D went for €20,200

What’s the likely range summer/winter in one of these?
Is this the one that’s suffer from the failing planetary gear system?

I could be in the market for something similar, but I need it to cover 130km per day, 60% motorway.

€10K was too much for that eGolf it was rough looking in the photos.

Interesting…the 192 Model S was the better car.

i have one and I have a 130km round trip to work, 80-90% motorway and it comfortably does it even in the winter.

No, but to be fair, all the good stuff is recorded on here

    Thanks.
Do you have much more range after your travel?
I’m new to all this, electric car would suit my wife, but she refuses.
I might be able to make it work for me depending on range/charging.
bug that example is a lot cheaper than any other on the market, I wonder how bad the damage was.

During the summer that round trip would use roughly 50% of the battery, so I could nearly do it twice.

During the winter it would be closer 60% and and maybe as high as 65% on a really bad day

So in both scenarios there would be plenty left over for local journeys.

She might have her mind changed when she sees your fuel bill 😅. Conservatively I worked out it's about 1/5 of the price to drive if you charge at even a night rate (and that was back when diesel was 1.70). If your day usage isn't high you might even be able to go for an EV rate.

If your doing that journey every day for work you could easily be saving €2-3k a year on fuel.

My wife was never against it, quite the opposite, but we didn't plan to use the EV as much as we do. We now basically use the EV wherever possible and just use the other car if we need two cars or need the space.

But your wife is not alone, my Aunt has a 77kWh id4 for years and she hates it, she terrified of running out of battery. She has a trip coming up that the car could do twice and she is considering borrowing our 14 year old diesel to avoid it 😅

Re the damage, there is definitely some marks on the front, I'm not sure if this is the issue referenced in the ad. The first thing that came to my mind is double check the adaptive cruise control works as it uses a sensor inside the Hyundai logo

Edit: the negatives of a 38 in my opinion are

It's very slow to rapid charge, 44kW is the fastest I've seen I think, and that's usually after a few minutes of charging. So I wouldn't recommend it as a car you often have to go outside of your home range.

It's quite expensive to service if your doing big mileage. If your doing 30k km a year you will need to get it serviced twice a year. The services are €100, €250, €100, €500 (that's from the cheapest Hyundai dealer I found, Limerick), so you need to budget for €500 a year for servicing.

Tyres are relatively expensive, so factor that in if they are not good on the one you are looking at. I put 4 michellan cross climates on it 30k km ago and the rears are coming close to need to be replaced. I think they were €175 each

Ex Taxi. He supplies a lot to the trade.

    Thanks for your detailed answer.

We are living rural (ish) and have 2x 2ltr diesels in the house, I have a 130k round trip commute every day, but she has 3 to 4 20k round trips between work and collecting kids daily, ideal for an electric car I reckon.

My plan would be to get rid of one diesel and use the other for long distance/my commute.
But she won’t entertain fully electric because of range anxiety and I may get stuck with driving whatever electric I buy.

Thanks for the tips re adaptive cruise control, if I go for a look I’ll check it out.

It could have been a complete inside-job bidding up the price like that - someone online really fell for it.

I was wondering why all auctions are not online in this day and age - now I think I know why (online auctions leave a fully auditable trail and less room for err.. "creative" solutions like this).

”Range anxiety” doesn’t truely leave you until you have your own “petrol pump” outside your door - AKA a charger.

Honestly, if you could get a loan of an EV for a weekend, fully charged, it would help “convert” your other half. It doesn’t matter what calculations you put down on paper, in my experience, it’s too easy for some to just “poo poo” the idea of an electric car- but once they experience driving one for more than a day, no matter how good their ICE is, it just feels old fashioned .

You'll always find a student somewhere willing to splash €1.5-2k on a car regardless of mileage or age. If you consider that to be your "absolute floor" level you're never going to struggle to sell a car

They could do that online too Shirley? I’d doubt many do this false bidding as a regular occupation - too easy to get stuck with a car.

Preparing for first jump to an EV, coming from a 12 year old Diesel i40 that's costing more to service yearly. Test drove a few EV's - Kona, ID3&4, Megane E-tech and Polestar. Liked them all, ID3&4 were both baseline and felt a bit basic inside, slight preference towards Polestar. To get something with decent range and low'ish mileage need to come up to 2022-2023 and budget is approx 20k with whatever they give me for i40. any recommendations or things to look out for, South Leinster/Munster region

Probably not the right thread for that question but, Tesla Model 3 is offers the best value in EVs out there, if the shape & size suits your needs.

I know the regulations for property auctions are very strict. Estate agents etc are supposed to record each bid keep a record of who submitted the bids. Might not be the case for in person auctions

Keep an eye on this thread here. There was some MGs posted not so long ago for less than 10k. Now if you feel the VW is a basic car wait till you hop in to a ZS

Think the ID3 was the entry level one 21/22 model, was a lovely drive at the same time. Mon-Fri driving is only approx 70-100km per day (35km round trip to work) plus evening activities with kids. will certainly have a look at the Tesla Model 3. any of the ones i had looked at seemed to have high mileage to fall into the budget

I won’t derail the thread any further, but I think that’s a sterling idea, two of her SILs are driving full electric cars, I must make enquiries.

Thanks for all the advice on thread here folks.

EV sages, any words of warning around the purchase of a polestar - this is where I'm heavily leaning now. Seems to be some anecdotal pieces online about avoiding those from 2021 and 2023 but anyone got any firsthand or well informed knowledge on the make? Thanks

There's a polestar thread where folks are fairly candid. I haven't heard anything problematic other than the fall in value from initial purchase prices was hard and harsh .

But that opens the door for great value for the second hand purchaser.

2019 Leaf with light damage at €5850, €5K might buy it. Small mileage https://www.donedeal.ie/view/41821122

That’s been in a few bangs!

Ignoring the physical damage, the passenger side is 50 shades of grey!

Looks relatively easily fixed though, i.e. nothing structural.
