Ros na Rún

I dont know if this is best in after hours or television section … or even culture!

i tuned in to have a look at Ros na Rún tonight on TG4 - I applaud English subtitles put on it it looked like it was getting interesting, but I gave up after 5 minutes due to having subtitles on to understand it, i have no desire to learn Irish (I am sorry if that upsets some people and yes seeing as I reside in Ireland I suppose I should have learnt Irish thats what I think sometimes, I know quite a few Irish words but not enough to understand a whole sentence said in Ros na Rún)

anyway I was just wondering a couple of things :

If they done this in English Speaking instead of Gaelic -wouldn't it gain more viewers than it already does because it must be very niche? (I am presuming there is more English speakers in Ireland on the whole than Irish Gaelic speakers apart from certain areas, like the Gaeltacht areas like connemara etc (but then I answer myself and say , well we have Fair City on RTE one and I watch that regularly so maybe if they did produce Ros na Rún in English then maybe there wouldn't be room for FC and Ros na Rún ? - but then they used to have glenroe the same time as Fair City for a while didn't they?

Do they ever have a situation where they have an English person in Ros na Rún (or person that only speaks English) - if so what do they do? - Have the person say an English sentence and then put the subtitles in Irish do they? is that how they do it?

Andy, The whole point of it is that it's TG4 and is Irish Language programming.

I've only watched an odd episode of Ros na Rún even though I don't speak Irish. I don't see the problem watching it with subtitles though. I watch a lot of European series and I'd prefer to watch with subtitles rather than have then dubbed into English.

I don't see the difference between watching a European series with subtitles and watching an Irish drama with subtitles.

yes I get you. I just found myself looking/concentrating more at the subtitles and missing what was happening on screen. But that could be my fault because i dont read books a lot if at all, got a short attention span for it and just get bored. - but saying that it would be terrible if the 'dubbed' it in English!

it's strange because i watch other soaps (Corrie, EE, FC ) all with the subtitles on because my hearing is not that brilliant a lot of the time, or if I hear something else i get distracted as to what they are saying on the screen, and I am comfortable looking at the English subtitles then and still following what is going on screen with them speaking English ,

but no i couldnt do that tonight with Ros na Rún strangely enough them speaking Irish with the English subtitles I just found too confusing personally.

You possibly hear more then you think with the English soaps, with the subtitles filling in the rest of what they are saying.

In my family house, I'm accursed with my deaf mother (who doesn't acknowledge her problem) and my younger brother who has a medical situation which lead to him losing half of his hearing. I hear everything, making me seemingly omnipotent.

"A car approaches…" sez I. (I just heard one of my sisters parking.)

"WOW!" said my mother and brother.

Last week, my brother got a hearing aid. He is amazed by what he can hear. Even touching his own clothes!! "And why does Ma have the telly so loud in the other room?!?"!

I've been saying that for years…

I might be remembering it wrong but I think he was filming a travel show around Ireland and his cameo in RNR was worked into it.
