I was at that Wasps game. And yes that was a highlight. In the long run it wasn't Jacks fault that Connacht laboured for years. There was just no other option to Jack. So I have mixed emotions on Jacks retirement. I know I was highly critical of him but Connacht rugby never provided a viable alternative.

These days we have Naughton and Gilbert who are excellent kickers, we have Ioane who really can break the gain line. But Jack has his qualities also which is why I was happy to see him start v Ulster.

Its hard to say what I feel about Jack retiring so I will just say thanks.

Big Jack Carty fan. There were seasons where himself and Farrell carried our attack kicking and screaming. Never gave anything less than 100% and like all players sometimes that was enough to get the wins and sometimes it wasn't. Thanks

    And Ireland though right?

    You said Leinster and Ireland.

Otherwise it's an obvious and complete backtrack.

Jack is such an interesting case. I met many players prior and post Connacht games and of all of them Jack was different. I was at many games where the abuse hurled from the sidelines towards Jack was beyond offensive. And I know I did post negative stuff about Jack over the years but it was always about what was best for Connacht.

Any time I came across Jack at the dressing rooms when heading out to the pitch he never acknowledged anyone while most players would just be thankful that you came along as a fan.

He was a strange kid. You kind of felt a bit sorry for him as he never really embraced what he had but instead struggled all those years. And 15 years is a lot of your life to be struggling particularly when those are your best years

So Lancaster is bringing in two new coaches next season (forward and back)

One more signing is to be announced

Ioane is staying for next season.

Thanks for the info, out of curiosity is this an online rumor or some other source?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,864 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

It's from a Reddit post about a season ticket holder Q&A.

Presumably the signing will be a lock.

Good news on Ioane, gives us another season to develop at 10, and he has teammates who can compensate for limitations.

Jimmy Duffy must be in the mix for forwards coach given he has just left Ulster to be closer to family in Galway.

    With

    33 confirmed as signed.

1 new signing, Ioane and Bohan from the academy leave us at 36.

West and Bealham almost certain to remain i'd say gives us 38.

Is there hope we might retain SHL and Aungier.

    I'd be happy!

33 includes Ioane, he's always been contracted but there was chatter around him nonetheless. I listed them out a couple of posts after that one.

From a whatsapp group, but directly from an attendee of the Q+A.

some interesting tidbits from prendergast boyle and moose that the toughest session they had all year was yesterday (so no let up after a great win)

Defensive sessions as 12 v 15 as well

    Thanks.

Yeah I thought that it was interesting listening to Lancasters press conference yesterday where he was positive about the match but also pointed out a number of areas where he thought they didn't do as well as they could. So great to see that he is really driving standards in the group

The thing about Connacht and Stu is that he came in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,966 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The thing about Stu and Connacht which is different to anywhere is that he came in here and was given the keys and he makes all the decisions.

He never had that anywhere else, people get in your way and disagree with you strongly enough to affect things.

It took a bit of time to get things right but we are seeing massive improvement already, much earlier than I expected.

I'm really excited about next season. Another offseason to improve things, players coming in that he wants.

I'm really excited about Frawley. We need a number 10, he knows him very well. I always said he never got a fair shot at the position with Leinster. I wasn't sure about him at the position but I'm very hopeful with him being brought here by a man that knows him well that he might be better than we all think.

With the Etienne Oosthuizen signing from the Lions now seemingly dead, does anyone have any idea who we're going with to replace Joyce?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,782 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

I liked Lancaster's press conference after the Ulster game where he said we reset to zero. For me we pick Ioane to start v Ospreys, Munster and Edinburgh as all of them have suspect defenses. Jack would not offer value off the bench in these 3 instances so I figure he won't be used.

That said I think Jack in SA is going to be a different matter. I think his ability to just get the ball away when you have big lads bearing down on you will be important.

Jack has a role to play yet in how our season goes

Connacht at 15/8 for a +15 victory is odds I certainly will take

Bit of a walk but the IDA park in Mervue tends to be quiet on weekends and evenings. (You could take the 401 bus down a couple of stops)

    This too shall pass.

It's really hard to predict but I think 50+ points might be required for top 8. Had a go at mapping it out but there's quite a few games that could go either way.

    image.png image.png

Bulls have the easiest fixture list and I think will pull away from this group and challenge for top 4. That leaves Cardiff, Munster, Lions, and ourselves competing for three spots, although Sharks could come into it if they win one of their away games.

Ultimately it's somewhat in our own hands. If we beat the three teams in this group we have a very strong chance, if we lose one it becomes a toss up, if we lose two we're probably done for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,177 ✭✭✭typhoony

So we have to beat the Ospreys, if we dont I think our season is done as I dont see us picking up enough points from the other 4 games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,308 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Jackman mentioned Aungier going to Munster again for next season in a podcast this week so it must all be done behind the scenes.

Don't expect SHL to stay at this stage but if they could keep him and get a good lock forward in it would be fantastic. Hansen back would nearly be like a new signing at this stage.

Interestingly I did the same for the top 8 and came up with the following (Leinster supporter for the record so maybe looking at it differently):

    Ulster

    64

    Glasgow

    63

    Stormers

    63

    Leinster

    61

    Bulls

    60

    Lions

    54

    Cardiff

    53

    Sharks

    52

    Munster

    50

    Connacht

    50

My 5-10 thinking is Bulls and Sharks win all remaining (a big if though for the Sharks), Lions win all remaining home games + 1 point on the road, Cardiff beat Scarlets, Ospreys and Stormers (not sure on the Stormers one), Connacht get nothing from SA trip but 5 points the rest, Munster beat Benetton and Lions with a LBP against Ulster.

Whatever way the games go, I think 50 at a minimum will be needed for top 8.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,864 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

That seems reasonable, only real difference seems to be you're more bullish on the SA teams and more down on Munster.

Sharks haven't won a league game outside of SA for almost a year so I don't back them to do much in the away games, but they always have the talent to pull it out of the bag.

Yeah I think Sharks are the real swing one. The fact they are playing Edinburgh and Ospreys away made me lean towards them, but very real chance they lose either of those and they won't be in the picture as I feel 50 points minimum will be needed.

I think with the fixtures my take on Munster is realistic to be honest. Can't see them getting anything this weekend, I would have them getting nothing at Connacht in Galway the way both are currently playing, and can see Ulster beating them (that's probably a 50/50 though). I think they have the hardest run in out of everyone with Benetton away not a gimme either. Lions at home is the game I think they will definitely win but that's the only one I would be confident in saying they will win.
