Built an app to fix what's broken about voucher sharing

(Mods: not trying to sell anything — the app is free to use for requesting vouchers. Just built something to solve problems I kept having and thought this was the right place to share it. Happy to remove if not appropriate)

    Hey all,

I've been using grocery store vouchers for a while, and like a lot of people, I end up with vouchers I can't use before they expire. I looked at what's out there for sharing them and found the existing solutions still have pain points:

    • No way to get your voucher "back" — you can give away your vouchers, but once you share them, your loyalty points are gone. There's no mechanism to still earn points from a voucher you're letting someone else use. From what I've seen, a lot of shoppers want exactly this — the ability to get vouchers returned via their loyalty card.
    • Some platforms require your store login — you sign in with your actual store account credentials so it can sync your vouchers automatically. That means a third party has full access to your loyalty account. As one Reddit commenter put it: "Sharing your credentials with another app is a massive security vulnerability."
    • Phone number exposure — some platforms require sharing your phone number with strangers, which a lot of people aren't comfortable with.
    • No real accountability — if someone regularly uploads dodgy vouchers, it's up to the platform operator to manually clean up or suspend accounts. There's no built-in reputation system that automatically limits bad actors.

So I built VoucherRelay to solve these problems:

    • Voucher return via loyalty card (LEND mode) — when you share a voucher, the person using it scans YOUR loyalty card at checkout. You get the loyalty points, they get the discount. Your voucher didn't go to waste — it gets relayed back to you.
    • Direct share — want to share a voucher with a specific person? Send them a link via WhatsApp, iMessage, or any messenger.
    • Geofenced reveal — the barcodes can only be revealed when you're physically at a store. This eliminates voucher redistribution — sharers can be much more confident their voucher is used by the person they shared it with and who genuinely needs it.
    • Credit score system — good behaviour (successful shares, reliable usage) earns credit, while bad behaviour (dodgy vouchers, no-shows, etc) costs it. Low scores automatically limit access to the platform, and high scores get priority when vouchers are assigned. The system self-regulates — no manual policing needed.
    • Dispute resolution — if something goes wrong, there's a proper process instead of "contact support".
    • No phone number or store login required — sign in with Google or Apple, no personal details shared with other users.
    • Free for users — if you just want to use vouchers and get discounts, you never pay. The subscription is only for people who want to share, and the loyalty points earned from lending vouchers will likely cover the cost.

What I need: People to test the app for 2-3 weeks. I'll be sharing my own real vouchers during the beta, so you can jump straight in as a user. If you'd like to test sharing your own vouchers too, you're welcome to! Just indicate when you sign up for beta testing.

    What's in it for you:

    • Free LEND vouchers during the beta period
    • Shape a product that's being built for exactly this use case
    • Early access before public launch

    What I need from you:

    • A relatively recent Android phone or iPhone
    • Shop at a supported store occasionally
    • Try claiming and using a voucher at least once during the beta
    • Tell me what's broken or confusing (a quick message is fine)

Interested? Join beta testing at voucherrelay.ie

VoucherRelay is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any grocery store. All store names and trademarks belong to their respective owners.

Great idea but what stops someone screenshotting someone else’s valueclub card number and just using it whenever they want again?

Good question! I assume you meant screenshotting the voucher and save for later. There are several layers of protection:

    1. It's a violation of the Terms & Conditions, which can lead to account suspension
    2. The app keeps system reocrds on screenshots and screen recordings
    3. The barcode can only be revealed when you're physically at a supported store — so it's not something you can do from your couch
    4. After revealing, there's a tight usage confirmation window — if they don't confirm usage in time, the system flags it and their credit score takes a significant hit
    5. If they give a false confirmation, the voucher sharer will find out and can open a dispute — the bad actor won't be able to provide a valid shopping receipt as proof
    5. Any misuse tanks their credit score
    6. A low credit score limits or blocks their access to the platform

So while no system is 100% bulletproof, the effort-to-reward ratio makes it not worth trying!
