    OLLLLLIIIEEEEE.

I'll give Rogers the assist, but it was more a keeper error

    Ollie!

He needed that and we needed that 2nd goal which will hopefully see them put the game to bed.

Ollie, no time to think, just react = goal

Nice one. Very happy with that result. Showed the style of play we are used to. The lads being back is excellent and more so with the games coming up.

Wait weren't we terrible for weeks?!

5pts ahead of 5th with 7 games to go (only 1pt off 3rd). In the last 8 of a European competition.

Our next 5 games: Bologna x2, N.Forest, Sunderland, Fulham.

    Feeling positive once more :)

Huge weekend. Don’t think anyone would have convinced me that Villa would lose to United and Chelsea and still be 5 points ahead of Liverpool and 6 ahead of Chelsea, but here we are.

Great performance, all of a sudden, confident, controlled, like the good old days.

And incredibly, after our run of losses to Chelsea and Utd, we're back to 6 points clear of Chelsea in 6th, and Chelsea's next 2 matches after the break are City and Utd.

7 games to go, 6 points above 6th, 5 above 5th - gotta have hope again

It's a really competitive league, those are three big big points. We're running out of games, hopefully that's the start of a run, we have people coming back from injury and also into form at the right time.

Only saw last 10 of first half and all second, but thought Barkley was outstanding, was worried when he and McGinn were called ashore but they saw it out

Well worked free kick for our first loved Onana’s tackle for our 2nd good performance we were purring again

So 14 points from the last 7 games guarantees CL. As Liverpool and Chelsea play each other both can’t get to 68 points, and nobody below them can reach that number either. Probably a lot less required in reality. A very good weekend for us.

Delighted with yesterday, played with attacking intent from the off and it made for an enjoyable watch. It was more like how we started games a few years ago. Plenty of good performances, I was hoping Maatsen would start but Digne played really well and Sancho was good again. Ollie was a menace and Tielemans back so a great way to sign off before the break.

Noticed we played a lot wider than the past few months, probably as a result of their back 5 and it worked great. Hopefully we start to see more variation like this going forward as it's what really got us through that great run earlier in the season.

More longer range shots being hit which is good to see, always brings the potential of mistakes and it Ollie is able to poach we're flying.

Not just are we getting our midfielders sans Kamara back but Onana and Barkely have also found form and put fitness concerns behind them. Perhaps it was that I keep getting shown our 2nd goal on social media anytime I open my phone but Onana finally started playing like a 50m record signing yesterday and when you add in Youri and the fact that I honestly think McGinn makes those around him up their effort I really think we have a great chance of picking up the points we need going forward. In particular games against the likes of Sunderland, Fulham and Burnley who all might have nothing to play for when we face off against them.

Yes agree With respect to McGinn and Tielemans, it was similar when Grealish came back from injury spells the saying ‘a rising tide lifts all boats ‘ couldn’t be more appropriate

Can’t imagine a world where 9 points doesn’t do it. I’d be very surprised if Chelsea managed 15 points out of 21 from Man City, Man United, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham at home and Brighton, Liverpool and Sunderland away.

Those 2 results against Newcastle and Everton over the last week were very unexpected to me, and really took the emphasis off Villa’s collapse.

Villa in for Mbaye from PSG according to Sky Sports.

    https://www.skysports.com/football/live-blog/11095/13025491/aston-villa-transfer-news-rumours-and-gossip-live-updates-and-latest-on-deals-signings-loans-and-contracts?postid=11393569#liveblog-body

If he's as highly rated as suggested then I'd assume the price to be upwards €40m.

Nothing I’ve seen from Villa’s transfer strategy since Emery came in would suggest to me that the bulk of the transfer budget is going on an 18 year old without much first team experience.

The type of signings we need are long term quality players I’m probably missing a couple but can only think of Torres, Rogers and Tielemans who fit that criteria under Emery. Unfortunately financial restrictions have not allowed him to build that quality squad and yes poor recruitment plays a part.

Realistically, if Villa qualify for CL and the plan is to continue trying to do that, then probably need to be targeting 22-24 year olds who are old enough to hit the ground running, without being the same difficult age profile that a lot of the squad currently is.

Year by year some of the lads that we have grown to love are going to have Watkins years where it likely doesn’t return afterwards.

Sancho leaves pitch in sling with club friendly now at Elche.

Draw at the half way mark

Probably fortunate that the game is towards the start of the break. No game for 2 weeks yet.

No doubt it will be season ended knowing our luck. He was just beginning to show a bit of form too.

There also isn’t really much of an equivalent to him in the squad. Rogers and Buendia are different players.
