Loved them back in the day, wouldn't mind a remake tbh. They've been eclipsed by modern games, but if you're into the older stuff they're worth a whirl.

Yes unfortunately. Real try hard edgelord stuff. I wouldn't bother unless you want to play a stealth game with bad mechanics that gets gorier the longer you hold the X button down and it's not even that gory anyway.

I think at the time it was quite 'edgy/gory' but most of it is fairly tame by modern standards. If I remember correctly its also a very darkly lit game which made playing it a bit of a challenge.

One positive is that Brian Cox seemed to have a blast doing the voice-over in the first one.

Oh definitely a product of their time, but as ye said the gory edgy stuff gave it some spotlight. Back then I committed to most games as they were few and far between. Pretty sure I rented Manhunt.

I rented it from Xtra-vision as a teenager and was bored of it by the time it went back. Recollection is that it was extremely repetitive.

Walk behind someone. Hold x. Repeat for 8 hours. Do you want to put a plastic bag over someone's face it wait longer to punch them in the face while choking them. And the answer is always the shortest one so you don't prolong your own suffering.

It did have microphone support that was very sensitive which was interesting for 20 minutes. You had to watch your breathing and could use your voice to get enemies attention.

Oh **** yeah remember ps had those socom headsets, manhunt was great if you were a teenager, very of it's time ridiculous plot and poor, sequel was woeful almost certain I have both somewhere in the house

I was too old I guess but I suppose if it hit me at the same time Mortal Kombat hit me I'd probably have played it loads and declared it a classic. Guess that first MK game is dreadful but I played it so much.

Lords of the Fallen is coming to PS Plus Essential in April. Its gotten way better since a rough launch with regular updates I think?

Been looking for a good Souls game since beating the excellent Lies of P last year.

Beat Ghost Of Yotei over the weekend. What a great game that overstayed its welcome just a little bit. The first 2 hours in particular were incredible. Not sure I'll do all the side stuff and Legends mode as I have Resident Evil Requiem staring at me waiting to be installed and played (thanks to Zero Cool).

It’s ok. Nowhere near the standard of Lies of P. The gimmick of the game is that there is 2 worlds you can go between which will allow you access areas as one world will have a bridge etc. The exploration is quite good and the map all loops around to the main area (like Dark Souls 1 ) but the combat can feel a bit floaty and if you are anyway skilled in soukslikes you will smash through the bosses who are very generic and easy

There is sequel coming soon. I’m skeptical as the CEO is a clown who tries to be ‘anti woke’ and advertises that the game will allow you to select only male or female body types and that the female characters will be sexy (cringe)

Seems the Super Mario Wonder Switch 2 expansion content is really good going by some reviews I've seen.

New flagship phone for the first time in 7 years, doesnt sound like mobile gaming has come along much, no interest in pay to win slop, has there been anything decent released for phones in the last while? I have hundreds of hours in Slay the Spire already.

Please dont say Balatro I found it unbelievably dull and overrated.

I have an S25 Ultra (mistake, don't recommend), and tbh any game worth playing would be infinitely better on console/TV, so i can't bring myself to play them at worse quality on a significantly smaller screen (compared to a 55" C2) and horrible controls unless you buy those controller accessories or an actual controller, which then requires somewhere to put the phone to use the controller...

This is also the reason I don't like the Switch. Worse experience for the same/similar price. No thanks!

Think my next phone will be flagship but the basic one, because I appreciate the speed of modern tech but the extra for what the Ultra has vs the base S25 is not worth it. May even go back to a button phone, getting sick of ads, ads, ads, ads, ads. See some Smart fridges showing ads now too. Ugh. /rant

Vampire survivors or gwent have been my go too, flights feel so much quicker with survivors

It's all gone very gacha heavy.

On the one hand these gacha game budgets have gone through the roof where they can be on par with PC/console games in terms of playability and writing.

Anyway, free games worth checking out:

Pixel Puzzle from Konami. A picross rip off but a damn good one and best of all it's free with very non-intrusive adverts. I'm still playing this since it was released.

Thronglets from Netflix if you have a subscription. It's pretty short and more an adventure game but it ties in with the Black Mirror series and it's a load of fun while it lasts.

Into the Breach is free from Netflix and works brilliantly as a mobile game.

Groove Coaster 2 is an exceptional music game. Free to start but with dlc packs you can, shock horror, actually own if you want to play more.

    Paid games:

Lara Croft Go and Hitman Go are excellent games worth your time and can go for a good price.

Also i'd recommend the android/apple version of Final Fantasy Tactics. It's the best looking version of the game and the touch controls really suit the game. It helps that it's the secret best Final Fantasy. An oldie but a goodie.

I heard good things about the Voice of Cards games but not played them myself.

Now for Gacha and I actually have a recommendation here:

    Wizardry Variants Daphne

It's pretty new so looks quite good. It's a hardcore dungeon crawling RPG but takes a lot of cues from modern dungeon crawlers like Etrian Odyssey, especially from the third main story content drop onwards. It even has a time travelling mechanic later on that works really well.

What I like about this game is that it's very fair and perfectly playable and beatable for a free player. Even at that the gacha pull rates are quite good. It's really not a mean game.

I'd go so far as to say it would be a minor classic if released as a steam indie game. The music, presentation and dark fantasy writing are exceptionally good.

I've managed to beat the first 3 main story content drops without paying and I've not really started the fourth. I had trouble getting the true ending of the third content drop but it's more a bonus and I'm going to return to finish that off since they raised the level cap with the fourth content drop.

Anyway it's a really good game for free players. I like to throw the devs a bit of money every so often as I was having a lot of fun. It's also surprisingly deep and presents a very old school challenge, prepare to die a lot. There's perma death but it's entirely avoidable by just not being impatient and waiting for your dead characters cool down timer to get about 50% before you revive them (although revival costs are very expensive in terms of gold!). You also get three chances to revive if you die in battle and you can just wait 4 hours per chance if you run out of them.

Actually Im going to recommend Super Mario Run as well. For whatever reason it gets a bad rap from some people but it's a paid game that you get to keep and it's pretty much a full new Mario game with a brilliant twist on the endless runner genre, especially if you go for all the special coins on each level, it does some really interesting stuff with those.

In to the breach is fantastic. Free on netflix. Also get the Epic mobile app, it gives free mobile games similar to how the store gives free HD games.

I find it funny all the vitriol being thrown at Square Enix by gamers. Sure some of their big budget games are in a limbo with the main FF series not knowing what the hell it wants to be and Kingdom Hearts both sucking and blowing (but that is true to the series I suppose).

However if you look at their smaller game releases, square Enix are absolutely cooking. They are not only releasing a lot of games, but the majority of them are excellent and interesting games. Honestly it feels like PS1/2 era square Enix are back.

Hitman Deluxe edition is 50% off at 44.99 Euro on xbox store.....So tempted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,080 ✭✭✭✭The Iron Giant

Well worth it, the sheer volume of content is so impressive.

The only thing I'd say is I'd only recommend it if you're happy to replay levels in different ways as that's really a huge part of it - taking targets out differently, different methods, roguelite challenges etc. If you blast through each level once and never again, it's not worth it.

I think thats why I never got into the Hitman games. I played 1 and 2 back in the day. Used to wonder why people loved it, but i was a 1 and done guy (still am tbh) so the idea of doing the same level over and over just a bit differently never appealed to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,416 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Nah there's a lot of fun to be had in the Hitman games of following the different threads to complete the kills in different ways. The first few tries through a level you'll find some nuggets of info, but even when you've killed the target once, playing more and doing more investigation and trial & error means those nuggets can lead to far more creative ways to have done the job.

Once you've done the proper research, playing again and doing certain things in the right order means the kills can go off without you even being near the targets. A true Hitman who was never there and disappears like a fart in the wind. That's where the fun in the game lies.

Anyone can just shoot a f*cker and run away. That's no fun.

Great stuff thanks Retr0 and everyone else. I just dont understand how the offerings are so weak still, you'd think indie devs would be all over it even if the studios arent interested.

I played manhunt. A good game and I don't understand how it was banned.

The warrior's however is a better classic imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,339 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I had the wii version of Manhunt that I got from some French dude on ebay, using the nunchucks was interesting to say the least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 553 ✭✭✭Anois_

I had a burned copy of the warriors that never worked so never played it. Yes I was foolish back then playing ripped games. I was young but I have now for many many years paid for games. As I said I was young and didn't realise I was ripping off the game studio's.

I never modded my Switch 1 for that exact reason.

There was a race to the bottom with price. Indie devs are just sick of mobile. The Monument Valley devs produced one of the best mobile games ever made and then got harassed for releasing an expansion for the game for 1 or 2 euro because it wasn't free.

You can't survive on mobile if your game isn't free and to have a free game that makes money you need a a game with constant updates and always online servers which require massive investment. So all the gacha games now have massive budgets and honestly they are well made but you need MMO levels of time commitment to them. Indie has just disappeared off the platform as even if you sell a game for a euro the mobile market will say it costs too much.
