Hi folks, I've a Mira Elite 2 (prob 24 years old or so) that hadn't been used for a couple of years due to an issue with the sealing of the shower box/cubicle (we've been using a different shower in the house, in case you were wondering).

On coming back home one day we found this leak on the ceiling directly under the shower tray.

We checked upstairs and we found the shower box full of splashes from waist height down and the tray soaking wet. Nobody had been in the house. The cord was in the "off" position.

What could have been the cause of the sudden water discharge (it seemed to go from the body of the unit, rather than from the shower head) and would it be something easily fixed with a bit of DIY? Is there anything else I should check?

    Thanks,

Here's the thing, even if the Mira Elite leaked then it can only leak into the shower. It can't cause water stains in the ceiling below. This can only happen if the tiles, grout or trap are failing. It's not really anything to do with your electric shower.

Their first line pointed out that they're aware the shower tray is leaking.

All the sealant was removed when the box had to be completely dismantled years ago, so it's not waterproof. Why this wasn't addressed is another story.

Thanks and this would normally have a logic but my problem is the sudden discharge of water from the Mira. It seemed to have come from the body rather than the head, but as I said I don't know if the very long inactivity provoked it or affected the unit in any way.

They stopped making the Mira Elite 2 in 2006. The average life span of an electric shower is 10 years or so. It should have its own dedicated isolation valve. If it doesn't then you can remove the shower itself and blank the pipe.

If the pipe going into the shower freezes then the water inside can increase to as much as 30 bar. The Shower can cope with 3/4 of a bar. The increase in pressure can cause something like this. It resolves itself when the pressure reduces.

Excellent, thank you. I should have added: it only happened that one time.

It really can't be anything else. Leaks don't fix themselves so if there was a leak then it would still be leaking. Increased water pressure is the only thing that explains it.

You will ask yourself why it's never happened before with even colder conditions. There really isn't any answer to that. It can happen after 20 years for no real reason. Having said that, if you were away then the entire house would be colder because no heating on
