Mobile Home Broadband

Hi, It's quite a while since I used boards.ie so if I am raising an issue that has been aired already, please excuse me and maybe steer me to where I might get an answer.

I live in Dublin but have a mobile home in Wicklow in a Holiday home park that opens mid-March to end- September. We have a good broadband service at the moment from Imagine but there are two roblems: (a) the service is charged (at €60 per month) for all twelve months of the year, i.e., we pay for the five months "closed season" when the service is not required/used; and (b) of greater concern, Imagine have said the service we use, described as "fixed wireless" is being discontinued from July. I contacted a company in Wexford called "Whizzy"; they have a service tailored for holiday home users, a one-off annual charge of €250, but they do not cover the area I'm in. I have looked at Starlink - residential, not the roaming option aimed at motor homes on the move - but, again, that seems to be a 12 month charge if I haven't misread it. I would love to know what other people have used in similar situations. Thanks.

Depends how much data you are planning to use, could hotspot your phone if light use or just get a PAYG and dock

What do you use the bb for?

You could get your own 4G/5G router from CeX, Amazon, Currys etc. and a prepay SIM from either eir, Vodafone or Three. You might need to try all three networks in the location to see which is performing the best for you. All three networks offer unlimited 5G data for €20pm. Going prepay should allow you to stop paying for the months you don't want.

Before getting a SIRO connection fibre connection, I used a GoMo SIM (€14.99/month), in a 5G router (2nd hand from CeX) at home for many years, worked fine but of course depends on the signal quality for GoMo (Eir) where your mobile home is.

Actually make that €12.99/month if you order before the end of March.

If you buy your own Starlink (either standard or mini) you can pause the service at any stage and it will only cost €5.01 per month (recently increased from €5 (weirdest increase I've ever seen by a provider)) when you are not using it and can be resumed very quickly again via their app/website

Put the holiday park address in here and see which providers have "Very Good" 4G / 5G coverage and give them a try:

    https://coveragemap.comreg.ie/map

Unlike GoMo or Clear Mobile, 48 allows you to switch off auto-renewal for the off-season allowing you up to six months of no activity before suspending your account. Total cost for six months unlimited broadband would be €78.

A big issue with using mobile broadband is that it might be great during the off-season but once the high-season is in full swing and the holiday park and the surrounding area are really busy, the mobile signal can be non-existent and you'll have no data
