You'd swear with how some are talking about him we've had 10 amazing players and an amazing coach all being dragged down by Salah this season.

And there were some people actually comparing Saka to Salah a couple of years ago. Saka would be only good enough to clean Salah's boots.

As far as next season goes and who we replace/what system changes we make….it all depends on who the manager is. If Alonso comes in we're actually not in a bad position to give his 3atb set up a go, it would mean bringing in another CB or two but other than that all the pieces are here already imo.

If Slot stays or Alonso comes in I think we will be going to a 3-5-2 with Isak and Ekitike up front.

The key signings now will be CB.

Virg cannot play every minute again next year. We have Jeremy Jacquet signed up but will he be going straight in as a starter? Leoni will be coming back from injury but I wouldn't be surprised if he goes out on loan for the start of the season.

Konate raised his game for a few games after his father passed away but recent performances have gone back to his erratic performances where he cannot be trusted to give a good game.

I think he will go in the summer and I really hope they have Schlotterbeck or Bastoni sounded out. If Slot is staying he may also go back for Geertruida.

If we keep our midfield players we have Wirtz/Gravenberch/Dom in the midfield with Frimpong/Bradley and Kerkez/Rio(?) out wide. We would still need to keep MacAlliser or Curtis for one more season.

Absolutely but we're not going to get a like for like. We've just signed two strikers for a load of money. Can't see us splashing big on another but could see a winger coming in maybe. It might not be someone who'll score a lot like Salah but will be more of a provider I would think. It's like when other big players left: we didn't think we'd replace them and we didn't like-for-like. Torres, Suarez, Gerrard….

Just hope we can add more quality to the team in the summer and have more balance. We've been very unbalanced this season. Kerkez has improved. If Frimpong stays fit he'd be a great asset on the wing. If we have a number 6, Grav and Szobo could be more of a force going forward. There's a lot of positives in our squad but I feel they haven't been used correctly this season and also we've had bad luck with injury. Isak, Bradley and Frimpong staying fit all year could have had a big impact on our season.

We're threadbare at CB for right now but I'd like to think we're somewhat set up for the future at least with Jacquet, Leoni and a buyback on Quansah.

Sod off with your disrespect BS. I suggested a gold statue didn't I? I'm entitled to my opinion as much as you are to yours.

Salah has been dreadful this season, seemingly being almost undroppable despite some of the most wretched performances recorded in a red shirt. Take off your red tinted glasses and rewatch any league game this season - he's a lonely figure on the right doing nothing and the odd ball he gets, he loses.

This is what our squad depth is currently looking like for next season (players in bold are those I'm not positive will be here)

    GK: Alisson, Mamardashvili

    RB: Frimpong, Bradley

CB: VVD, Leoni, Jacquet, Konate, Gomez

    LB: Kerkez, Tsimikas

CM: Szoboszlai, MacAllister, Gravenberch, Jones, Endo, Nyoni

FW: Isak, Ekitike, Wirtz, Gakpo, Ngumoha, Chiesa

Some of these roles are fluid (ie Wirtz can play midfield, Frimpong can move up the wing) but generally this is how I'd define them.

Why include Konate who's contract is up this summer but exclude Robbo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,221 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Idk it's just a list of players who might be here, I think it's pretty certain Robbo is gone considering what was happening in January whereas Konate's future is more up in the air to me.

You're also including Tsimikas coming back from loan but not Harvey Elliott?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,221 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Elliott I just forgot tbh, though he'd be bolded too as based on the Villa deal it does seem like we wanted him gone permanently.

Allison just extended his contract a few weeks ago, no way he will be leaving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,538 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Elliot could well stay of Slot leaves and would be a very good option in Alonso systems as a Wirtz backup.

I think the club had the option of extending it and took the option. It doesn't mean he still couldn't leave of course!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,538 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Makes a lot of sense. He needed to be playing week in and week out to develop so all going well he may well be back at Liverpool.

A sad day seeing Salah announce he is leaving the club. Despite this desperate season he has given great service to the club since he arrived but as the saying goes "all good things come to an end". I always thought when he signed the 2 year extension to the contract that he would only see a year of it and then would move on to probably a Saudi club to finish out his career and a few bob for the club alas it is not to be.

I don't think there is a like for like replacement for Salah, I think he was just one of those one off signings that when he came everything worked out for him. But as we have seen in the past legends leave and new players come in. Some rebuilding job to be done from defense to attack, I know Allison has signed a new deal but he is getting more injury prone and there are questions about Mamardashvili especially when the ball is at his feet, I would hope to see us sign another good keeper that will push Mamardashvili for his spot. Defence needs some real work done to it in all positions, we need cover for both right and left back and then we need replacements at CB for VVD and Konate. I think the drop off in Konate is down to lack of competition for the position and probably the same could be said for other positions in the team, maybe the players are too comfortable in their positions and do need that competition to keep the hungry and competitive.

Midfield again like the defence needs work, we need a proper central defensive midfielder who can sit in front of the defence and break up the attacks, then we need another right winger as Frimpong is injury prone and also for competition, same on the left, actually I think we need 2 left wingers, Gakpo just isn't doing it, in the centre I think we have enough in Szoboszlai, MacAllister, Gravenberch, Jones and even the returning Elliot.

Upfront we have a lot of talent and options. I would be looking at a big season from Isak next season once he gets a proper pre-season under his belt but if Sweden qualify for the world cup then that could hamper that.

Then the question is Slot the man to do it? I know he wants a small squad but is that really possible when you could be competing on 4 fronts. It might be if we don't qualify for the Champions league but I think there is a run in this team, maybe my misplaced loyalty or something but if we can win the majority of the last 7 matches then I think it can be done especially if we can beat Villa and Utd, I know a big ask considering what we have seen but they are capable of it.

When i heard last night i wasnt that shocked but his goodbye video hit me, im a sentimental sucker anyway (fowler re signing is a core memory!).

A genuine superstar that gave us so many amazing memories, we were good for him and he was great for us, thanks for everything Mo and good luck on your next adventure, i somehow don't think it will be saudi just yet!

It's obviously not the time for a deep dive but underneath those stats are four league goals from open play

Just read an article there that Isak is looking to get out of the club and has asked his agent to find a move away from the club preferably to Barcelona. Could be a load of BS but it doesn't help matters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,539 ✭✭✭✭rob316

That sounds like the biggest load of transfer BS I've ever read

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,904 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

He doesn’t need to be replaced, he needs to be dropped before he leaves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭jesuisjuste

Wow, he'd be like the new Anelka if true, although I would say it's probably just BS

Xabi Alonso is expected to arrive in the summer. Michael Edwards has kept the line open ever since. Even during the successful 2024/25 season under Slot, who had taken over from Jürgen Klopp. Alonso’s agent, Iñaki Ibáñez recently confirmed concrete enquiries. [Axel Hesse, BILD]
