what are we saying about the midfield lineup so if vale is rumoured to be in ? i'd have stuck browne in. or do we think vale is gonna be further ahead?

That's probably too open for such a big game for HH to try from the start. While he did play Gylfi Sigurdsson in a midfield two, though I think that was mostly when he was co-manager, and Azaz did drop deeper in midfield last time. From the start of a game I couldn't see him going that attack minded.

I wonder how fit Ogbene is.

I like him a lot though and prefer to start him though.

If the rumours turn out true about Vale it could be him and Azaz from the start supporting Parrott. Though I wonder would that let Parrott a little isolated up top. I've never seen Vale play so don't know what he's like.

Ogbene's pace is a good asset in that role and provides another long ball option in behind so defenders need to be careful about that.

It's a tough call. These potential two games (not overlooking the Czechs) are the biggest games in a long time. Yes we've went to two Euros in the last 15 years but the WC is the holy grail.

There must be some amount of pressure surrounding HHs decisions given a win not only brings you one step closer but also brings a home final for the deciding game.

I'd prefer to start with Ogbene if possible.

    He frightens defenders.

Vale is an unknown to the Czechs so that could be an advantage.

From what I've seen of him, he's technical but lacks pace.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,675 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Yeah Ogbene for me too. Do you want him to start and cause issues with his pace, or coming on late in the game when you're potentially losing and the Czechs could be playing a bit deeper and tighter leaving no space.

I think he'd be a brave man to go with Azaz and one other, probably Molumby, as his midfield two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,754 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

If Ogbene is fit, he has to start. He draws fouls, wins frees, gets lads booked. If Czech play 3-5-2, it pins back their LWB.

AFAIK he's played a few under 21 games. Not sure exactly how fit he is.

The idea of a box midfield of Molumby - Azaz - Schmodic - Vale is that it's more technical and can keep the ball.

Might be too big a game to be experimenting though when we have a tried and trusted game plan.

I’d consider that box more attacking than technical. Vale apart.

This is the best definite bit. The anticipation. Anything could happen. It may not, and Ireland lose as the bookies predicted, but they could win, and then things really will hit a fever pitch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,080 ✭✭✭✭Zeek12

Yup. Would be very risky to go with Azaz + Molumby in the middle.

Surely someone like Taylor will start there……which I think was the case in the Portugal game at home.

And let's hope Ogbene is fit to start.

I'd still kinda expect Knight and Molumby in the middle - though Taylor has been playing a bit more of a defensive midfield role for Ipswich this season alright, so could well sneak in ahead of one of the ja(y)sons.

Heimir has regularly played these sort of hybrid formations, is there any chance he goes with a 4-4-1-1? Manning and Vale out wide with Azaz behind Parrott. Maybe O'Shea left back and Manning being the hybrid player that could make it become a back five.

Not what I'd expect or necessarily want to see but I don't see Vale starting if we go with a back 5.

Ogbene's pace is one of our biggest weapons and needs to be used correctly. If he's not fit, maybe that's off the bench when the game becomes more stretched. Although from what I can see he just hasn't been selected rather than injured, so maybe he is fit enough to start.

The lack of other pacy options to make up for Ogbene's lack of game time is the one slightly odd thing with the squad selection… with Festy suspended, I wouldn't have minded Kasey Mcateer in there for that.

Sometimes even if one player is not as good all round as another, they might have a single attribute you really need that can be invaluable — and raw pace is just one of those things you really want to be able to call upon if needed.

Johnston a huge loss - he mightnt be lightning quick like Ogbene/Festy bit he is able to beat a man and drag players over to him.

I wouldnt start Vale in a huge game like this, he has no experience of senior international football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 311 ✭✭Kerry_2008

Have we any real pace in the squad apart from ogbebe? I know nothing about vale but from the descriptions I've read here and elsewhere pace wouldn't be his strongest asset.

god this is going to be nerve wracking. a miracle if we get a result, i just hope we don't capitulate early like we did against hungary at home. or maybe it's better they score first because that seems to wake us up. who knows. bloody hell though.

hopefully though we are just solid at the back and dont gift any chances/goals. We are all talking about attack, but we need to be solid at the back..hopefully we have worked on set pieces aswell this week and can target those.

Here we go. It’s great being involved in another big game that matters. We missed that for a few years. Can’t wait for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,754 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

I find it funny there is way more hype for this game than Denmark playoff in 2017, even though we were just 90 minutes away from the WC then.

Has society changed or are we just starved of success and something to get excited for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,548 ✭✭✭Unearthly

I’d imagine the thrill of the Hungary win has brought back a lot of hope again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 645 ✭✭✭CONSI

I think the hype has grown around this game because if we win its a home playoff, I'd imagine if we win the build up will be phenomenal to Tuesdays game, but as someone mentioned, the soccer fans have been starved of something to get excited about for ages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 507 ✭✭✭DireD

this 100%. winning the hungary game the way we did is basically a 1 out of 10000 kind of thing. absolutely ridiculous when you look back. like if we'd stumbled into a playoff after losing away to armenia morale would definitely be low.

im finding myself being a bit too optimistic after the hungary result aswell but if we cant be a bit delusional then whats the point

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,675 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

    1000%

After the Hungary game and how we won it I was buzzing for a full week and couldn't tell you how many times I rewatched highlights of it.

For 2017 it was nice we beat Wales away to make the playoffs but we started that campaign in great form and had a real shot at topping the group. I think how they started and how they ended plays a part in the enthusiasm for each playoff.

2026 it's a mircle we made it, 2017 you're a bit disappointed that we threw away a great start and needed a win in the final game to secure the playoff.

Nothing like the buzz the day of a big Ireland game. The event itself is usually an anti-climax but still.

That Denmark play-off came less than 18 months after the highlight of making the knock out stages of Euro 2016. We were in a much better place then. And we probably took Play-offs for granted a little bit.

We are definitely more starved now.

Just being in a Play off again is hugely exciting and the manner in which we got here - seemingly dead and buried until winning those last 2 group games against the odds - has generated a fantastic buzz.😀
