God, would it kill the test providers to hire an editor?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,935 ✭✭✭Cape Clear

Apparently, but if you email them they will give you details of previous comps but they may need a push. I requested a copy of my test results from the 2024 EO comp. First they refused but they weren't long supplying it when I mentioned making a data access request.

They are obliged to keep data on competitions for a number of years. It was laughable that they first refused to supply data for a comp that is currently still live.

I'll have to be honest and admit I have read as little as possible of the instructions/ information emails on the tests. There's simply too much info there.

Yes, I agree with you. I royally bodged that, filing just 4 sentences for Task 2. I thought I was being efficient and showing confidence in my judgment, but the instructions were clear: at least 100 words for each task.

I failed to properly familiarise myself with the brief, so I'm most likely out of the running now. My own fault.

I'm lowkey curious what some of you wrote because idk how you managed to answer task 2 in less than 100 words

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 200 ✭✭Capyberna

I got about 108 words for it (second part) but don’t feel confident either that I’ll pass the written. Of what I wrote, it was in point format and not very developed. My first part (written response) met the word count and was higher but still between being rusty on emails and thinking of what to say I’m not so confident!

Since the comp has now closed, it kinda threw me in the written about the guy who wanted an extension but at the same time had left it till the last few days to contact the department about his personal circumstances. But also the department should’ve had people dedicated to responding to those last minute queries. Like how can you say how many days extension he should get?

Timing would’ve been the issue here rather than not having anything to write.

I imagine people struggled with timing between having to read the information a couple of times, not being able to think quickly about what to write, and not being able to copy and paste or use spell check.

Yes, there was a copy and paste button there but I found it very awkward to use and lost time compared to just using the mouse or keyboard short cuts.

Found the written very handy but the layout of it from the test assessors is a joke. Should be two separate boxes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 99 ✭✭Glitteringstar

I spoke about teamwork, communication, time management and customer service. The jist of my response for task 2 was reminding any of the COs that reported to me that they can ask me any questions if they are unsure, working as team etc and that the situation could have been avoided prior, before it being escalated to me (the EO).

I took the approach that an EO (me) could grant extensions, so from what I remember the person had mentioned they could get a doctors note, so I requested that in the email and gave a deadline to have it in by, before granting the extension. The standard waffle before the main bit of the email and then more waffle in the closing..

Agreed, if they’re going to be strict about the two separate word limits there should be two separate boxes. I’m pretty sure I wrote about 120 for the the second part, but I was wrecked by the end, so a small part of me is worried because it would be very easy to miscalculate and be a few under

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 200 ✭✭Capyberna

I pretty much said the same thing. I also said provide the CO with the information of the terms or whatever in relation to the competition to read, because they didn’t give in correct information.

I also said to inform my manager there has been an issue with regards to no responses in the department to queries, to make a suggestion that certain CO’s should be allocated responsibility of responding to these emails.

I also found it very awkward that I kept having to scroll up to see the email and the background to the scenario. Would’ve been better if the screen could be split.

:) your reply there is 123 words! I'm sure you were great.

I am just glad its over now. Fingers crossed for everyone!

Very easily…I spent way too long on the first part, reading over my email reply and editing, then re-reading the question again to make sure I addressed everything in the email, too much to read. Then editing and re-reading again to make sure it sounded professional, grammer and spelling. Having to scroll up and down was a killer. And also especially when you get a complete brain block. I did and wasted about 5-6 mins trying to get my brain going again. I just had to lol. Got over the word count for part 2 eventually, but a lot of waffle. Overall wordcount around 370 I think.

Wondering the same myself I was panicking about the time I never checked how many words I had for the second part!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 200 ✭✭Capyberna

I cut and paste in the last 10 seconds to check the word count 😅😅

This was a great idea! I might email PAS and ask them, however I cant see them telling me as they probably have hundreds or queries from people and this is probably a silly request :(

I’m not in the running for this competition but my OH is. It’s like trying to get blood from a stone trying to find out any info from them so found this thread useful. Anyone with experience know when OOM will be drawn up and released? Pointless asking in my house

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭brianomc

I had a look at the 2024 thread, the aptitude tests finished on 23rd August, and the results came out on 1st October. So if that's anything to go by then this year they won't be out until 2nd May

Couple of weeks?! I guess. Think it was 5-6 weeks in 2024. We’re in the dark this point on…

Best of luck to all here.

What happens next? You get an OOM.

do you have to select county preferences or at what stage is an interview? Can't recall from job booklet and first time doing the EO one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 200 ✭✭Capyberna

We selected in application. Interview will largely depend on county and OOM. Definitely not next month like a Redditor thought! 6 in Monaghan may never get an interview where as Dublin it is guaranteed etc

these threads will be gospel in the coming months and year.

There was an issue with something in the last competition that slowed everything down, I can’t remember exactly but it should only be 2-3 weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,935 ✭✭✭Cape Clear

Is the application form taken into account when calculating the OOM or is it based solely on the tests results?

Only 2 disciplines Verbal reasoning and Situational Judgement, numerical just need to meet qualifying standard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,608 ✭✭✭bennyl10

I mean, it could be 2 weeks, it could be 8 weeks, it could be tomorrow

No one knows and each campaign is different.

Your Oh knows what we all know, absolutely nothing

@mochara92 , received a response back from PAS saying that we'll need to wait for the results.

The unfortunate disadvantage of the civil service is there's no definitive timeline regarding recruitment.

It’s heart breaking to see people still trying to hold onto hope into the 2024 competition in its last few days of getting a position, or even worse, passing interview and not getting placed in time.

I really don't understand why public jobs don't implement some sort of progress tracker into people’s accounts just to inform everybody of what OOM or batch they are on every week.

I think especially this year's application cohorts (including myself) are really going to struggle with how long the waiting time is.. judging by people on Reddit being impatient after only a few days.

I don't know how they are going to stomach waiting months or over a year or two years. I could see a lot taking other jobs and pulling out tbh.

I am in the position of I have passed the CO interview internally since November and still not been placed I am No.2 on the panel, passed the interview for EO traineeship too, it is soul destroying and its unfair on all applicants.

But unfortunately thats how the system works, when a positions becomes available you get your chance. In an ideal world it would be great to know how many positions are available but thats impossible to know, retirements, promotions and mobility moves etc.. keep the fingers crossed and try to just forget about it, patience is key when dealing with PAS and the CS!
