Hi i just failed nct on worn ball.joint dust cover. And even tho my front alligment was perfect at 0.0 its says result.n/d and says repreat side slip test. Was hoping after ball.joint is replaced they could just do visual check outside and pass me without retest. Tire rod end affect aligment i think not ball.joint. car is hyundai i20. I remember failed on cv boot once and it was just free visual. Anything i can do about it? Thanks.

It is not a visual if they say slip test not done.

CV boot is not a visual retest and the alignment test needs to be done again. Nothing you can do about that.

Ball joint absolutely will affect alignment and any job where the suspension has to be disassembled they have to do the side slip test and put it in the ramp to make sure it has been reassembled correctly

Slip test was done and front reading was 0.0m/km which was perfect.

And once you fit the new ball joint it will be different

You said in your OP that the reading was 0.0m/km but it says result n/d on the sheet. This means "Not Done" and the 0.0 is just a default figure filled in and not the actual result of the test.

You'll still have to go through the retest and pay the fee after fixing the issue.

I failed on a broken spring a few years abck.

Tester said he couldnt do the suspension test due to broken spring.

Suspension was tested and had passed .

Replaced the spring and retested the following day.

Its obvious it needs to be rechecked when new parts are fitted.

I dont mind so much if its explained properly

It doesn’t mean it wasn’t done. It was done, the tolerances were within spec today but will be rechecked during retest after new ball joint fitted.

Had a car fail on both outer CV boots "insecure" last Thursday morning.

Visual check on the fail sheet. Had them done and went back later that day

and they looked at them in the car park and issued the cert.

Seriously? I've been regularly replacing CV boots for years and never got a visual for it

100%, I'll send you the fail sheet if you want. Citroen and Peugeot 2.0HDi's are always

failing for "insecure" CV boots and I've never had to pay for a retest for them. I remember you

saying a while ago that it isn't a visual and I thought you were getting screwed over by the test centre.

I won't mention the test centre in case I jinx it! :-)

An insecure CV boot is a visual but a torn boot is a payed retest because you have to disassemble the suspension to replace the boot

I was thinking that might be the case. You could get a "nice" tester that would mark it down

    as "insecure".

The car I tested last Thursday had a number plate lamp hanging down when it was brought it

and a loose check strap. I only noticed the loose lamp as it was brought in for test. When I got

the car back, the lamp was popped back in and the check strap was tightened!!!!! First time I

ever saw a tester do anything like that.

All right lads thanks for replies. I had whishbone replaced ready for re test but after it was replaced my steering wheel is a little to the right car is driving all right as before just steeeing wheel is off a bit. Why this could happend if tie rod ends were not touched while changing whishbone? Im gonna get alignment monday but im afraid would alignment sort this out as alignment in this car is just regulated via tie rod ends not control arm... thanks.

Yes it will, alignment is adjusted using the track rods but replacing a wishbone or top mount etc can also throw it out significantly
