    FFS McKiernan go home

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,722 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Ah now. He’s, what, 35 and arguably, but for him, we wouldn’t have won the game against Kildare.

And I say that as someone who has been critical of how much he slows down the play over the years.

Ah FFS . We'll be cannon fodder

There was an error displaying this embed.

We will and Division 3 is our standard but we might as well prolong exposing players to a higher level as long as we can because, when we do drop, it’s going to be for a good while.

On the way back from Derry, disappointed with the performance all round. Mc cabe showing us another example of the jobs he’s doing with our underage, a sub keeper who has never played a minute in goals and gets the nod at no.16. Should we not have developed 1/2 other keepers in the last 10+ years?

An improved performance, wasn’t impressed with Derry, expected more!

I assume the chances of players been released to their clubs next week is zero.

Our best goalkeeper of all time never played in goals before Hyland brought him in so I wouldn't be using that as a stick to beat with. If the quality is not there it is hard to develop players we can only deal with what we have.

Very sad to hear of Michael Lyster's passing, and at a relatively young age. Most of us with have grown up with him as the face of GAA sports. RIP.

    Division 2 next year

    Cavan

    Monaghan

    Dublin

    Tyrone

    Louth

    Down

    Wexford

    Derry

That could be very very messy.

Well done to our ladies who were promoted to Division 1 today ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,722 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

We’re way behind in terms of development for any quality that is or could be there. There has been too much penny pinching to save for what is going to be a white elephant in Breffni.

I posted last Summer we are even behind Fermanagh, who are another struggling county. If we aren’t even matching them, how can we expect to compete?

It’s not like we have a strategy to try and bridge the gap if we can’t by matching expenditure. As others have said, we’re just poorly copying what other counties do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29 Breffniblue71

there’s a difference between a mid 20’s Raymond Galligan to develop him and our sub keeper today who is 30+ with 0 minutes in goals as no.16. Poor management and development within the county.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,722 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Connolly is probably a similar age to when Galligan went in goals. According to this article, he was 21 in 2018 so is about 29 now.

    https://www.gaeliclife.com/extra-time/five-minutes-with-cavans-ryan-connolly/

Galligan was born in 1987 and made his debut in goals in 2015 so was 28 or so, certainly not mid 20s.

I do agree though it shows poor development when the man directly charged with developing players is importing midfielders from Galway and turning outfielders into keepers.

Again, though also, someone referenced Mickey Graham here the other day, I always said it was an absolute joke that Galligan played practically every minute of every game, even in McKenna Cup games and dead rubbers in low divisions.

Does anybody know anything regarding to inner county set up? Is Diarmuid Scullion doing most of the coaching? He’s known to be top especially after great success with Scotstown & Derry. It’s quite evident in the last 2/3 seasons is the lack of physicality from underage panels up to seniors which coincided with Andre Quinn stepping away and the CCB deciding to keep Aodhagan Fox as Lead SSC despite not being qualified. The penny pinching for the Breffni Park vanity project is going to be pointless when we’re going to be playing in front 700 people against Carlow in a few years time.

Starting 4 years later can make a huge difference in development and longevity, but yes it’s a worrying sign.
the county board needs to take action.

Anyone know the actual reasoning behind the development of Brefini ? Like can they just not throw a roof and put seating the whole stand side and be done with it?

Putting seating on the terrace is a joke tbh, probably personal preference here but will definitely take away from some of the atmosphere.

Is is to try and get concerts ? Can't really see Oasis or any big acts coming to Cavan ?

Ulster Finals ? I'd imagine there will be a move to get them in Croker especially if Casement doesn't go ahead & Clones needs a revamp.

All Ireland quater finals a possibility but again the pool of counties that suits may be big enough to Croke Park.

Ulster Rugby a couple of European Cup games and maybe the odd league game ? I'd imagine that's gone with Kingspans sponsorship of the rugby crowd?

Personally if they are doing anything reducing capacity to 15,000 or 18,000 should be the call.

When was the last time it was sold out for a Cavan game ?

The way this war in Iran is going there will be no developments taking place the price of materials will see to that.

I doubt if you can reduce capacity in a stadium without knocking the half of it and building it back up again i don't think anyone would be on for that.

Didnt travel to Derry but watched the TG4 coverage. I was not impressed and I was not as optimistic as Michael Hannon and Damien Donohoe on the commentary and Podcast. Firstly, Derry were in 1st gear in the first half, I am pretty sure of that. Even then we just did ok and went in behind. In the 2nd half Derry sped up what they were doing, attacked Cavans kickout and were by far the better team. My thoughts are

    • When Derry came at us, our defence was wide open. There were goals to be had but Derry didnt really go for them
    • Our complete over reliance on Gearoid in the 2nd half to try to win kick outs against 3 Derry players was shocking.
    • We are not scoring any simple scores, ie team scores. We kick it to a guy and expect them to score on their own. We kept in the game by scoring sensational 2 pointers
    • Some of our most important players are way off their best - Paddy Lynch, Gerry Smith and Niall Carolan (who is carrying an injury) for example.

I do not take yesterdays game as some moral victory or turning point. It was bad and maybe not quite as bad as Offaly but we were never winning that game and Derry could have done what they wanted with the scoreboard.

What way does the All-Ireland Series work anyway this year is it a open draw for Round 1?

"Eight Round One winners advance to Round 2A with the losers going to Round 2B. The four Round 2A winners will qualify for the quarter-final stage. Round 2A losers will meet Round 2B winners in Round 3 (preliminary quarter-final)."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭tazman06

Round 1 is the provincial finalists at home to the other 8 teams who qualify by League and/or Tailteann winner 2025 if they didn't reach a final. I think that is then an open draw with that in mind

@Breffniblue71 how many Cavan fans do you reckon were there? All joking aside if we had 20 I think that was it- unless there was a clatter on the terrace.

I actually went up fearing the worst. Given how a poor Offaly team cut us open, I thought Derry might give us an unmerciful trimming. Looked a bit tighter at the back, kicked some good scores and left some goals behind us. Actually played better against Derry than we did against Offaly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

I was talking to a few Derry lads at the game. They were up for it, remember they had to win to keep their chances of promotion up. They felt that game was them in a nutshell, spells of looking great and spells of lethargy. Anyways, Derry running hard are going to be a handful for anyone. We actually defended much better than we did against Offaly.

Going in against a wind only 3 points down wasnt bad considering their goal was sensational but 9 times out 10 someone pulling on a ball 20 yards out doesn't go in. And their 2 point free (brilliant strike) should have been called for a free out if there was any consistency. Granted it didn't need McCabe berating the linesman about it for the next 10 minutes :)

You're absolutely right about our over reliance on Gearoid for kick outs has to be addressed but there was some variation in that McVeety (who was absolutely outstanding again) showed for a few and won them. The likes of Conor Brady and Ryan Donhoe are going to have to step up.

Our subs are baffling these days. Oisin Brady was flying and hooked. Shehu was doing okay. Paddy Lynch was having a mare, but keeps him on. What is the point in bringing McGovern and Tobin on for a minute at the end?

Also- playing Carolan was madness yesterday. He was struggling with his knee from the get go. Anyone could see that.

Was at the game yesterday. Not too disappointed overall. That might sound odd, but based on prior and all that. Staying up was the main thing, and thanks to Louth we did that. Shouldn't have to come to that, but here we are and the 2 games we did win means we are the 6th best and that's that. With layout as it is, would take 2 D3/D4 teams reaching finals to knock us out of Sam.

On yesterday. I think we went ok. I note some comments above on how Derry were etc but I always find that you can't take one point on a team seemingly not bothered or in 1st gear and not how the opposing team impacted on that. We played well at times, the first quarter was good for example. I saw green shoots in our movement, our kickout strategy, and a few other things. Not perfect obviously as things were still clunky, but seeing enough to suggest we might not be far away from it coming together. And that may be at just the right time with Ulster in 4 weeks.

Derry were lucky enough 1st half. Their goal was an unexpected snatch shot (very well taken tbf) after a misplaced pass, and they got a 2 point free that should have been a free out just before, and then they got the 3 up infraction for 2 points but we did not get the same moments when they also broke it. The ref gave more than a few hometown decisions and felt they got their frees a bit easier than us overall. I've a few Derry friends and they said the same at half time.

The lads looked low on confidence, obviously, how could they not after last few weeks and the way the manager acts etc. But saying that, we showed some fight. We got back to within 2 just after half time, but then disappeared for 10 minutes where they got a run of scores. We took on the 2 pointers too late, and the day and conditions showed they could be taken and could have been closer if we went with more shots and took any of the 3 goal chances we had. Yeah I know, if my aunt had balls etc….

Lynch seems overburdened. Maybe not fully fit, and was very well wrapped up by Rodgers who's one of the best in the game. But saying that he had chances around the arc and wouldn't seem to pull the trigger as if he needed more room. He needs to be faster on the draw or dink and get that space to shoot. I think he's close to it coming together, and maybe harder ground and better conditions next month will help that

Seems we've a few lads to come back from injury next month according to Scullion after the match. Cian O'Reilly, Evan Crowe, Barry Donnelly due back, and Meade and maybe Cormac O'Reilly could be back who already got League game time. Likes of those will be a huge addition back in. A few lads yesterday just not fully up to it yet and wouldn't usually see Championship time just yet. With who does look to have form out there, and who can come back in, think it can click soon. Monaghan not going well and no reason our game can't lift when we come up against them in Clones. As said above, I saw enough yesterday of individual lads in decent form, an improved defensive set, and movement on kickouts and such that with return players we can be better. Hopefully it's onwards and upwards from here

There was a decent enough crowd. Obviously not expecting massive numbers, but was in the stand and a fair few around us and would imagine it was similar in other sections. Went across to the terrace to catch up with an old Derry friend at half time, and some over there too. Not huge numbers, but a smattering across both sides so not just 20

Aodhagan Fox's history seems to be aligned with some serious organisations and people. Genuine question but which part of his competency concerns you most?

That's a good review, would agree with your analysis.

On Lynch, his body language to me looks all wrong. I don't mean just yesterday- Rogers was stuck to him like glue so not an easy day out. But barring kicking some nice frees against Kildare he's not at the levels we know he can be. I know he had a very serious injury but he looks lethargic at times and his confidence is clearly not there. He missed a handy free and a 45 with the wind that 2 years ago he would have kicked with his eyes closed.

We all know he has bags of talent but it's not even close to happening for him at the moment, but we need him in form for the Monaghan game.
