hi I’m looking to buy an EV was thinking of buying a brand-new EV the Hyundai kona platinum 65 kw Car. It costs about 42K.

my alternative option that I was thinking was buying a second-handluxury EV the Audi etron 40 sports line with the 77 kW battery. I feel the sensible choice is to go for a new kona but the youth within me wants to buy the second hand Audi for around 36K?

What’s your thoughts on which would be a better buy

That's the Q4 etron you have described and its not really a luxury car at all. Premium brand, yes. Most aren't specced that well at all that you will find for sale.

Its much the same as a vw id4 or skoda enyaq. Nice car all the same but nothing special at all.

For luxury youre looking at original etron.

They’re not really comparable even in terms of the prices you mentioned. You really need to decide between buying new or used first. Personally I would never advise new especially with an EV as residual are still very shaky. This of course means there is exceptional value in used EV’s at the moment. As others have said the Q4 e-Tron isn’t particularly impressive and is very much an ID.4 with an Audi badge. Spec can be poor on them too, fabric seats etc.

yes, I see there is good value to be had for used EVs what would be your recommendations for a good EV with decent range? Thanks

Just out of curiosity are you spending €40k because fuel has increased by 40 cent?

    No

no I’ve being looking to change for months and now I have a buyer for my 2016 Skoda Octavia. They were giving me feck all as a trade in for my car. Bit more buying power now with no trade in

Hyundai ioniq 5, kia ev6 are 2 to look at closely.

Plenty used of both available with loads of warranty. Id pick them ahead of kona all day long.

Would you drive a Tesla? There's a €3.5k trade in boost at the minute bring a new Tesla down around €33k

Had a test drive in a q4 around 2021/22 and didn't like it, At the time i was driving a full spec A6 quattro and the demo in the garage must of being a basic entry model. Nothing in it between an ID 4 and the q4.

    I’d suggest you spend around €30K on a Kia EV6 or a Skoda Enyaq 80. Examples here; https://www.donedeal.ie/view/41406347 . ; https://www.donedeal.ie/view/41559392

Given you don’t have a trade in, it might worth looking at importing from N.I too.

i bought a three and a half year old kona last year (64kWh) with under 50k on the clock for half the price of one new, from a main dealer. i don't think i could justify spending double that on a new one.

is there much of a difference between the kona and Ionia 5 both long range batteries would offer a similar range.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 442 ✭✭Kealyboy

I do like the Kia ev6 too

The kona, ioniq5 and Kia Ev 6 are 3 cars that I would consider buying second hand I know kona is a bit smaller than the other too.

how do you find the kona? Would you recommend? What is the real world range like on the kona thank you

so far i've yet to see an indication that i'd get less than 400km on a charge, even in the winter. that said, i like the cabin cooler than most which obviously means i do better in the winter than most.

today i did 110km of driving, a lot at 60-80km/h and finished up with something like 12.5kWh/100km usage. which in theory would equate to about 500km; but that was in optimal conditions; i didn't have the heat on.

i’ve been watching a few reviews about them and what you’re saying about a range seems to be the consensus. Apparently, they are very efficient. The 65 kW battery range seems to be better than most 77 kW EV’s i.e. Volkswagen ID 4

Be aware the Kona is quite a small vehicle and very cramped in the rear. Your old Octavia would be a lot more spacious.

    Ms

The new Kona is so dull. That front is just terrible. I liked the old ones but the new ones just no.

Check out the Kia Niro. Its a very good car and better looking than the Kona too also great deals at the moment on Smart #1 and #3 cars.

Renault Megane E-Tech and Scenic worth looking into too.

MG also worth checking out they are making great cars now.

Another is Leapmotor. The B10 would be well in your budget. Lovely car. Still a bit risky buying one though as unknown residuels.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

yeah, we went from an octavia to a kona. we've no kids so the space in the rear seats doesn't affect us much. i do miss the boot space though.

Sure I won’t be sitting in the back. It won’t bother me 🤣

I mainly do town driving. I have a 12 week old child so space in the back should not be an issue. Don’t really want anything too big as I said I mainly just do town driving and a nice bit of driving out around the countryside as well It’s a rare enough that I’m on the motorway doing long distance. I do about 18,000 km a year.

Your budget of mid 30s to low 40s means you're spoilt for choice, new or used. I'd suggest visiting as many dealers as you can manage and arranging tests drives of pretty much whatever you can. To start you off in no particular order: Kia (EV3, Niro, EV6 might be too big would need to be used) , Hyundai (Ionic5, 6, Kona), Volkswagen(id3,id4), Skoda (Elroq, Enyaq- quite big), Cupra -similar range of EVs as VW and Skoda, Xpeng (might be too big), MG (4, 4urban+ others in the range offering more space within budget), BYD dolphin, Renault (Megane, Scenic- maybe too big and would need to be used), Ford (Puma,Explorer - again maybe too big), Polestar 2- used, New Nissan Leaf, BMW (iX1- used ) or the mechanically similar MINI Countryman- new.

I've left out Tesla even though I currently drive a Model 3 as I think the Model Y would be too big and- apart from a Lambo -pretty much any car would be easier than a Model 3 when it comes to dealing with a 12 week old and baby car seats on a daily basis. I have no experience of Stellantis EVs so can't comment on them.

Since you rarely do long motorway trips, the smaller battery and therefore cheaper versions of the above would be perfectly suitable for your needs and at 18k kms per year the fuel savings would be significant , probably around €2k assuming you can charge at home.

    Smell of FUD now.

I was looking at a few Kia ev6. Seem like a nice car. Good value on a used one. Was there a recall on 12v ICCU issue. Is that something to be wary of with these car. Even after the recall could be problematic with the car in the future?

    This one caught my eye

I have the endurance 6 one of those, really like it

They look class. Way nicer than an ID4

you’ll get a highly specd 3 year old polestar 2 with about 40 to 50k kms for around 30k. Unreal car but might not have enough room in the back for you

EV6 is a fairly big car if your mainly using it for city driving. The EV3 would be a bit more compact:

Or if you don't need massive amounts of space then maybe something like a Puma would be more suitable and a good bit cheaper too:
