    Tried the Dead Space remake last night but don’t know if I’ll stick with it. After RE the whole things feels a bit weightless - the movement is very quick and shooting doesn’t feel to have an impact. I remember really enjoying picking the enemy limbs apart in the original but it just doesn’t feel as fun here.

    I do see the MGS3 remake is down to €40, which is sort of tempting me. The original is one of my favourite games ever, but never felt it especially needed to be remade.

    I had a good time with MGS3 but at times you are brought back that it’s a PS2 game in how clunky the character moves. Heightened my stress levels during combat and the character is acting like he is doing some relaxing yoga. For nostalgia though it was fun

    MGS3 didn't need to be remade, and the remake likely won't top the original as the best version of the game for you. Saying that though, they did an excellent job with the remake. A lot of the QoL improvements are great (especially if you're already so familiar with the game). Pretty much everything from the original is intact. Looks great. There can be a disconnect between how good the game looks and how old the gameplay still feels, same with cutscenes/animations.

    My final take on it was that if anyone played the original, that will always be the definitive and best version of the game. But for new players, I'd see no reason not to tell them to play the remake instead. And if I get the urge to play through the game again which I do every few years anyway (MGS3 is my favourite game of all time), I could easily see myself just playing the remake since it is so faithful to the original.

    It was one of the last PS2 games were O was confirm and X was cancel in the west. Although why that ever came to be standard in the west still baffles me.

    Personally I still love how the original PS2 Metal Gear games look, with that distinctive hazy look. I find the Unrealification of classic games an unfortunate trend, overwriting what are often aesthetically fascinating titles. Even when the aesthetics were inevitably borne of the hardware limitations of the day - that’s what makes them interesting!

    They got rid of the colour grading which really infuriates me. It's a very obvious artistic choice by Kojima and he used it in all of his games since Metal Gear Solid (and possibly was the originator of the colour grading trend in movies). It's weird that they would remove it for a much cleaner look that doesn't feel like the original game at all.

    Started playing Cairn this week thanks to recommendations here. Frustrating game, but I can see the appeal. I think you need to be in a certain mood to play it. I reckon I'll dabble from time to time and will get up the mountain eventually.

    Once you get a couple of 'areas' up the mountain, it really comes into its own and you start getting a knack for it.

    One thing that I turned on that really made the game more enjoyable was the hold feedback - it gives a little white square if the hold is a legitimate hold. I think it makes it a bit more realistic as a climber would know when their hand/foot is actually in a hold. Falling feels far less random and the game felt much fairer. It's not an 'assist' so it doesn't change the difficult down from Alpinist (or Free Solo).

    I tried that setting and absolutely see the appeal but i spent more time looking for white boxes to appear and took me out of the immersion. Also, agree with above, once you get past the first few starting areas, you'll find it clicks on how to get up a wall safely and become a lot more confident in climbing, that's when the enjoyment really comes into play. I had like 60 falls in my first pay through, then 4 on my next.

    Any tips on when to use pitons? Or other tips in general? I've played a little bit of it but gotten frustrated a few times when the avatar seems to ignore the obvious handhold I'm aiming for and instead tries to grab a sheer cliff face.

    I'd still recommend hold feedback as it helps you know when you've actually got your foot in a hold and when its on a sheer.

    On the piton side, when you get to a certain area early enough in the game, you'll see 'The Child' statue on the right hand side - I'd recommend exploring that and climbing up into it. Similarly when you get to a rope bridge, you'll see a similar statue underneath it, which I'd recommend scaling down to and exploring. Both have items that will be extremely helpful later on as it relates to pitons. They're optional but worth it.

    Other tips are to use your consumables and cook, cook, cook. You can mix flowers and hot water to make infusions which give you boosts. If you then cook that infusion with another flower, it creates a stronger infusion. And then again up until you have an ultimate infusion which is unreal to use. Keep your empty bottles and store your mixes. 'Grit' is a great perk as it freezes your temperature, hunger and thirst.

    Definitely explore around as there are things to find that will make your climb a lot easier.

    I find a little crack or line on a wall and put Aava's hand it foot on it for a good grip. Like Iron said, put on the good grip indicator for a start. As for pitons, they are a good checkpoint when climbing a wall when you can see there's a dodgy section that you might have to scramble past and not sure if you'll make that route. They're obviously handy when you get into trouble and Aava starts shaking but no harm placing a few on each climb as rest points. Also like above, the 3 giant statues hold very important items that will help with that.

    As for cooking, collect all the flowers you can. Ml cooking one with water. Then cook another flower with the first mix. Then cook a 3rd flower with the 2nd mix will give you an ultimate infusion and get great buffs that will make almost any wall a doddle.

    Some very tricky walls on the first play through are trivial on the 2nd, it really is that climb, fall, learn, repeat and when you hit a summit, you feel all the frustration pays off. However, that might not be the case for everyone. Maybe you reach a summit and think that was an absolute ball ache, then maybe it's just not for you.

    Oh also use plenty of chalk. You can make more chalk by feeding rubbish you find you climbot, really helps your grip as well.

    Anyone having ps5 login issues? My status is offline and when i go to change it, it's greyed out with no other options (offline or appear away). Mentally signed out, back in and said something went wrong, try again later. Multiple reboots, reset router, repaired console storage, still the same 😩

    Ps network status page says all fine but 2 of my friends can't log in either.

    Looks great, tempted to pick it up in the fantasy but didnt think it would get upto 85.

    Its more expensive than I thought too at 70e.

    Got around to finishing Ninja Gaiden Ragebound. A frustrating game overall and one I was happy to finish up with. There are hints of a really good game in there, and during a handful of levels where the design lets you get into the groove for a few mins you can see the potential. But alas the boss, encounter and level design are all generally weak IMO, and the pacing is all over the place. With the exception of one or two levels near the end which mix things up, there just isn’t enough variety to keep things interesting. Also found the dual protagonist mechanic severely underutilised - the secondary one silo’ed off to occasional samey platforming sections.

    I know I’ve criticised the power up mechanic before, but by the end that was relatively low down my list of criticisms of the game. An OK game that could’ve been much better, and falls pretty far short of recent exceptional 2D combat-heavy games like Silksong or Nine Sols.

    Pity. I adored it but probably isn't for everyone. Found it absolutely nailed the flow state that made the NES Ninja Gaiden games better and quite enjoyed playing a pixel art game that wasn't about combo heavy gameplay and damage sponge enemies. I also feel it would make an exceptional speedrun game so I'm hoping to catch it at future GDQs.

    I still can't believe I got to exist in this universe at the same time as being able to stack Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 onto the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge.

    I have no idea why I never played them either but the games would most likely be dated now compared to other games. Maybe they should remaster them.
