I know nothing about it but if they built it in 2006 without planning then it must have been done for cash...over 6000 square feet😁

They were refused planning for a smaller house on same site, went ahead and built a mansion with no planning. Zero sympathy for them

good enough for them, I hope they’re done for legal and demolition costs too

It took some neck to do what they did. What made them think they'd get away with it.

This case has been going on for decades, I used to have no sympathy for them but over the last number of years the government have opened plenty of IPAS centres for foreign chancers without planning permission so why shouldn't an Irish person be able to build on their own land.

    I agree.
they threw up two fingers at the planning section of the council, Meath Co Co are notorious for planning rules so it was never going to end we’ll.

it’s surely a shame to see materials wasted when it’s so dear but it’s the right solution.

I hope now they are chased for the bill for the demolition and disposal of the waste.

If they let them away with it, it would set a dangerous precedent. Everyone would be at it.

Seems the county council are more forgiving of ministers: https://x.com/nwl88444048/status/2034615129610899720?s=46

Lovely day here, weather wise. Great to hear the blackbird up on the tree outside the house and he giving it welly, as I was coming in.

not far from here. Applied for planning, didn’t get it so stuck the two fingers up at the council and built a house twice as big and then dragged it through the courts for 20 years

didn’t vacate the house a year ago when they were told to so the is a warrant out to go before a judge for contempt

himself is a plumber. Don’t know what she does but they must have payed cash because what bank would have given out a mortgage without planning?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 31,981 ✭✭✭✭whelan2

I think the bank looking for planning is a relatively new thing? Aib asked me 3 years ago when looking for loan for milking parlour, it was one of the last things they asked for .

probably don’t want their faces all over social media, understandable too.

Aw suppose, but if your working at a job you shouldn't need to hide you face, get a different job if you can't handle it. Bad precident to be encouraging Balaclavas for any reason.

I have sympathy for them myself. Heard her kn the radio today. Tried for years to get planning and got nowhere with the council. Built out of frustration eventually. House isn't really that big. They are counting a car port and a double garage I think.

It's one rule for one and another rule for friends with the planning crowd. Once they get a set on you, that's it. I had my own issues with planning down a tiny back road in my own farm yard. A weedy English prick came out to meet me on site. I'm still glad I was able to control my temper that day with the nonsense he was spewing.

Went ahead and built the house i wanted in the end. Didn't need a mortgage or a thumbs up from that crowd to build in my own yard.

I think the land was sterilised by the planning authority prior to they buying it. Thus, they knew they couldn't get planning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,785 ✭✭✭50HX

She was on spewing some rubbish about hope the house goes to charity...talk about deflection.

No sympathy based on the bit I know of the situation.

Agree or disagree there is a reason we have planning laws...far from perfect & plenty of us have had to jump through hoops & deal with refusals.

It smacks of wealthy bully boy tactics, 2 fingers I'm building it anyway.

Its shameful in one way to tear it down considering the condition it is in

she was talking sh*te on the radio, lies and contradicting rubbish, Claire Byrne should have been much better prepared to challenge her BS. Arrogance and bully boy tactics from the start with them. The notion of the council taking a house and giving it to a homeless charity after they battling for 20 years saying that it shouldn’t be there, no doubt their next ploy was to stay in the house and then pay “rent” to the charity as they would deem themselves homeless. Usually I love it to see someone beat the system but on this occasion I’m delighted they lost.

Not far from me but know nothing about it. You would wonder how they could afford to build it without planning though. It appears to be well finished off so no money was spared doing it.

As someone who spent a few years trying to get planning in Meath I know how frustrating it can be... but the process is there for a reason & it should be followed. Once built without planning it was never going to get retention. You ll get retention for an extension or alterations but not a full new build.

The former minister one is different in that planning was granted for his house, he just ticked the box on the planning application to say he didn't own any other house. Its one of them stupid things in Meath Development plan that anyone who owns a house isn't entitled to build a house in a rural area, its part of the local needs requirement...

I think you need to do a bit more research into it. Absolutely nobody should have sympathy for them.

They bought land that they knew had a sterilisation order and couldn’t be used for development. They then applied for planning a couple of times for 3,000ish sq foot houses and were refused every time due to the sterilisation order. Thats a far cry from getting nowhere with the council, it’s the council implementing the conditions that were known before the land was bought.

They then decided f**k that and built a house twice the size with no planning thinking they could get retention.

When that was refused they spent 20 years delaying the inevitable through numerous court cases which have cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands. They’re now on numerous radio and tv interviews today and each one is a contradiction of what they’ve said in the previous one. I’d say they couldn’t lie straight in a bed and thought that because they were well off they could do what they like and bully everyone else into accepting it.

As I said at the start, there should be zero sympathy for them and hopefully there will be some method of retrieving some of the cost of it all back out of them as soon as the house is knocked.
