Not a single interesting tie. Batterings all around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,883 ✭✭✭✭8-10

Lang was down for ages. Was surprised it was only 6 mins added on after that, all the subs, 3 goals, 2 disallowed goals, and Salah also got injured which delayed a small bit

If you look at this thread I've made this point nearly every single CL game we've played this season: CL refs are not adding on enough time at the end of Liverpool games. It's not even close. I feel like it's blatantly obvious every single round and nothing is done about it

Can't comment on the disallowed goals as I haven't seen them back yet but regardless, 6mins is shocking. Sure there were 5mins added in the first half and nowhere near as much stoppage, but that at least seemed reasonable for that half. I was waiting for 9 or 10mins at 90 with the length of Lang stoppage. I will time it later on watch back

Not a lot of jeopardy though… a fair few thrashings handed out. Even the Barca Newcastle game, after a brilliant first half today it was dead within 10 minutes of the second half.

I hope the quarters give us a bit more competition in the ties.

Arsenal will never get a better chance of reaching a UCL final.

    They lost a final !

But yeah, the should make the semi without breaking sweat anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,883 ✭✭✭✭8-10

Something phased them, they couldn't get anything going all night and seemed overawed by something

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,603 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

    😄

They literally couldn't find their feet in the first half. Maybe it was too quiet for them 🤣

In fairness though only 1 of the 4 goals scored was from a set piece

They created 3.97 xG from Open Play and the other 3 goals were good open play moves, it's not like they relied on them tonight.

If anything they were poorer at set pieces missing a penalty and having a goal disallowed from a foul by van Dijk from a corner

Got to see replays of the disallowed goals. Frimpong definitely offside for the O.G. but the foul by van Dijk I can't see, maybe he saw something else in the box? But the whistle I think goes after and van Dijk's jump looks good to me

The 3rd column should because it includes only the remaining teams. The winner will 100% come from those 8 therefore the cumulative total (of each individual teams chance) should be exactly 100.
(The other columns are correctly less than 100% as there were 8 other teams involved at the time).

Yeah I don't think so but VAR would have had to check right?

In the PL it would have been given, I know there's a lot of debate in England for giving keepers more protection but this seems like overcorrection in the other direction, doesn't seem like this is the answer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,883 ✭✭✭✭8-10

Equalling 100.8% makes no sense when there's only those 8 clubs left

I wonder if the supercomputer is actually AI because that's the sort of inaccuracies you see from AI and then you point it out and it's all "great catch! I will adjust to 100%"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,679 ✭✭✭BenK

Yeah makes sense, I was more thinking of in a betting scenario but this is mathematical so I stand corrected!

Thanks to their favourable draw, Arsenal are now 5/2 favourites for the Champions League.

    image.png

The left-hand side of the draw could set up a semi-final that is a repeat of the 2020 final, whilst on the right hand side we could see a repeat of the 2006 final. That's how the bookies see it anyway.

I'll go for a PSG vs Bayern and Barca vs Arsenal semi final.

Would be a great set of games.

    Bayern vs Arsenal final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,696 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Means absolutely nothing but Arsenal were bookies favourites for the champions league before the draw or even before the playoff round was played. It's always been them with Bayern slightly behind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,539 ✭✭✭✭rob316

They are favourites because they are best placed to get to the final due to the draw but whoever comes through the other side of the draw has to be the favourite. I fully expect Arsenal to reach the final, I don't rate that Barca team highly at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭ronjo

I think @Royale with Cheese point was they were favourites before the draw was made (I cant remember exactly but it was close between Arsenal and Bayern) Draw certainly helps of course

That Barcelona team have Phenomenal attacking talent and Pedri is a brilliant midfielder. They’ll have a tough quarter final against Atleti, get through that and I think they will make the final. Over 2 legs I think a team will need to score at least 4 to knock them out, very possible the way they defend but not easy with the ball control they have through Pedri and others.

Really strange set of results in this 1/8 finals stage

Every tie contained at least one hammering, with scores like 5-0,4-0,5-2,6-1…

The later stages of the Champions league should be more competitive than this. Is it a function of the crappy ,non-competitive league phase, but these results will kill the competition. Maybe it will improve from the quarters, but there it's a pale shadow of the competition it was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,076 ✭✭✭JPup

Interesting that computer thinks Arsenal are in the difficult side of the draw. The four teams odds on that side are above 50% combined.

Doesn’t pass the sense check I’m afraid.

Real Madrid definitely too low. With only 8 teams left, their odds shouldn’t be less than 1 in 8 given their pedigree in the competition and the quality of players they have.

I think the high scores are more a result of the abolishment of the away goals rule more than anything. The away goals rule only promoted 0-0 games in the first leg.
