Has anyone ever used a valuation from VRT.ie as a basis for an appeal?

If appealing, do you need to pay the assessed VRT and then appeal or should you appeal before you pay?

And last question, would estimated mileage of 90,000 miles v actual 40,000 have a material impact (23%) on OMSP?

You have to pay first then appeal.

Never used VRT.ie. Without knowing how they arrive at their figures, I dont see how you could use that as 'evidence'. Ive just used a few comparative ads on Donedeal, Cars Ireland and Autozone and never been an issue - although caveat Ive only imported 1 car post-Brexit.

Thanks - unfortunately I won't have much to go on via the sites you mentioned - it's not exotic but is rare (a Volvo mild hybrid as opposed to plug-in or diesel).

Is there any other sources I could use for valuation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭User1998

No, there is not. What OMSP was assigned to your car? And what are similar selling for on DoneDeal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,236 ✭✭✭wassie

What car is it? A mild hybrid isnt a true hybrid in the sense that it cant run on electrical power alone. Its essentially a 48V helper system that delivers very little fuel saving. Toyota even go out of their way to avoid using "mild hybrid" and use terms likes V-Active Technology.

I dont say this to be critical, but rather try to demonstrate that there is not a lot of difference to an ICE car at the end of the day if you are stuck in doing like for like comparisons.

Thanks - yes, aware of what MHEV is. All the ICE variants from same year on sale on DD or Carzone are diesel. Not sure they are comprable, but average SP is around 2k lower than the OMSP Revenue seem to have assigned to mine (but average mileage 60,000km higher). So looks like I will struggle.

However, on ROS, they have the PHEV version (with higher trim) and if I check the OMSP on this with same month of purchase and same mileage, it gives an OMSP around 2k lower of what they are assessing my car at. That doesn't seem correct to me as I'd say they PHEV would have a higher OMSP than the MHEV.

PHEV will have a lower VRT rate which usually results in a lower OMSP than its ICE equivalent.

You were given an OMSP that's €2k higher than the diesel equivalent which isn't great. But your car has 60,000km less so it seems fair to me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,609 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Thanks - yes, I get the lower VRT rate (7% vs 30%), it's just the OMSP I struggle with - I guess they are taking the UK price and adding VRT and that explains the difference…..

I think I've just been very naive here - I had assumed, somehow, VRT would be lower and pulled the trigger. Buyers remorse as I might have gone for the PHEV instead if I had better information.

Thanks for helping me figure this out, I don't want to go down a rabbit hole thinking I'll get something back when it seems I won't.

If your not confident, then appeal for a smaller amount. You should still be able to get something back. Nothing to lose.

    Hi,

I am about to purchase a car from April 2023 car from the north to bring down. it has a northern address on the V5C from 2024 when it was purchased and taken to NI but doesnt have any MOT certs as the car doesnt have an MOt until April

is the name and address on the V5C enough to be VAT and customs duty exempt?

also its not from the person its from a main BMW dealer.

It was €1090 in the end, so:

    €1600 purchase

    €655 customs and vat

    €1090 vrt

    €3350....

I can live with it - the cars in such good condition and so rare now here that it's a case of find another one in that condition for that price !

Hi I have a question on appealing VRT

I am considering a large battery EV from NI ; 2025-Renault-Scenic-E-TECH-Long-Range-87Kwh-Techno, the car ticks two important boxes odo miles are over 5000 and the car is clearly over six months old

Techo is the basic trim number 1

"The 2024/2025 Renault Scenic E-Tech electric SUV is available in three primary, well-equipped trim levels:

    1Techno, 2.. Esprit Alpine, and 3 Iconic"

On the VRT website there is only one trim level on the drop down list

    .2 ESPIRIT ALPINE ETECH EV

VRT is payable at 1070 euro, which I think is becasue there is only mid trim an an option on the VRT website

and as such the OMSP is too high ?

    • Current OMSP determined by Revenue
    • €45739

So in theory, I could appeal the VRT ?

All models of the same car , same year are on done deal, with a lower selling price

Is the SAD or TSS , the same thing or different and is one better than the other in VRT peoples opinhon . One NI dealrer mentioned he can provide a SAD, but that would be chargeable to me at 350 stg

As per posting on separate but related discussion, I don't think SAD and TSS are the same.. But from what I understand (and trying to get validation here), SAD is what is needed to remove the VAT and Duties liability…

"Because your car was imported from GB into NI, the dealer will have TSS paperwork showing the customs declarations. This is useful, but Revenue will still want to see proof of UK import VAT/customs paid, which you said the dealer can provide.

    Together:

    • TSS documents = proof of movement and declarations
    • SAD/C88/E2 = proof of tax paid

This combination is what allows Revenue to treat the car as NI free‑circulation, meaning no Irish VAT and no customs duty."

I happen to be looking at the same model but your posting confused me.. when I use the VRT Calculator (entering First year of Registration 2024, Month January.. Not sure about this and then 5001 as mileage)… I get ZERO VRT liability. See below.. Where did you get 1070 Euro from? I just want to make sure I get this right too!

    Your VRT Estimate

    1. Date
    2. 18/03/2026
    3. Time
    4. 19:44
    5. Rate of VRT
    6. 7%
    7. Vehicle Registration Tax
    8. €0

    Vehicle Details

    1. Statistical Code
    2. 50042989
    3. Model
    4. SCENIC
    5. Make
    6. RENAULT
    7. Version
    8. ESPIRIT ALPINE ETECH EV

    Breakdown of VRT Estimate

    1. Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) determined by Revenue
    2. €48659

Hi there 2025 model attracts 1070 CRT, 2024 0 Vrt, bear in mid the OMSP might be over represented , because there is only one type or trim level available as an option on vrt website, the trim level available there is mid, an not the entry level trim

Because you put in January 2024 the depreciation would be more and hence the car would be worth less. Therefore the car would be less than €5k vrt and the exemption brings it to zero. The other person put in 2025 so the car is worth more according to revenue. The 7% vrt minus the exemption still has €1070 of vrt due.

Have you had to insure it in NI to do this, is it garaged at a family house or a dealer? I have family in NI so easy for me to put a car there if needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44 wiresandmore

So what if it is a private sale from NI? Do they still have to have this paperwork?

Also is the 3-month rule for NI ownership written down by revenue somewhere?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭User1998

NI private sale with NI ownership for 3+ months requires no customs paperwork

Hi folks. Looking to import a pre-brexit electric car from the UK to Ireland and am interested to hear what would be the likely VRT & duties I could expect to pay and if there are any other pitfalls? The vehicle value is circa £12000 and would be purchased from a dealer.

I've gone through the motions on the revenue website but would really appreciate anyone's feedback based on their actual experience. Thanks.

What is a pre Brexit car? You'll pay 10% customs 23% VAT and whatever the VRT is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 Ronan999999

Pre-brexit being Jan 2020 or older, say a 2019 vehicle.

Hi I have submitted this to revenue/vrt, but if anyone here knows the answer, that would be better

    Hi Vrt section

I have noticed on the VRT website when I try to calculate VRT , there is one trim level for

    this electric car

    RENAULT SCENIC ETECH

Trim level 2 : ESPIRIT ALPINE

However in reality there are three different trim levels available for this car

    1 Techno
    2 Esprit Alpine
    3 Iconic Esprit Alpine

If I import a car from Norther Ireland for example
will the OMSP and in turn the VRT be calculated on the trim level 2 Esprit Alpine that is on the VRT website

It will get sent to Revenue for a valuation and statistical code. Generally they will check DoneDeal to get the current OMSP and calculate the VRT based off that.
