He's currently at #72 on the Spotify Ireland podcast charts.

It looks like he hired Tom to do the official site:

How many podcasts are there in Ireland? Some days you would think everyone and his Ma has a podcast, but, 72 spot with 20 subscribers, would suggest there are only about 76?

Raymond jumped from Episode 06 to 09 yesterday. I thought it was a button issue, as Jenny said she keeps thinking it was Monday.

However, they subsequently dropped another podcast episode 08. This is part of a different podcast series 'Being Human'. It is messy having them mixed in and out of order.

Is Ray doing work experience on the one o'clock news operating the switch board?

Ha ha.... The technical gremlins are following Ray around.…maybe he had more than his customary one glass of wine 🍷 on Paddy's day 🥴

Jenny had to pick up the pieces

Yesterday, Raymond ran around UCD 'the wrong way' and saw two people 'in a relationship' staring into each others eyes. Jenny was shocked at this revelation.

how do podcasts like this make money? I get advertising and sponsorship but what’s the mechanism on the advertising is it direct or through the provider based on hits or some such? I find it hard to believe they make enough money to make it worthwhile as an actual job unless you are a big star with big reach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,011 ✭✭✭Dublin Calling

They make money by selling other products and merchandise. The podcasts I listen to are specialised, hosted by people talking about subjects they love. The are doing well then they earn enough to support creating the podcast. eg. When they want to interview a guest, they can order a qualty microphone on Amazon, shipped to the guest's house. Or pay for trips to visit interesting sites etc. They are not a replacement for the 9 to 5 job.

Unless Raymond can get a wealthy sponsor, that 50k job on RTE Gold is good money for a Voiced Tracked daily show, what takes one day a week to produce.

Well considering the money he was on for years if he’s NOT sitting on a huge pension pot, a very healthy bank balance AND mortgage free then he’s some fuppin’ eejit. He should be in a position where he’s very comfortable for the rest of his life.

He’s 61, he’d be retiring in a few years if he was in a “regular” job, and he wouldn’t have earned a fraction of his Today FM and RTÉ salaries.

You can only imagine the kind of people who are obsessed with other people's income. It's all they have to talk about. It's all they understand. I wonder if they count their own pennies as carefully as they count Ray's lol

If that comment was aimed at me I’m not sure you know what “obsessed” means.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Yeah, I would imagine he is comfortably well off and doesn't need to work anymore. Why else would he turn down the 50k/yr RTE Gold deal?

This daily podcast thing is a vanity project that is probably losing him money, but is helping to sate his flagging ego. He can always boast that RTE wasn't actually the end of his broadcasting career (true on a technicality at least).

He'll quietly give it up after what he deems to be a respectable length of time (or more likely Jenny pulls the plug on it). I would give it 3 months or maybe 6 at the max. Even once popular podcasts like 'Tommy & Hector' got a bit stale after a while and the boys stepped away to pursue other projects (a nice euphemism for quit).

    then he’s some fuppin’ eejit.

Clearly you are unfamiliar with Ray.

    Just caught up with Thursday.

Reminiscing about The Den, a little tribute to Sean Hughes and a pre-recorded interview with Richie Sadlier. No interruptions from Jenny so it felt more like a proper radio show.

It's a pity he doesn't play maybe one bit of music but I presume he can't for copyright reasons. Maybe if he got new artists before Spotify etc take control of them might work?

I think the biggest problem with both Ray and The Toyman’s pods are they’re just doing what they did on radio…..and that’s not going to work long term. Yes they’re both audio (in the main) but a podcast is different to radio, and while the audience may not demand more, they certainly want something different to standard radio fare.

The one thing both Ray and The Toyman do deliver on in spades however is unintentional comedy. If you can listen (or watch in Ryan’s case) through a comedic ear and eye they’re hilarious.

is Ray still doing that piece where someone shares a song they like and he highlights it? It’s a bit of a flop segment if he can’t play music.

    Someone should suggest this one:

    anyone enduring this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,914 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

I'm finding it ok until the Jenny bit. It's just annoying having to go to a podcast. I'm only up to last Tuesday at the moment.

It's a bit like those of us who enjoy(read endure) Liveline. It's the opportunities for Gold and sometimes the hilarious inabilities of the host or the caller. It's really not something to be proud of.

I like the Jenny segment. If it was just him for 45 minutes that'd be a bit much.

I listened to one yesterday where he talked about running around UCD and seeing an older man and a younger woman who he believed to be having an affair. He discussed running anti clockwise instead of his usual clockwise.

Jenny came on and took the p*ss out of him. I thought it was funny and if she didn't do that it would have been a bit grim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,914 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

Yeah, I caught up with that one yesterday as well but thought the opposite. Maybe if she just toned down the shouty bit she would be ok. I had never heard her voice until the podcast started so I don't know what she was like on the radio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,535 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

I don't really get the shouty bit. To me she just sounds like an Irish woman. :D

Is this week 3 now ?

My guess is Jenny will start to get more shouty and harangued as this desperate vanity project lumbers on.

Which will end first, this shíte podcast or Ray's marriage? .. Jenny has probably already a blockade in place on the straits of HerMuffin Hormuz ✋

In the last week or so it appears Ray records the show himself. Jenny then arrives and listens to his work, they then record the last part together.

Darcy was on Ian Dempsey's podcast yesterday saying that RTE treated him "like shite", I'm not sure why Darcy thinks he should have been some sort of sacrad cow in RTE? An New outsider boss coming in and putting their own stamp on the schedule is nothing new, exactly 20 years ago, Ana leddy arrived there from BBC NI and axed Val Joyce who had been there for 50 years, Val worked out his 3 months notice in Summer 06, didn't storm off in a huff like Darcy. Val was a gentleman. https://evoke.ie/2026/03/31/entertainment/ray-darcy-rte-2

Darcy sounds like a pathetic old crank....

RTE owes you nothing....you had an opportunity for a cushy number at RTE Gold and you turned your nose up at it...

    Pìss off you grumpy prìck...

IMO she really didn't. I think she was slightly pushed in the direction she went. My theory is that Callan didn't want the 9am slot, he wanted a pay increase. She said that to increase the pay he'd have to have a 2 hour show, and he insisted on 11 to 1.

Now you could argue that she didn't need to bring in Inside sport, and my other theory on this is that she hadn't heard of Game On, until she announced the new schedule.

Anyway its not a massive change to the schedule.

But yes these contractors really have no say in whether they get a contract renewed or not, and this is something they've always known about and bemoaned.

Also She was head of Newstalk and seemed to never touch Lunchtime or Monicrieff two shows that struggle.
