When we bet Dublin in the 2021 semi final, one of the older players you are referring to actually said in an interview that they felt the younger lads were celebrating too much after the semi final but felt it wasn't their place to say anything to them and they had to learn that for themselves.

So the points you make are good points, but the players you're talking about aren't doing that!!

I think this is a bit of an overreaction to what was an expected reality check at the weekend.

Not saying that people didn't have concerns about a young manager managing former teammates, but we didn't hear too much about them concerns until Kerry. Maybe the introduction of CO'C really brought it to light.

Personally, I don't think it's automatically a bad thing when a manager comes in early. There are a lot of examples of managers doing it successfully in other codes. We won't know if it's a positive or negative for some time, but I would give Andy that opportunity to see if it works out.

Maybe Hennelly, CO'C etc aren't good enough if you're thinking about an All Ireland, but should we realistically be thinking about an All Ireland. For me, Connacht is the goal and it will be difficult, those players might be able to play a role in achieving that.

I do get the point that it's very important to be focusing on the future, but with the likes of Kobe, Beirne, McHale all being very young, I don't think having CO'C around is a bad thing.

I do have concerns that DO'C is showing signs of a hard road, never mind CO'C, but I do think any judgement calls can only really be made on Andy's decisions after Connacht.

He has us in as good of a position as I would have expected at this stage.

I agree it will be after connaught that a final opinion can be given but it really isn't a great sign that we are relying on players that would be well retired in other counties.

At this stage Id sooner focus on player development than trying to win connaught. You can have one or at most 2 older players for sub roles but any more is just denying game time to others and isnt looking forward.

I don't fully agree. We should always have an eye to the future, but you play your best team on every championship day. If they're older players, that doesn't matter, they're still the best players.

True, but there has to be a balance as well. He had two u20s start in the forwards last weekend, I know people are keen (pun intended) to see more of McHale but 3 would have been too many imo.

From the league, O'Shea looks like he's edging closer to being an impact rather than starter (I suspect he'll start in Connaught), CO'C almost certainly an impact sub at best, Coen looks similar...the only one who looks a certain starter is Hennelly and I think myself that he's the best keeper we have so I would go with him.

Duffy is a strange choice for #4. Had forgotten about Kuba, hope he gets some gametime

Reaction to a heavy defeat in Tralee plus Berine,Kobe probably needed a rest after playing Wednesday with the U20s.

No tickets available online for some reason. No way it's sold out so I presume some sort of TM problem

going well so far. Hope we don’t cough up this lead, would rather we stamp on the throats and run up a bigger score but that’s just me being mean.

Home nice an early after that, most of them were across the border by the final whistle.

It'll be a different story in a few weeks time but they need to seriously turn it around.

Aido at FF but I got the wrong brother.

I think we'll see a combo of Aido and CO'C there for Connaught now. Target doesn't necessarily mean pumping long balls into them all the time. They'll cause opposition headaches even with slower build ups.

How close to a championship team was that Roscommon team?

I know Mayo made a lot of changes and I was surprised that they won, nevermind won by so much.

I can't believe that Roscommon didn't want to get to a league final, if they won they had a chance to make it and a win in Castlebar would have been no bad harm.

Anyway decent league from Mayo, lost to two real contenders but it's only year one, the win today gives them good energy going into Connacht which will be their immediate focus.

Roscommon made 9 changes I believe, 1 more than Mayo but played as if there was no way they'd entertain a win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Westernview

Completely one sided after 2 early goals for Mayo. McHale again impressive i thought. He has a directness and calmness that stands out. Lovely to see a left footed Mayo forward comfortable shooting for the posts.

Howard looks like he has potential at midfield when he fills out. Big lad and good under high ball. Tommy looked lively when he came on and looked determined to get his place back with his couple of scores.

Roscommon completely disrespected the fixture. You'd swear they were regular league final performers. And all in the cause of not showing Mayo their hand, whatever difference that will make.

I see over in the blog some supporters are talking of connacht final with Galway, dangerous talk. Over the years Mayo have underestimated Roscommon and it has cost us. Roscommon had a very good League, beaten by Kerry by one point in Kerry and defeated Donegal two weeks ago, beat Galway in Salthill after been thirteen points down. Roscommon rested nine players last Sunday. In Daire Cregg,Enda Smith and Diarmuid Murtagh they have three great forwards. Jason Sherlock is now a coach /selector having been a coach with Jim Gavin for a number of years. If we are complacent with Roscommon we will play a high price.

Someone mentioned on the blog last week whatever would become available to the public would be on the 1st April… but normally few and far between of those with the small capacity available in Ruislip.

Anyone thats interested in a bit of Micheal O'Muircheartaigh classic commentary in AI finals will like this new archive. The first half of the 89 final is on it and I think its particularly nostalgic. Micheal is clearly enjoying the open football. Nice to play in the car or have in the background around the house.
