Hearing test

Not sure, but I think I might have an issue with my hearing.

I would like to go for a test but the local offering would be specsavers. I don't want to go there because I always get the impression that, if an eagle went in there, they would sell it glasses.

I obviously really don't want to succumb to hearing aids, so was wondering if anyone has a suggestion on how to go about getting an impartial test?

do a search for an audiologist in your area as a starting point.

My missus did a free hearing test in Specsavers, didn't get any hard sell from them and didn't buy anything. If they do, you can always listen intently to whatever they offer and then say "let me think about it"

It depends on the Specsavers you go to. Some are very sales driven and the staff are on commission.

An audiology test is what it is…. should not vary much between various providers. Get Specsavers test for free. Consider their advice then shop around. Ask them for a print out of your test. Find out if it is a qualified audiologist who is doing the test. I know with eye test, some checks are done by less qualified staff who supply results to optician for final assessment.

Thanks for all of the responses - I will look up an audiologist locally.
(was not aware of the term until now)

I still don't trust my local spec savers as I think they will tell you that you have issues even if you don't - just my opinion

All specsavers will do is suggest use of a hearing aid.

You will be the judge as to whether a hearing aid works for you.

You can have a set on trial and return. I did this with a fancier type and returned for cheaper bogstandard design with no frills.

You may be given time to adjust to one and have it 'tuned' up to prescription level over a couple of visits. They advise use of HA for at least 5 hrs a day for brain to get used to new sensation.
